Wood ash is the residue powder left after the combustion of wood, such as burning wood in a home fireplace or an industrial power plant. It is used traditionally by gardeners as a good source of potash for domestic gardens or any garden.
Many studies have been conducted regarding the chemical composition of wood ash, with widely varying results. Some quote calcium carbonate (CaCO3) as the major constituent, others find no carbonate at all, but calcium oxide (CaO) instead. Some show as much as twelve percent iron oxide while others show none, though iron oxide is often introduced through contamination with soil. A comprehensive set of analyses of wood ash composition from many tree species has been carried out by Emil Wolff, among others.
There are several factors which have a major impact on the composition:
Wood is a porous and fibrous structural tissue found in the stems and roots of trees and other woody plants.
It has been used for thousands of years for both fuel and as a construction material. It is an organic material, a natural composite of cellulose fibers (which are strong in tension) embedded in a matrix of lignin which resists compression. Wood is sometimes defined as only the secondary xylem in the stems of trees, or it is defined more broadly to include the same type of tissue elsewhere such as in the roots of trees or shrubs. In a living tree it performs a support function, enabling woody plants to grow large or to stand up by themselves. It also conveys water and nutrients between the leaves, other growing tissues, and the roots. Wood may also refer to other plant materials with comparable properties, and to material engineered from wood, or wood chips or fiber.
The Earth contains about 434 billion cubic meters of growing stock forest, 47% of which is commercial. As an abundant, carbon-neutral renewable resource, woody materials have been of intense interest as a source of renewable energy. In 1991, approximately 3.5 cubic kilometers of wood were harvested. Dominant uses were for furniture and building construction.
Ash or ashes are the solid remains of fires. Specifically, it refers to all non-aqueous, non-gaseous residues that remains after something is burned. In analytical chemistry, in order to analyse the mineral and metal content of chemical samples, ash is the non-gaseous, non-liquid residue after a complete 100% combustion.
Ashes as the end product of incomplete combustion will be mostly mineral, but usually still contain an amount of combustible organic or other oxidizable residues. The most well-known type of ash is wood ash, as a product of wood combustion in campfires, fireplaces, etc.. The darker the wood ashes, the higher the content of remaining charcoal will be due to incomplete combustion.
Like soap, ash is also a disinfecting agent (alkaline). WHO recommended ash or sand as alternative to soap when soap is not available.
There are TONS of uses for all that wood ash that your wood stove and fireplace produce. Here are a few.... 1. De-skunk pets. A handful rubbed on Fido's coat neutralizes the lingering odor. 2. Hide stains on paving. This Old House technical editor Mark Powers absorbs wet paint spatters on cement by sprinkling ash directly on the spot; it blends in with a scuff of his boot, 3. Enrich compost. Before the organic compound get applied to soil, enhance its nutrients by sprinkling in a few ashes, says the host of radio's You Bet Your Garden, Mike McGrath. Adding too much, though, ruins the mix. 4. Block garden pests. Spread evenly around garden beds, ash repels slugs and snails. 5. Melt ice. TOH building editor Tom Baker finds it adds traction and de-ices without hurting soil or concrete un...

Throughout the course of our testing garden assumptions series I have been asked a number of times about the use of wood ash as a soil amendment in vegetable gardens. This interested me as often I will add the ash from my small fire pit into my compost as it is something that I have seen family do in the past. Today I thought I would look into the practice to see if using wood ash has benefit in the garden while diverting it from landfill. Today’s general hypothesis is that Wood ash has benefit when used in a vegetable garden. In order to understand this issue a little more we will need to ask some much more specific questions Is wood ash a fertilizer? Will wood ash change the pH of my soil Is wood ash a fertilizer? The University of Wisconsin Extensions produced a information bullet...
I made some crude soap from wood ashes and lard It did not look too pretty but it worked and I learned a couple of things about soapmaking the way it was possibly done in the pioneer days. I only made a very small batch for experimenting but it would be easy enough to increase the amount produced.
Here's the method I use to make wood ash lye. I gained an interest for this while reading the Laura Ingalls books to my daughters a couple of years ago. I decided to make soap like they did, and started saving my ash. With the help of the internet, I have made a successful batch of soap! I thought the soap would be merely sufficient, and I’d heard that wood ash lye soap was greasy. Well, the soap I made feels wonderful and I’m still waiting for the bars to cure. Later, I intend to make a video showing how I make the soap using the lye made in this video. I hope it's helpful.
I'm using would ask for my pellet stove in my garden instead of purchasing. Limestone it does the same job only difference is free.

The second of three films in the Evil Dead series is part horror, part comedy, with Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) once again battling horrifying demons at a secluded cabin in the woods. Ash soon discovers there is no escaping the woods.

I have been looking forward to this challenge all year, because it is an opportunity to share some of my methods and tips that I use to turn, dry, and re-turn bowls from green wood. Most of all I want to show two things: First, the "pivot" cut that I use to round blanks roughed out with a chainsaw, allowing one to bypass the bandsaw (either by preference or because some turners may not have a bandsaw.) Second is my use of alcohol soaking to dry bowl blanks in about one eighth of the normal time. As well, I show an additional re-mounting method that you can add to your repertoire. Cover tool: "Green bowl gouge" (Actually a 40/40 grind but with the left wing swept back, and an extra long maple handle.) Woods: Ash; Callery Pear

Six o'clock in the morning--I'm yawning
Get out of this bed
My heart started racing--now pacing
What was that you said?
Waiting so long for this day
And tomorrow we laugh
Hope the neighbours will open their papers
To my photograph
Chorus:
Of course I love you!
And I'll be careful, oh so careful
But I must win
There's no use waiting--watching, waiting
Got to keep my five-star rating, too
Now I run like the devil, draw level
You're crowding my day
Your concentration gives me stimulation
Get out of my way!
Feel the air rush past my face in first place, without thought to me
Mass attention becomes an extension of winning to me
Chorus
In control, speed kills, speed thrills
We are the power--come closer
Black and white soon in my time
The winning course--it's over
The winning course--take over
The winning course--it's up to me
[Instrumental bridge]
Now I run like the devil, draw level
You're crowding my day
Your concentration gives me stimulation
Get out of my way!
Chorus
