A poetry slam is a competition at which poets read or recite original work. These performances are usually judged by selected members of the audience or by a panel of judges.
American poet Marc Smith is credited with starting the poetry slam at the Get Me High Lounge in Chicago in November 1984. In July 1986, the slam moved to its permanent home, the Green Mill Jazz Club. In August 1988, the first poetry slam was held in New York City at the Nuyorican Poet's Cafe and hosted by Bob Holman. In 1990, the first National Poetry Slam took place in Fort Mason, San Francisco, involving a team from Chicago, a team from San Francisco, and an individual poet from New York. Soon afterward, poetry slam had become so popular that people were able to make full-time careers as slam poets; they traveled around the country and performed.
In 2001, the September 11 attacks actually had an interesting impact on poetry slam. This was because many performers were stuck in cities they had been performing in before the attack, and they could not get home because flights were down. After the attacks, a new wave of poetry slam started within New York City with the focus on the community of poets coming together to speak about and try to understand the terrorist attacks.

Elysium ☀. How can I seek Paradise when we live in Hell? My brothers and sisters do not protect each other, let alone the weak The people's morals have been afflicted by apathy and cruelty beyond the usual greed We have lost our way Remaining silent while others hurt But shouting as corruption mercilessly pervades. Why do we hinder not help? We have become accustomed to darkness and the innocents' yelp Abandoned our guardianship of this glorious world Become true takers and ravenous locusts Made of our relationship with nature, parasitic Thinking having more than others, idyllic Lied to ourselves that we are wiser than those who came before Nirvana comes in admitting who we are, living freely without representation and making those tough choices. Starring out my window
And the world passes by
I can’t help but wonder
Asking why
What did I do?
What did I say?
To make you leave baby
To make you go so far away
[Chorus]
Someone to love me
Someone to hold
Someone to talk when I’m feeling alone
You’d be everything to me
Oh and surely you could see
I was meant to love you
Someone to love
Up here in my bedroom
And the world spins away
I replay the daydream
Where you say
“What can I do?
What can I say?
To bring you back baby
You’re so far away.”
[Chorus]
So long without you
My heart’s been crying the blues
Heaven forgive me if I’m not over you
You’d be everything to me
And surely you could see
I was meant to love you
