Vladimir Putin has been ruling Russia since 1999. In that time he has shaped the country into an authoritarian and militaristic society. The Soviet Union dissolved into 15 new countries, including the new Russian Federation. In Putin’s eyes, Russia had just lost 2 million square miles of territory. Vladimir Putin was born on October 7, 1952 in Leningrad. “I come from an ordinary family, and this is how I lived for a long time, nearly my whole life. I lived as an average, normal person and I have always maintained that connection,” Mr Putin recalls.
ladimir Putin’s mother, Maria Shelomova, was a very kind, benevolent person.
“We lived simply - cabbage soup, cutlets, pancakes, but on Sundays and holidays my Mom would bake very delicious stuffed buns [pirozhki] with cabbage, meat and rice, and curd tarts [vatrushki],” Mr Putin says.
His mother did not approve of his decision to do judo. “Every time I went to a practice session, she would grumble, ‘He’s off to his fights again.’” Things changed after Vladimir Putin’s coach visited his home and told his parents about what he did and what he achieved; the family’s attitude toward this sport changed.
His father, Vladimir Putin, participated in the war. In the 1950s, he worked as a security guard and later as a foreman at the carriage works.
“My father was born in St Petersburg in 1911. When World War I began, life in St Petersburg became hard, people were starving, so the entire family moved to Pominovo, a village in the Tver Region my grandmother came from. Incidentally, my relatives still vacation in the house where my grandparents lived. It was in Pominovo that my father met my mother, and they got married at the age of 17.”
After the war, the Putin family moved into a room in a communal apartment [kommunalka], in a typical St Petersburg dwelling house on Baskov Lane. Vladimir Putin recalls, “It was a building with a well-like yard. Fifth floor. No elevator. Before the war [World War II], my parents occupied half of the house in Peterhof and were very proud of the living standards they had achieved then. It wasn’t really much, but it seemed like an ultimate dream to them.”
School years
A troublemaker, not a Pioneer
Even before he finished school, Vladimir Putin wanted to work in intelligence. He went to a public reception office of the KGB Directorate to find out how to become an intelligence officer. There, he was told that first, he would have to either serve in the army or complete college, preferably with a degree in law.
“And from that moment, I began preparing myself to enter the law department at Leningrad State University,” Mr Putin notes.
In 1970, Vladimir Putin was admitted to law department at Leningrad State University. “We had a class of 100 people, and only 10 of them entered immediately after high school, the rest had already completed military service. So for us, the high-school graduates, only one out of 40 was admitted. I got four out of five for the essay, but top marks for everything else, so I passed.”
“When I began studying at the university, new goals and new values emerged. I mainly focused on studies, and began seeing sports as secondary. But, of course, I trained on a regular basis and participated in nation-wide competitions, almost out of habit.”
After graduating from Leningrad State University, Putin was assigned to work in the state security agencies. “My perception of the KGB was based on the idealistic stories I heard about intelligence.”
He was first appointed to the Directorate secretariat, then the counterintelligence division, where he worked for about five months. Half a year later, he was sent to operations personnel retraining courses.
Mr Putin spent another six months working in the counterintelligence division.
That was when he drew attention from foreign intelligence officers. “Fairly quickly, I left for special training in Moscow, where I spent a year. Then I returned again to Leningrad, worked there in the First Main Directorate – the intelligence service. That directorate had branches in major cities of the Soviet Union, including Leningrad. I worked there for about four and a half years.”
Then Mr Putin returned again to Moscow to study at the Andropov Red Banner Institute, where he was trained for his trip to Germany.
In 1960-1968, Vladimir Putin attended Primary School No. 193 in Leningrad. After the eighth grade, he entered High School No. 281, a chemistry-focused magnet school under the aegis of a technology institute, completing his studies there in 1970.

The idea of a grand bargain between the United States and Russia is less popular in Washington than ever before. And yet one of the biggest foreign policy problems for the United States — North Korea — cannot be resolved without Russia's participation. In recent years, Russian President Vladimir Putin has made sure to rebuild a close relationship with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, and it's no longer enough to talk to China to mitigate the Stalinist state's aggressiveness.
Last Sunday, North Korea tested a ballistic missile that might be capable of reaching the U.S. military base on Guam. It fell in the Sea of Japan — according to U.S. reports, just 60 miles south of the Russian port of Vladivostok. The White House said in a statement, "With the missile impacting so close to Russian soil — in fact, closer to Russia than to Japan — the President cannot imagine that Russia is pleased."

The video below contains an answer from Vladimir Putin to a question from veteran BBC “journalist” John Simpson.. In less than six minutes the President of the Russian Federation explains their point of view on the post cold war era in a most devastating manner.
It is a calm and skillful demolition of the Western narrative regarding Russia in all it’s infantile and morally bankrupt depravity. Even those who disagree have the opportunity at least to hear the Russian viewpoint expressed in a succinct yet powerful way.
The core of it is that when the USSR was dismantled the West continued with the tactics of the Cold war and continued to treat Russia as an adversary despite the end of the defining ideological difference.
From their point of view the acquiescence of Russia to the Wests demands in terms of economic policy were met with encirclement, missile shields aimed at achieving Nuclear first strike capability and colour revolutions on their borders to replace their allies with the stooges of the West.
The Russian narrative has two central virtues, it is simple and it is largely true although some less “helpful” facts tend to be edited from the narrative as you would expect.

Nashi is an increasingly popular political youth organization with direct ties to The Kremlin. Officially, its goal is to support the current political system by creating a future elite among the brightest and most loyal Russian teenagers. But their agenda is also to keep the political opposition from spreading their views among the Russians.
We meet 19-year-old Marsha, a Nashi commissar and spokesperson. Marsha is a middle class girl and her family lives, like any other average Russian, in a small flat in the province. Marsha, a young and ambitious girl, seduced by the energy of the movement, the future prospects and opportunities that this organization would be able to provide, joined the Nashi at the age of 15. In almost no time she progressed to the very top of the organization, becoming the protégé of Russia's Minister of Youth. She has posed with her much admired political leader and icon, Vladimir Putin – and on one occasion, even kissed him when he attended a Nashi meeting.
Marsha belongs to the educated, well-mannered and well-spoken part of Nashi. But according to the opposition, Nashi also has a radical wing that is secretly responsible for threats and violent attacks against anyone who doesn’t agree with Putin.
When Marsha is up for election within Nashi and loses to a candidate whose program is called “fighting the enemies of Russia”, she starts questioning her role in the Nashi movement for the first time. She meets people with other political views including the journalist Oleg Khasin with whom she debates on television. And then the unexpected happens. Although they passionately disagree, Marsha and Oleg become close friends.
Marsha’s new acquaintances soon get her in trouble with Nashi and when “unknown perpetrators” attack Oleg Kashin, she realizes that she has to make a stand.

Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin (/ˈpuːtɪn/; Russian: Влади́мир Влади́мирович Пу́тин; IPA: [vlɐˈdʲimʲɪr vlɐˈdʲimʲɪrəvʲɪtɕ ˈputʲɪn], born 7 October 1952) has been the President of Russia since 7 May 2012, succeeding Dmitry Medvedev. Putin previously served as President from 2000 to 2008, and as Prime Minister from 1999 to 2000 and again from 2008 to 2012. During his last term as Prime Minister, he was also the chairman of United Russia, the ruling party.
For 16 years, Putin was an officer in the KGB, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel before he retired to enter politics in his native Saint Petersburg in 1991. In September 2011, following a change in the law extending the presidential term from four years to six, Putin announced that he would seek a third, non-consecutive term as President in the 2012 presidential election, an announcement which led to large-scale protests in many Russian cities. In March 2012, he won the election, which was criticized for procedural irregularities, and is serving a six-year term.

Last Sunday, North Korea tested a ballistic missile that might be capable of reaching the U.S. military base on Guam. It fell in the Sea of Japan — according to U.S. reports, just 60 miles south of the Russian port of Vladivostok. But their agenda is also to keep the political opposition from spreading their views among the Russians. We meet 19-year-old Marsha, a Nashi commissar and spokesperson. Marsha is a middle class girl and her family lives, like any other average Russian, in a small flat in the province. Marsha, a young and ambitious girl, seduced by the energy of the movement, the future prospects and opportunities that this organization would be able to provide, joined the Nashi at the age of 15. In almost no time she progressed to the very top of the organization, becoming the protégé of Russia's Minister of Youth. She has posed with her much admired political leader and icon, Vladimir Putin – and on one occasion, even kissed him when he attended a Nashi meeting. Marsha belongs to the educated, well-mannered and well-spoken part of Nashi. But according to the opposition, Nashi also has a radical wing that is secretly responsible for threats and violent attacks against anyone who doesn’t agree with Putin. When Marsha is up for election within Nashi and loses to a candidate whose program is called “fighting the enemies of Russia”, she starts questioning her role in the Nashi movement for the first time. She meets people with other political views including the journalist Oleg Khasin with whom she debates on television. And then the unexpected happens. Although they passionately disagree, Marsha and Oleg become close friends. Marsha’s new acquaintances soon get her in trouble with Nashi and when “unknown perpetrators” attack Oleg Kashin, she realizes that she has to make a stand. -

Vladimir Putin was born on October 7, 1952 in Leningrad. “I come from an ordinary family, and this is how I lived for a long time, nearly my whole life. I lived as an average, normal person and I have always maintained that connection,” Mr Putin recalls.
ladimir Putin’s mother, Maria Shelomova, was a very kind, benevolent person.
“We lived simply - cabbage soup, cutlets, pancakes, but on Sundays and holidays my Mom would bake very delicious stuffed buns [pirozhki] with cabbage, meat and rice, and curd tarts [vatrushki],” Mr Putin says.
His mother did not approve of his decision to do judo. “Every time I went to a practice session, she would grumble, ‘He’s off to his fights again.’” Things changed after Vladimir Putin’s coach visited his home and told his parents about what he did and what he achieved; the family’s attitude toward this sport changed.
His father, Vladimir Putin, participated in the war. In the 1950s, he worked as a security guard and later as a foreman at the carriage works.
“My father was born in St Petersburg in 1911. When World War I began, life in St Petersburg became hard, people were starving, so the entire family moved to Pominovo, a village in the Tver Region my grandmother came from. Incidentally, my relatives still vacation in the house where my grandparents lived. It was in Pominovo that my father met my mother, and they got married at the age of 17.”
After the war, the Putin family moved into a room in a communal apartment [kommunalka], in a typical St Petersburg dwelling house on Baskov Lane. Vladimir Putin recalls, “It was a building with a well-like yard. Fifth floor. No elevator. Before the war [World War II], my parents occupied half of the house in Peterhof and were very proud of the living standards they had achieved then. It wasn’t really much, but it seemed like an ultimate dream to them.”
School years
A troublemaker, not a Pioneer
Even before he finished school, Vladimir Putin wanted to work in intelligence. He went to a public reception office of the KGB Directorate to find out how to become an intelligence officer. There, he was told that first, he would have to either serve in the army or complete college, preferably with a degree in law.
“And from that moment, I began preparing myself to enter the law department at Leningrad State University,” Mr Putin notes.
In 1970, Vladimir Putin was admitted to law department at Leningrad State University. “We had a class of 100 people, and only 10 of them entered immediately after high school, the rest had already completed military service. So for us, the high-school graduates, only one out of 40 was admitted. I got four out of five for the essay, but top marks for everything else, so I passed.”
“When I began studying at the university, new goals and new values emerged. I mainly focused on studies, and began seeing sports as secondary. But, of course, I trained on a regular basis and participated in nation-wide competitions, almost out of habit.”
After graduating from Leningrad State University, Putin was assigned to work in the state security agencies. “My perception of the KGB was based on the idealistic stories I heard about intelligence.”
He was first appointed to the Directorate secretariat, then the counterintelligence division, where he worked for about five months. Half a year later, he was sent to operations personnel retraining courses.
Mr Putin spent another six months working in the counterintelligence division.
That was when he drew attention from foreign intelligence officers. “Fairly quickly, I left for special training in Moscow, where I spent a year. Then I returned again to Leningrad, worked there in the First Main Directorate – the intelligence service. That directorate had branches in major cities of the Soviet Union, including Leningrad. I worked there for about four and a half years.”
Then Mr Putin returned again to Moscow to study at the Andropov Red Banner Institute, where he was trained for his trip to Germany.
In 1960-1968, Vladimir Putin attended Primary School No. 193 in Leningrad. After the eighth grade, he entered High School No. 281, a chemistry-focused magnet school under the aegis of a technology institute, completing his studies there in 1970.

The idea of a grand bargain between the United States and Russia is less popular in Washington than ever before. And yet one of the biggest foreign policy problems for the United States — North Korea — cannot be resolved without Russia's participation. In recent years, Russian President Vladimir Putin has made sure to rebuild a close relationship with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, and it's no longer enough to talk to China to mitigate the Stalinist state's aggressiveness.
Last Sunday, North Korea tested a ballistic missile that might be capable of reaching the U.S. military base on Guam. It fell in the Sea of Japan — according to U.S. reports, just 60 miles south of the Russian port of Vladivostok. The White House said in a statement, "With the missile impacting so close to Russian soil — in fact, closer to Russia than to Japan — the President cannot imagine that Russia is pleased."

The core of it is that when the USSR was dismantled the West continued with the tactics of the Cold war and continued to treat Russia as an adversary despite the end of the defining ideological difference.
From their point of view the acquiescence of Russia to the Wests demands in terms of economic policy were met with encirclement, missile shields aimed at achieving Nuclear first strike capability and colour revolutions on their borders to replace their allies with the stooges of the West.

Nashi is an increasingly popular political youth organization with direct ties to The Kremlin. Officially, its goal is to support the current political system by creating a future elite among the brightest and most loyal Russian teenagers. But their agenda is also to keep the political opposition from spreading their views among the Russians.
We meet 19-year-old Marsha, a Nashi commissar and spokesperson. Marsha is a middle class girl and her family lives, like any other average Russian, in a small flat in the province. Marsha, a young and ambitious girl, seduced by the energy of the movement, the future prospects and opportunities that this organization would be able to provide, joined the Nashi at the age of 15. In almost no time she progressed to the very top of the organization, becoming the protégé of Russia's Minister of Youth. She has posed with her much admired political leader and icon, Vladimir Putin – and on one occasion, even kissed him when he attended a Nashi meeting.
Marsha belongs to the educated, well-mannered and well-spoken part of Nashi. But according to the opposition, Nashi also has a radical wing that is secretly responsible for threats and violent attacks against anyone who doesn’t agree with Putin.
When Marsha is up for election within Nashi and loses to a candidate whose program is called “fighting the enemies of Russia”, she starts questioning her role in the Nashi movement for the first time. She meets people with other political views including the journalist Oleg Khasin with whom she debates on television. And then the unexpected happens. Although they passionately disagree, Marsha and Oleg become close friends.
Marsha’s new acquaintances soon get her in trouble with Nashi and when “unknown perpetrators” attack Oleg Kashin, she realizes that she has to make a stand.

It must have been your orders that sent Russian troops into the territory of a sovereign country – Crimea first, and then whatever it is that’s going on in Eastern Ukraine. Now you’ve got a big problem with the currency of Russia, and you’re going to need help and support and understanding from outside countries, particularly from the West. So can I say to you, can I ask you now, would you care to take this opportunity to say to people from the West that you have no desire to carry on with the new Cold War, and that you will do whatever you can to sort out the problems in Ukraine? Thank you!

The job of an investigative journalist is often hard work, stressful and requires a huge amount of determination, but it can also be incredibly rewarding.
These journalists play an important role in the upholding of a just democracy – in fact, their investigative work can often be the only way of uncovering information about topics of public interest.
Award-winning BBC reporter John Sweeney explained that determination, skepticism and persistence are crucial skills for those looking to enter the profession.
The most satisfying stories are those that powerful people don't want the public to know about, he said.
Reporting for programmes such as Panorama and Newsnight, Sweeney has traveled undercover to gain unprecedented access to North Korea, confronted Russian president Vladimir Putin over killings in Ukraine and helped free many innocent mothers from jail sentences that convicted them of killing their children.
He told Journalism.co.uk that one of the best things about his job is that he is able to "supply a voice to the voiceless", but explains that the job comes with a range of moral responsibilities that one must adhere to, in order to prevent exposing the wrong people or "getting into trouble".

Der dokumentarische Politthriller «Khodorkovsky» sorgte an der Premiere in Zürich für Begeisterung. Cyril Tuschi über seinen ersten Langdokfilm und den spannenden Weg, den er bis zur Vollendung dieses so wertvollen wie packenden Zeitdokumentes gegangen ist.

Cyril Tuschi wurde 1969 in Frankfurt am Main geboren. In den späten 80er-Jahren studierte er Philosophie in den USA, eröffnete einen Nachtclub und arbeitete am Stuttgarter Staatstheater. 1992 drehte er schliesslich seinen ersten Kurzfilm FRANKFURT AM MEER und wurde sogleich zu diversen deutschen Filmfestivals eingeladen. Schliesslich schrieb er sich an der Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg ein. Weitere Filme von Cyril Tuschi sind u.a. NACHTLAND, eine Kafka-Adaption die auf der Berlinale gezeigt wurde und 1996 den New York Academy Camera Prize gewann; TURN (1997) und diverse Musikvideos. Sein Langfilmdebüt bestritt Tuschi mit SOMMERHUNDESÖHNE (2004), einem Roadmovie, das den Publikumspreis beim Festival des deutschen Films in Ludwigshafen gewann. Cyril Tuschi und seine Produktionsfirma Lala Films konzentrieren sich auf die Bereiche Stoffentwicklung und internationale Koproduktionen. Lala Films ist im Herzen von Berlin angesiedelt und hat ein zweites Büro auf Schloss Beesenstedt, in der Nähe von Leipzig, wo zweimal im Jahr ein Filmfestival organisiert wird. Derzeit steckt Lala Films mitten in den Vorbereitungen für eine Literaturadaption nach Henning Ahrens «Lauf Jäger Lauf» und einem Drama über Wikileaks und den Gründer Julian Assange.
