La Ronde's Pitoune, the classic log ride whose splash-filled turns and photo finish captured the hearts of Montrealers, is no longer.
"After 50 seasons, the Pitoune ride has reached the end of its useful life and will not re-open for our 2017 season," Six Flags, the owner of La Ronde, said in a statement.
Inaugurated during Expo 67, the Pitoune was an early favourite among La Ronde-goers.
It featured sharp turns, a conveyor belt and a water-soaked finish, but the gradual decline throughout most of the journey down made it palatable for fun seekers of all ages.

In recent years, however, it was overshadowed at the amusement park by a new fleet of roller coasters and family friendly activities.
"We greatly appreciate the history and tradition of this classic La Ronde ride and thank you for your patience while we evaluate alternatives for a replacement ride in the future," the company said.
For many, the ride served as an introduction to the world of amusement park thrills.

One reader, Alessandro Di Pietro, wrote in to say she fondly remembers "getting drenched" while watching the logs splash from the sidelines.
Another, Theresa Bianco, said it was her favourite ride as a child.
"I would only go on the Pitoune and the ferris wheel because I was afraid of all the other rides," she wrote on CBC Montreal's Facebook page.

Some La Ronde fans questioned the decision, suggesting the Pitoune should be preserved for at least one more summer, to mark Montreal's 375th anniversary.
"I was there yesterday and it made me very sad to see it empty lifeless," said Cecilia Giampaolo.
