The Virginians (also known as the Richmond Virginians) is a barbershop chorus located in Richmond, Virginia. Mike Wallen is currently its musical director, and has been serving in this capacity since 1998. It recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and is one of the oldest continuous singing groups in the Greater Richmond Area. Originally chartered in 1952 as the Tobaccoland Chorus, the chapter was renamed to the Virginians, in 1990.
The Virginians competed at the 2000 Barbershop Harmony Society International Competition, held at Kansas City, Missouri, numbering 100 on stage. That same year, it sponsored a major benefit performance (featuring the Richmond Symphony Orchestra) for the WRVA "Alden Aaroe Shoe Fund" at the Landmark Theater. The Virginians chorus was recently selected to participate at the seventh annual Russian Barbershop Music Festival with Greg Lyne, held in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The active members of the chorus draw primarily from the city of Richmond, Henrico, Hanover, Chesterfield and eastern Goochland counties. Some members come from as far away as Charlottesville and the Northern Neck, with a strong contingent from the Williamsburg area.
The Virginians: A Tale of the Last Century (1857-59) is a historical novel by William Makepeace Thackeray which forms a sequel to his Henry Esmond and is also loosely linked to Pendennis.
It tells the story of Henry Esmond's twin grandsons, George and Henry Warrington. Henry's romantic entanglements with an older woman lead up to his taking a commission in the British army and fighting under the command of General Wolfe at the capture of Quebec. On the outbreak of the American War of Independence he takes the revolutionary side. George, who is also a British officer, thereupon resigns his commission rather than take up arms against his brother.
Critical reception of the book was on the whole favourable, and the novel has continued to be considered one of the standard works of 19th century fiction, though many critics have held that the novel's plotting was not of the tightest.Anthony Trollope's opinion was typical:
The Virginians was issued by Thackeray's publishers, Bradbury and Evans, in 24 monthly parts, the first one appearing on November 1, 1857. It was illustrated by the author himself. The print-run of 20,000 for the first number proved to be too optimistic, and was progressively reduced to 13,000 for the last seven. Thackeray was originally to have been paid £300 per number, but the disappointing sales resulted in this being reduced to £250.
The Virginian may refer to:
The Virginians (Ross Gorman, reeds / director) - This small group of "hot" players from the Whiteman orchestra served as Victor's house jazz band beginning in 1921 and used Whiteman-supplied arrangements. The band was conducted by Whiteman reedman Ross Gorman, best remembered today as the musician for whom Ferde Grofé scored the clarinet introduction to George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue." Victor house conductor Edward King occasionally substituted as director beginning in October 1922, according to the Victor ledgers, primarily on those sessions at which the Virginians served as accompanists to Isabella Patricola and other singers. A Nat Shilkret Group. Shilkret was one of the most productive musical geniuses ever with as much as five Grammys and a ton of wonderful music. Something we often forget.
Very interesting recording by the small combination from the Whiteman band.
The Virginians were a studio band of the Paul Whiteman Orchestra under the direction of Ross Gorman. Ross Gorman rose to prominence in Paul Whiteman's Orchestra and is probably best remembered today for his original playing of the opening clarinet solo in George Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue. At least thirty people were arrested in West Virginia Saturday as protesters marked a new phase of Operation Appalachian Spring, a campaign to end mountaintop removal mining. The protests came just a week after the Obama administration gave the green light for forty-two more mountaintop removal permits in a major victory for the coal industry. We speak to journalist Jeff Biggers, author of the book United States of Appalachia: How Southern Mountaineers Brought Independence, Culture and Enlightenment to America. Biggers says mountaintop removal is a national issue, not a local one, as many perceive. [includes rush transcript] http://www.democracynow.org/2009/5/29/coal

http://www.democracynow.org - West Virginia has begun partially lifting its ban on tap water five days after a chemical spill in the Elk River. More than 300,000 residents have been unable to use their water for drinking, cooking or bathing since Thursday, when the company Freedom Industries leaked up to 7,500 gallons of 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol (Crude MCHM), an agent used in coal extraction, into the water supply. Scores of schools and businesses have been closed, including in the state capital, Charleston. The ban has been lifted in four zones so far, but is still in effect for a vast majority of residents. Dozens of people have been hospitalized since the spill, with symptoms including nausea, vomiting, dizziness, diarrhea, rashes and reddened skin. We get reaction from Erin Brockovi...
On July 25, 1609, aboard the Virginia Company’s slowing sinking ship the Sea Venture, a company of colonial gentlemen-adventurers, indentured servants, and sailors, all struggled for their lives. The crew plugged holes and splits with every available means and everyone --even the genteel and lordly--took turns carrying water for a time. Aboard the Sea Venture, circumstances forced rich and poor alike to join their labors in common cause and solidarity. The aqueous environment--agitated by catastrophe--dissolved class boundaries. Video from INSP - James Drury and the Virginian Cast talk about 'the man with no name'.
His place as one of the great writers of the 20th century firmly established, William Faulkner accepted an invitation in 1957 from U.Va.'s English department to come to the University as writer-in-residence. Faulkner's appointment was cause for excitement among students and faculty, though the winner of the 1949 Nobel Prize for Literature initially caught Virginians off guard. After Faulkner arrived on Grounds, his "observations on 'Virginia snobs' caused somewhat of a sensation," wrote Virginius Dabney in Mr. Jefferson's University. "He liked the state, he said, 'because Virginians are all snobs and I like snobs.'" For full article, go to http://www.uvamagazine.org/site/c.esJNK1PIJrH/b.4103475//
Turning molehills into mountains
Making big deals out of small ones
Bearing gifts as if they're burdens
This is how it's been
Fear of coming out of my shell
Too many things I can't do too well
Afraid I'll try real hard and I'll fail
This is how it's been
'Til the day you pounded on my heart's door
And you shouted joyfully, "you're not a slave anymore"
You're free to dance (free to dance)
Forget about your two left feet
And you're free to sing (free to sing)
Even joyful noise is music to me
And free to love (free to love)
'Cause I've given you my love and it's made you free (free)
Free
My mind finds hard to believe
That you'd become humanity
And change the course of history
Because you loved me so
And my heart cannot understand
Why you'd accept me as I am
But you say you've always had a plan
And that's all I need to know
So, when I am consumed by what the world will say
It's then you're singing to me as you remove my chains
You're free to dance (free to dance)
Forget about your two left feet
And you're free to sing (free to sing)
Even joyful noise is music to me
And free to love (free to love)
'Cause I've given you my love and it's made you free
Oh, free from worry, free from envy and denial
Free to live, free to give, free to smile
And you're free to dance
Forget about your two left feet
And you're free to sing
Even joyful noise is music to me
And you're free to love
'Cause I've given you my love and it's made you free
I've given you my love and it's made you free
