Voyager 1 is a space probe launched by NASA on September 5, 1977. Part of the Voyager program to study the outer Solar System, Voyager 1 launched 16 days after its twin, Voyager 2. Having operated for 38 years, 5 months and 12 days, the spacecraft still communicates with the Deep Space Network to receive routine commands and return data. At a distance of 134 AU (2.00×1010 km) as of winter 2016, it is the farthest spacecraft from Earth and the only one in interstellar space.
The probe's primary mission objectives included flybys of Jupiter, Saturn, and Saturn's large moon, Titan. While the spacecraft's course could have been altered to include a Pluto encounter by forgoing the Titan flyby, exploration of the moon, which was known to have a substantial atmosphere, took priority. It studied the weather, magnetic fields, and rings of the two planets and was the first probe to provide detailed images of their moons.
After completing its primary mission with the flyby of Saturn on November 20, 1980, Voyager 1 began an extended mission to explore the regions and boundaries of the outer heliosphere. On August 25, 2012, Voyager 1 crossed the heliopause to become the first spacecraft to enter interstellar space and study the interstellar medium. Voyager 1's extended mission is expected to continue until around 2025, when its radioisotope thermoelectric generators will no longer supply enough electric power to operate any of its scientific instruments.
Voyager may refer to:
The Solar System is the gravitationally bound system comprising the Sun and the objects that orbit it, either directly or indirectly. Of those objects that orbit the Sun directly, the largest eight are the planets, with the remainder being significantly smaller objects, such as dwarf planets and small Solar System bodies. Of the objects that orbit the Sun indirectly, the moons, two are larger than the smallest planet, Mercury.
The Solar System formed 4.6 billion years ago from the gravitational collapse of a giant interstellar molecular cloud. The vast majority of the system's mass is in the Sun, with most of the remaining mass contained in Jupiter. The four smaller inner planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, are terrestrial planets, being primarily composed of rock and metal. The four outer planets are giant planets, being substantially more massive than the terrestrials. The two largest, Jupiter and Saturn, are gas giants, being composed mainly of hydrogen and helium; the two outermost planets, Uranus and Neptune, are ice giants, being composed mostly of substances with relatively high melting points compared with hydrogen and helium, called ices, such as water, ammonia and methane. All planets have almost circular orbits that lie within a nearly flat disc called the ecliptic.

The Voyager 1 space probe is the furthest man-made object from Earth, and the fastest. But right now, it's moving towards us. Relatively speaking. At Mission Control for the Deep Space Network, inside NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, let's talk about why -- and about how to stay in touch with something so small and so far away. The Voyager 1 spacecraft, after a 36-year journey, has been announced by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to have officially left the solar system and has become the first human-made object to reach interstellar space. Here is a brief history of the Voyager program, from its launch, exploration of the outer solar system and its exodus into interstellar space and how scientists at NASA were able to use Voyager 1 and 2 to discover enormous knowledge about the solar system and beyond. The fact that these spacecraft are still functioning after 35 years is a testament to the skill and ingenuity of the engineers and scientists who worked on the program.
Cosmic Journeys examines the great promise of the Voyager mission and where it will lead us in our grand ambition to move out beyond our home planet. The two Voyager spacecraft are part of an ancient quest to push beyond our boundaries... to see what lies beyond the horizon. Now tens of billions of kilometers from Earth, two spacecraft are streaking out into the void. What will we learn about the Galaxy, the Universe, and ourselves from Voyager's epic Journey to the stars? December 19, 1972... the splashdown of the Apollo 17 crew capsule marked the end of the golden age of manned spaceflight. The Mercury.... Gemini... and Apollo programs had proven that we could send people into space... To orbit the Earth.... Fly out beyond our planet... Then land on the moon and walk among its ancient c...
NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft has traveled beyond our solar bubble and has entered interstellar space. During a NASA Headquarters briefing, the Voyager team assessing the data determined the craft is in a transitional region immediately outside the solar bubble where some effects from our sun are still evident. New, unexpected data indicate that Voyager 1 has been traveling through the plasma, or ionized gas, that originates in the space between the stars. The spacecraft is now bathed in interstellar plasma, the material ejected from the death of nearby stars millions of years ago. Speakers on the occasion were - Ed Stone- Voyager project scientist, California Institute of Technology; Don Gurnett - Voyager plasma wave investigation principal investigator, University of Iowa; Suzanne Dodd -...

I hear you clearly
Though you're hardly in my view
For I'll listen in the way in which you told me
Hold them nearly, all these murmurs of the earth
Pushing forth white waves when something hits the water
And all directions, they point inside of you
And all connections, to life beholding
The pebble in the puddle made the ripple in the water
Made the tree casting shadows on the river through the swaying limbs I see
Voyager 2, you're leaving together
Send help soon
And I've seen spirits and children all waiting, waiting for you
You draw closer now with a message held within
From all who gazed into the sky in silent wonder
What a number, the living and departed
For people all alone forever searching for an answer
Almost screaming to be heard
Modern words confusing their own need to listen
Spirit foresee endless course of aboriginal direction
Answer prism, resurrection, the earth, the child, the sun
And the stars we see
Voyager 2
You're leading the rescue
Send help soon
Well I've seen spirits and children all waiting, waiting for you
They're all waiting for you
And so with patience, and the deepest fascination, I greet the day we'll somehow be together. There's time forever, in all the miracle believer, well I traveled all this way to finally see you
And all directions, they move inside of you
And all connections, the life beholding
The pebble in the puddle made the ripple in the water
Made the child sleeping soundly by the river
Voyager 2
You're leading us home now
Send help soon
Well I've seen spirits and children all waiting, waiting for you
They're all waiting for you x 2
They're all waiting, all waiting, all waiting, they're all waiting for you
