Anthony James Donegan (29 April 1931 – 3 November 2002), better known as Lonnie Donegan, was a British singer, songwriter and musician, referred to as the King of Skiffle, who influenced 1960s British pop musicians. The British Hit Singles & Albums lists him as "Britain's most successful and influential recording artist before the Beatles". He had 31 UK Top 30 single hits, 24 being successive and three at number one. He was the first British male singer with two US Top 10 hits. Donegan received an Ivor Novello lifetime achievement award in 1997 and in 2000 he was made an MBE.
Lonnie Donegan was born Anthony James Donegan in Bridgeton, Glasgow, Scotland, on 29 April 1931. He was the son of an Irish mother and a Scots father, a professional violinist who had played with the Scottish National Orchestra. In 1933, he moved with his family to East Ham in East London. Donegan was evacuated to Cheshire to escape the Blitz in the Second World War and attended St Ambrose College, Altrincham.
Skiffle is a music genre with jazz, blues, folk and roots influences, usually using homemade or improvised instruments. Originating as a term in the United States in the first half of the 20th century, it became popular again in the UK in the 1950s, where it was mainly associated with musician Lonnie Donegan. Skiffle played a major part in beginning the careers of later eminent jazz, pop, blues, folk and rock musicians and has been seen as a critical stepping stone to the second British folk revival, blues boom and British Invasion of the US popular music scene.
The origins of skiffle are obscure but are generally thought to lie in African-American musical culture in the early 20th century. Skiffle is often said to have developed from New Orleans jazz, but this claim has been disputed. Improvised jug bands playing blues and jazz were common across the American South in the early decades of the 20th century, even if the term skiffle was not used to describe them. They used instruments such as the washboard, jugs, washtub bass, cigar-box fiddle, musical saw and comb-and-paper kazoos, as well as more conventional instruments, such as acoustic guitar and banjo.
The Vipers Skiffle Group – later known simply as The Vipers – were one of the leading British groups during the skiffle period of the mid to late 1950s, and were important in the careers of radio and television presenter Wally Whyton, coffee bar manager Johnny Martyn, wire salesman Jean Van den Bosch, instrument repairer Tony Tolhurst, journalist John Pilgrim, record producer George Martin, and several members of The Shadows.
The group formed in the spring of 1956 in central London, originally as a trio of singer-guitarists comprising Whyton, Johnny Martyn (born John Martyn Booker, 1934 - 2007), and Jean Van den Bosch, who was replaced in 1958 by Freddy Lloyd. Later that summer they added a rhythm section, Tony Tolhurst (bass) and John Pilgrim (washboard), and took up residency at the renowned Soho music venue, the 2i's Coffee Bar. There, they sometimes jammed with jazz musician Mike Pratt and singer Tommy Hicks, later known as Tommy Steele. In September 1956 they were offered an audition with George Martin at Parlophone Records, and won a recording contract.
The Vipers were an Irish new wave group of the late 1970s. A live act fronted by Paul Boyle and virtuoso guitarist George Sweeney, they toured with The Clash and The Jam.
Their debut single "I've Got You"/"No Such Thing" (Mulligan LUNS 718) was released in late 1978. This was heard by the BBC's John Peel who invited the band across the Irish Sea to do a session for his radio program, the Peel Sessions. A permanent move to London led to UK tours with the Boomtown Rats and Thin Lizzy as well as performances including at the Marquee, Music Machine and Fulham Greyhound. A further single, "Take Me" was released in early 1980. A failure to secure long term record company support led to the band splitting up in London in late 1980.
They included Boyle (lead vocals /gtr) Sweeney (lead guitar) Dolan Foley (bass) and Dave Moloney (drums). Hastings performer Bernie Smirnoff (ex Hollywood Killers) took over the drum stool from Moloney in late 1979. After the Vipers, Boyle later changed his career to acting whilst his colleagues remained musicians, Foley going on to Dublin legends the Blades, Moloney to the Cajun Kings and Sweeney the Fat Lady Sings. Bernie Smirnoff went on to play for my eyes my eyes and now plays for Kingbathmat.

A short history from the Culture Show
Very rare video performance by british pioneers of skiffle. Taken from old Russian (!) music movie "Девушка с гитарой" ("A girl with guitar") (1958).
The cover version of Buddy Holly's classic song, "That'll Be The Day", recorded by The Quarrymen on 14th July, 1958 at Percy Phillips' Studio, in Liverpool. On this day, The Quarrymen made what would become known as The Beatles' first recording. In addition to John, Paul and George, the band still included Colin Hanton on drums and new member, John "Duff" Lowe, on piano. They are wearing traditional costumes, have false moustache and their old fashioned singing sounds terrible. C/U shot of barber shaving a customer. This is a project that I have been working on for a while now, It looks at the British skiffle scene in Portsmouth. This is the short version, I am currently editing the longer 30 minute cut. I shot this film with the Panasonic GH3. *Updated with improvements to audio, and captions!
This video was shot during the recording of 'railroad bill's skiffle group's album in London's famous Toe Rag Studios. This studio is fully analogue and the acoustics are amazing.
The iPhone 4 provides a great fun platform for shooting video, but combined with the 8mm Vintage Camera App by Nexvio and the Owle Bubo camera mount and its back to my teen film making years with a big smile. This short iFilm was shot in Colombia Road flower market in East London on a wonderful crisp winters day in January 2011. The music used is Train to Nowwhere from NeoSounds.com and the skiffle band in the film are unknown but thanks lads for a £1 well spent.

Summer Wind is a 1965 song, with music by Henry Mayer and lyrics by Johnny Mercer. A cool, nostalgic tale of a fleeting romance, it is most known for a 1966 recording by Frank Sinatra that is informed by what NPR called "a majestic sadness." It is largely forgotten that singer Wayne Newton had the first national chart hit (1965).[1] The Sinatra version originally appeared on his Strangers in the Night album, and hit number one on Billboard magazine's Easy Listening survey. By the 2000s, it was one of Sinatra's most-used recordings in various contexts, including a mid-2000s television ad campaign for Mastercard and Major League Baseball. Covers In 1967, Shirley Bassey recorded the song for her album And We Were Lovers. In 1974, author Johnny Mercer recorded the song for his album My Hu...

Together with Paul McCartney, he formed one of the most celebrated songwriting partnerships of the 20th century. Born and raised in Liverpool, Lennon became involved as a teenager in the skiffle craze; his first band, The Quarrymen, evolved into The Beatles in 1960. As the group disintegrated towards the end of the decade, Lennon embarked on a solo career that produced the critically acclaimed albums John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, and iconic songs such as "Give Peace a Chance" and "Imagine". The rain is falling down
Along with the sky
The colors and remembered suns
Are pouring by
What will I do with the sky
When it is empty?
Come to the window
Put your arms around me again
If you don't hold me
I will wash away with the rain
What will I do with my arms
When they are empty?
I'll just stand here and watch
The sky fall while you put yourself together
While you gather up the time it took to
Make us think we would last forever
The window fills your face
With silver and grain
You're soaking up the sky
I'll never see it again
What will I do with the sky
When it is empty?
What will I do with my life
