Today, Madam Ama Osaa, a single parent and mother of 4, wears broad smiles on her face as she looks intently into the future with hope for her palm kernel oil business. “For me, it has been a lifeline. It has really wiped away my tears and put smiles on my face”, says Ama.

In September 2015, 193 countries adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the follow-up framework to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda.

Fonio (known locally as ‘egg of the world’) thrives in arid lands making it suitable for cultivation even on degraded fields. UNDP working with GEF Small Grant Programme procured and installed equipment for processing and packaging ‘fonio’. The intervention now makes it possible for the group to process up to 1,500 kilograms of the crop each week.
