Pretoria is a city in the northern part of Gauteng Province, South Africa. It is one of the country's three capital cities, serving as the seat of the executive branch of government. (Cape Town is the legislative capital and Bloemfontein the judicial capital). Pretoria is the central part of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality which was formed by the amalgamation of several former local authorities including Centurion and Soshanguve). There have been proposals to change the name of Pretoria itself to Tshwane, and the proposed name change has caused some controversy.
Pretoria is named after the Voortrekker leader Andries Pretorius, and within South Africa is popularly known as the Jacaranda City due to the thousands of Jacaranda trees planted in its streets, parks and gardens.
Pretoria was founded in 1855 by Marthinus Pretorius, a leader of the Voortrekkers, who named it after his father Andries Pretorius and chose a spot on the banks of the "Apies rivier" (Afrikaans for "Monkeys river") to be the new capital of the South African Republic (ZAR). The elder Pretorius had become a national hero of the Voortrekkers after his victory over the Dingane and the Zulus in the Battle of Blood River. The elder Pretorius also negotiated the Sand River Convention (1852), in which Britain acknowledged the independence of the Transvaal. It became the capital of the South African Republic (ZAR) on 1 May 1860.
South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost sovereign state in Africa. It is bounded on the south by 2,798 kilometers of coastline of southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, on the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and on the east by Mozambique and Swaziland, and surrounding the kingdom of Lesotho. South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation. It is the southernmost country on the mainland of the Old World or the Eastern Hemisphere.
South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution's recognition of 11 official languages, which is among the highest number of any country in the world. Two of these languages are of European origin: Afrikaans developed from Dutch and serves as the first language of most white and coloured South Africans; English reflects the legacy of British colonialism, and is commonly used in public and commercial life, though it is fourth-ranked as a spoken first language.
South is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. It is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. South is the polar opposite of north and is perpendicular to east and west.
The word south comes from Old English sΕ«ΓΎ, from earlier Proto-Germanic *sunΓΎaz ("south"), possibly related to the same Proto-Indo-European root that the word sun derived from.
By convention, the bottom side of a map is south, although reversed maps exist that defy this convention. To go south using a compass for navigation, set a bearing or azimuth of 180Β°. Alternatively, in the Northern Hemisphere outside the tropics, the Sun will be roughly in the south at midday.
True south is the direction towards the southern end of the axis about which the earth rotates, called the South Pole. The South Pole is located in Antarctica. Magnetic south is the direction towards the south magnetic pole, some distance away from the south geographic pole.
Roald Amundsen, from Norway, was the first to reach the South Pole, on 14 December 1911, after Ernest Shackleton from the UK was forced to turn back some distance short.

A little girl swings alone in an old, deserted playground. As she swings, she recalls glimpses of an abandoned, decaying Pretoria -flashes of a dysfunctional city, cold and disconnected. She stops swinging and bends down to pick up a handful of crumbled cement, chipped from the edge of the slab the swing is attached to. She rises, closes her eyes and blows the cement dust into the air. In doing so, she instigates a magical process of change and rejuvenation in the city. Viele Menschen wohnen in vom Staat gebauten kleinen HΓ€usern. Diese machen alle einen gepflegten Eindruck. Es gibt aber auch teils erbΓ€rmlicher BlechverschlΓ€ge, in denen ganze GroΓfamilien hausen. I have several HD Stockshots from these lions. Watch selection of our clips at: www.global-dvc.org/pond5.asp For BBC documentaries and many Hollywood productions these lions were used as an actor or stand in. Certain moves and Close ups seen in many Serengeti/ Masai- Mara documentaries. Reasonable tame lions so quite save for us to enter the cage and did some close/ups also. Fantastic experience of a life time. First time in 2005. I could use the new Sony FX1 in HDV mode. 1440x1080i. Soon we go back for another production at this great Hotel near Pretoria. Fortunately I had a small pocket tripod with me. Ideal for low angle shots. Quick set up and pull back.
