Van Alstyne is a Dutch surname also found as "Van Alstine". Notable people with the surname include:
Florian ZaBach (August 15, 1918 – February 25, 2006) was an American musician and TV personality.
His recording of "The Hot Canary" sold a million copies and reached the top 15 on the Pop charts in 1951. "Believe It or Not" timed his violin performance of "The Flight of the Bumblebee" and wrote, "he plays 12.8 notes per second ... faster than any known violinist in history". He hosted a television show in 1954 that was aired in cities around the world.
In 1960, for his work on television, ZaBach was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6505 Hollywood Blvd.
ZaBach was born in Chicago, the son and only child of Florian ZaBach Sr., who played clarinet with the Vienna Philharmonic, and Anna Morganfort-ZaBach. He studied music and learned to play the violin with his father and at the Chicago Cosmopolitan Conservatory of Music. At the age of 12 he debuted with the Chicago Symphony orchestra playing the Mendelssohn concerto. He went to the Prague Conservatory in Czechoslovakia to further his violin studies.
James Edward Wilbur (born 1898, Bournemouth, England – died 1968, Cape Town, South Africa) was a British bandleader and prolifically recorded musician identified with and influential in the era of Big Band and British dance band music.
Wilber was born as Wilbur Blinco in 1898 at Leamington Spa. He became recording director for Dominion Records in 1928, but left Dominion shortly before its demise and became recording manager for the Crystalate Gramophone Record Manuracturing Company. With his own name and under many pseudonyms, his recordings appeared on a variety of labels including Imperial, Eclipse, Rex,and Crown.
Wilbur broadcast for the BBC in the 1930s, often featuring guest artists such as Fats Waller. In 1941 he appeared as himself in the film Hi Gang!.
Jay Wilbur and His Band performed extensively for Allied military servicemembers during World War II. He is known for recording established tunes while rendering them in foxtrot style.
Wilbur was the third husband of Ouida MacDermott, the youngest child of G. H. MacDermott. He died in South Africa in 1968.
Marshall W. Van Alstyne (born March 28, 1962 in Columbus, Ohio) is a professor and chair of Information System Department at Boston University and research associate at the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy. His work focuses on the economics of information. Van Alstyne grew up in North Carolina before earning a B.A in computer science from Yale University, and M.S. and Ph.D. in information systems from the MIT Sloan School of Management. He is the son of constitutional law scholar William Van Alstyne. From 1997 to 2004 he was an assistant professor at the University of Michigan School of Information.
He has made substantial contributions to understanding information markets. With graduate students Loder and Wash, he was the first to prove that applying a signaling and screening mechanism to email spam can, in theory, create more value for consumers than a perfect filter (see also "attention economics"). With professor Geoffrey G Parker, he contributed to the founding literature on "two-sided networks," a refinement of network effects that explains how firms can profitably price information at zero. Subsidized pricing and two-sided network effects can cause markets to concentrate in the hands of a few firms. These properties inform both firms’ strategies and antitrust law.

Platforms connect two types of users in order to exchange something of value. This is different from the traditional pipeline model of business where something of value is created by transferring it from producer to producer with the consumer receiving it at the last step. Platforms are dominating production processes particularly because they reduce the costs of value creation, consumption, and quality control. Platforms serve consumer-facing markets as well as business-to-busin...
