Classic hits is a radio format which generally includes rock and pop music from 1964 to 1988 or 1989, with occasional songs as recent as the early 1990s or before 1995. The term is erroneously used as a synonym for the adult hits format (which uses a slightly newer music library stretching from the 1970s through the 90s), but is more accurately characterized as a contemporary style of the oldies format, although most classic hits stations focus on pop hits from the late 1960s through the 90s.
The term "classic hits" is believed to have its birth at WZLX Boston when the station converted from "adult contemporary" to a format composed of the hipper tracks from the oldies format and album tracks from popular classic rock albums. The goal was to attract and magnetize two groups of baby boomers: those who didn't want the doo-wop and pop they found on the oldies stations, and those who didn't like the more heavy metal side of AOR stations.
Over time, the "classic hits" format has evolved into more of a station's slug line than of a tightly focused music library shared by the stations who use the term. The first branching-off in the late 1980s led to stations becoming more "classic rock"-based, and the second reincarnation manifested itself in the premises of the "Jack FM" and the "Arrow" formats. Some of the 21st-century versions are based on a music library mostly consisting of classic rock-style hits from the 1970s, along with R&B and pop hits from the late 1960s through the mid-1980s. In many of the cases, the stations are merely oldies stations that evolved into a more up-tempo sound with more newer songs, and the term is now considered a more appealing name than "oldies" to listeners and advertisers alike.

Hits may refer to:
A classic is an outstanding example of a particular style, something of lasting worth or with a timeless quality. The word can be an adjective (a classic car) or a noun (a classic of English literature). It denotes a particular quality in art, architecture, literature, design, technology, or other cultural artifacts. In commerce, products are named 'classic' to denote a long-standing popular version or model, to distinguish it from a newer variety. Classic is used to describe many major, long-standing sporting events. Colloquially, an everyday occurrence (e.g. a joke or mishap) may be described in some dialects of English as 'an absolute classic'.
"Classic" should not be confused with classical, which refers specifically to certain cultural styles, especially in music and architecture: styles generally taking inspiration from the Classical tradition, hence classicism.
The classics are the literature of ancient Greece and Rome, known as classical antiquity, and once the principal subject studied in the humanities. Classics (without the definite article) can refer to the study of philosophy, literature, history and the arts of the ancient world, as in "reading classics at Cambridge". From that usage came the more general concept of 'classic'.

Thanks to Niall Boylan (4fm) for chairing the debate. I believe that the people will understand Tony Rochford and agree that things have to stop, the system is a failure. Human life should be essential before corporate profits. Did you see Minister Howlin greeting concerned citizens, who trying to inquire about the serious matter of the Anglo Tapes? Not good enough. Were is Phil Hogan these days? Can you suggest time frame edits for specif clips anyone? This is a real sacrifice that Tony is making. He says though, 'its bigger than him'. With that in mind id ask you to go down and talk to Tony, support him, support Irish sovereignty. And ask questions of ministers on camera: "Do we legally have to pay 'this' ?" "Can we see all accounts, contracts, licences, for all corporations fina...
This might just count as my favourite radio discussion to date, because for the first time a radio presenter robustly challenged a radical feminist. The man is Niall Boylan, the host of an evening show on Classic Hits 4FM http://classichits.ie broadcast out of Dublin. The radical feminist was Roz Hardie, who I clashed with on London Live TV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2u9_tmoX0NM some months ago, and who won a 'Lying Feminist of the Month' award http://www.avoiceformen.com/feminism/j4mb-publicly-challenges-roz-hardie-chief-executive-officer-of-object-a-feminist-campaigning-organisation/ for claiming in the course of one of our three discussions that the vast majority of victims of domestic violence are women. She has yet to retract the lie, it hardly needs to be said. I think it’s f...
Niall Boylan of Classic Hits 4FM does The Ice Bucket Challenge. Niall nominated TD Leo Varadkar, RTE'S Miriam O'Callaghan and Cork's Neil Prendeville.
Niall Boylan got a bit of a surprise in the office when he was attempting to impersonate Martin Fry with ABC's 'The Look of Love'
I can see it
It's funny man
Cause it's like it's not going nowhere
And you gon' see it wherever there's struggle
[Once in a while I do look at you]
I see my pain in your eyes man
[To see that twinkle in your eyes]
So I know you're feelin' me
It's that twinkle man
That sign of struggle
I've seen it
In me
Cause everyday I can't help but see it
People ain't satisfied
And you're hatin' your 9 to 5
and Everybody wanna live another life
But ain't no length you go or mountain you climb
Not to better your days
All That would do is leave room for people to say
"I guess you're livin' better now
Share a little bit of that cheddar now"
Cause I remember days back when
A brother was hustlin' and robbin' too
I done tossed the baretta now
On a whole nother level now
Still I can't enjoy my fame
Unless my people doin' the same
And gettin' money too
[Once in awhile I couldn't look at you]
Oh once in awhile
[and see the twinkle in your eyes]
And I can see that you don't ever wanna struggle no more
[Once in awhile I couldn't look at you]
Once in awhile
[and see the twinkle in your eyes]
And I can see that you don't ever wanna cry no more
Cause every time you ask me, I'm grindin'
It shouldn't have to be that way
You shouldn't have to pay my way
I shouldn't have to want for a brighter day
Got a little little problem on the way
Bounty hunters checkin' state to state
Child support lady on your case
Not to mention tickets you ain't never paid
Oh what must I do
that's what you'll be askin'
God please hold it down for me
Don't let Satan get the hold of me
I'm tryin' to tell you it can happen to me too
But it happened a lot worse to my brother
Muhammad thank God he recovered
[Once in awhile I choose look at you]
Once in awhile
[and see the twinkle in your eyes]
And I can see that you never wanna struggle no more
[Once in awhile I choose look at you]
Look in your eyes
[and see the twinkle in your eyes]
And I can see that you don't ever wanna cry no more
[Once in awhile I choose look at you]
'Cause I see your pain now
'Cause I see your pain now
I can feel you strain now
And I can see you cryin'
And inside you're dyin'
We're no longer the same now
But you got to make change now
[Once in awhile I do look at you]
Once in awhile
[and see the twinkle in your eyes]
And I can see that you don't ever struggle no more
[Once in awhile I do look at you]
Once in awhile
[and see the twinkle in your eyes]
And I can see that you don't ever wanna cry no more
Don't wanna cry no more
And I can see
That you don't ever want to struggle no more
