National security is a concept that a government, along with its parliaments, should protect the state and its citizens against all kind of "national" crises through a variety of power projections, such as political power, diplomacy, economic power, military might, and so on.
The concept developed mostly in the United States after World War II. Initially focusing on military might, it now encompasses a broad range of facets, all of which impinge on the non-military or economic security of the nation and the values espoused by the national society. Accordingly, in order to possess national security, a nation needs to possess economic security, energy security, environmental security, etc. Security threats involve not only conventional foes such as other nation-states but also non-state actors such as violent non-state actors, narcotic cartels, multinational corporations and non-governmental organisations; some authorities include natural disasters and events causing severe environmental damage in this category.

The United States of America (USA), commonly referred to as the United States (U.S.) or America, is a federal republic composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major territories and various possessions. The 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C., are in central North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is in the northwestern part of North America and the state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific. The territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. At 3.8 million square miles (9.842 million km2) and with over 320 million people, the country is the world's third or fourth-largest by total area and the third most populous. It is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large-scale immigration from many countries. The geography and climate of the United States are also extremely diverse, and the country is home to a wide variety of wildlife.
A National Security Adviser serves as the chief adviser to a national government on matters of security. He or she is not usually a member of the Cabinet but is usually a member of various military or security councils.

A National Security Council (NSC) is usually an executive branch governmental body responsible for coordinating policy on national security issues and advising chief executives on matters related to national security. An NSC is often headed by a national security advisor and staffed with senior-level officials from military, diplomatic, intelligence, law enforcement and other governmental bodies. The functions and responsibilities of an NSC at the strategic state level are different from those of the United Nations Security Council, which is more of a diplomatic forum.
Occasionally a nation will be ruled by a similarly named body, such as "the National Security Committee" or "Council for National Security". These bodies are often a result of the establishment or preservation of a military dictatorship (or some other national crisis), do not always have statutory approval, and are usually intended to have transitory or provisional powers. See also: coup d'état.
Some nations may have a similar body which is not formally part of the executive government. For example, the Central National Security Commission in China is an organ of the Communist Party of China, the sole ruling party, rather than an organ of the executive government.
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the five principal organs of the United Nations, charged with the maintenance of international peace and security as well as accepting new members to the United Nations and approving any changes to its United Nations Charter. Its powers include the establishment of peacekeeping operations, the establishment of international sanctions, and the authorization of military action through Security Council resolutions; it is the only UN body with the authority to issue binding resolutions to member states. The Security Council held its first session on 17 January 1946.
Like the UN as a whole, the Security Council was created following World War II to address the failings of another international organization, the League of Nations, in maintaining world peace. In its early decades, the body was largely paralyzed by the Cold War division between the US and USSR and their respective allies, though it authorized interventions in the Korean War and the Congo Crisis and peacekeeping missions in the Suez Crisis, Cyprus, and West New Guinea. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, UN peacekeeping efforts increased dramatically in scale, and the Security Council authorized major military and peacekeeping missions in Kuwait, Namibia, Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Under the Goldwater-Nicholas Defense Department Reorganization Act of 1986, the President must submit an annual report on the national security strategy of the United States to Congress. In roughly 9 months, a new national security strategy will be produced. Much of the work will be done between now and mid-Fall, so now is the time for experts to weigh in on the challenges and opportunities around creating an effective strategy. Our panel of experts will provide the Defense, Development, Homeland Security, and State Department perspectives on the upcoming 2018 U.S. National Security Strategy.

Two former National Security Advisors and a former member of the NSC Staff – Stephen Hadley, Colin Powell, and Meghan O’Sullivan– discuss the purpose, make-up, function, and history of the National Security Council (NSC) for CFR’s Model Diplomacy, a free multimedia program that engages students through role-play to understand the challenges of shaping U.S. foreign policy in an interconnected world. The NSC is an advisory rather than a decision-making body, says Stephen Hadley, responsible for issues that require the attention and coordination of multiple federal agencies. Each American president possesses a measure of flexibility in designing the structure of the NSC so that it can adapt to his unique management style. The NSC, says Colin Powell, is intended to draw attention to and advis...

This week, we speak with Jeremy Scahill, national security correspondent for "The Nation," whose work covering America's special operations [forces] and targeted killings in Afghanistan, Yemen, and Somalia is chronicled in the recently released documentary, "Dirty Wars: The World is a Battlefield." As the U.S. continues to expand its use of covert counterterrorism measures worldwide, Scahill argues that far from making Americans safer, U.S. covert counterterrorism measures are in fact undermining national security. The RNC managed to go through their entire convention without mentioning climate change. The Democrats briefly mentioned the threat at their convention. The corporate media rarely talks about climate change. But experts around the globe can’t be any more clear: Climate change is fueling armed conflict around the globe and it is the greatest national security threat to the United States. Meghan O’Sullivan says that the interagency process is the ideal way for the best policy options to come to the president’s attention. The Pentagon is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, located in Arlington County, Virginia. As a symbol of the U.S. military, "the Pentagon" is often used metonymically to refer to the U.S. Department of Defense. The Pentagon was designed by American architect George Bergstrom (1876–1955), and built by general contractor John McShain of Philadelphia. Ground was broken for construction on September 11, 1941, and the building was dedicated on January 15, 1943.
