John Winston Ono Lennon, MBE (born John Winston Lennon; 9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was an English singer and songwriter who rose to worldwide fame as a co-founder of the band the Beatles, the most commercially successful band in the history of popular music. With fellow member Paul McCartney, he formed a celebrated songwriting partnership.
Born and raised in Liverpool, Lennon became involved in the skiffle craze as a teenager; his first band, the Quarrymen, evolved into the Beatles in 1960. When the group disbanded in 1970, Lennon embarked on a solo career that produced the critically acclaimed albums John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, and iconic songs such as "Give Peace a Chance", "Working Class Hero", and "Imagine". After his marriage to Yoko Ono in 1969, he changed his name to John Ono Lennon. Lennon disengaged himself from the music business in 1975 to raise his infant son Sean, but re-emerged with Ono in 1980 with the new album Double Fantasy. He was murdered three weeks after its release.
Happy 70th birthday john !! As soon as you're born they make you feel small By giving you no time instead of it all Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be They hurt you at home and they hit you at school They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years Then they expect you to pick a career When you can't really function you're so full of fear A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV And you t...

Mother, you had me but I never had you, I wanted you but you didn't want me, So I got to tell you, Goodbye, goodbye. Farther, you left me but I never left you, I needed you but you didn't need me, So I got to tell you, Goodbye, goodbye. Children, don't do what I have done, I couldn't walk and I tried to run, So I got to tell you, Goodbye, goodbye. Mama don't go, Daddy come home. Mama don't go, Daddy come home. 'God Save Oz' John Lennon/Elastic Oz Band.(Lennon) 1971 Written and recorded in support of the defence fund during Oz magazine's obscenity trial,God Save Oz was recorded by John and the Elastic Oz Band, and released as a single in July 1971. John recorded the song at Ascot Sound Studios, his home recording facility at Tittenhurst Park near Ascot in Berkshire. The musicians who had played on the John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band album were joined by members of the Oz team for God Save Oz and its b-side,Do The Oz. In the studio,John led a number of live performances, singing a guide vocal with each take.It was never his intention to sing on the final version,as he didn't want the song to be the official follow-up to the successful Power To The People. "Give Peace a Chance" is a 1969 single by (John Lennon's) Plastic Ono Band that became an anthem of the American anti-war movement at that time. A different song with the same name, written by Leon Russell and Bonny Bramlett, was sung by Joe Cocker. Writing and recording The song was written during Lennon's Bed-In honeymoon: when asked by a reporter what he was trying to achieve by staying in bed, Lennon answered spontaneously "All we are saying is give peace a chance"; Lennon liked the phrase and set it to music for the song.[citation needed]. He sang the song several times during the Bed-In, and finally, on 1 June 1969, in Room 1742 at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, recorded it using a simple setup of four microphones and a four-track tape recorder rented from a local re...

An outtake recorded during the John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band album, Long Lost John was a cover version of Lonnie Donegan's 1956 single Lost John. At the end of "I'm Losing You" John can be heard singing "Long Lost John" Lost John was a traditional folk song popularised by Donegan. He recorded it on 20 February 1956 with Dick Bishop, Chris Barber and Ron Bowden, along with its b-side, Stewball. Lost John was Donegan's third single, and reached number two in the UK charts. It became a staple of skiffle groups in the 1950s, and Lennon would likely have performed it with the Quarrymen in Liverpool. He also led The Beatles through a version of it during the January 1969 sessions for Let It Be.

"The Day John Lennon Died" (documentary 2010) is a look at Lennon and his death through archival footage and interviews. Someone once said to me when politicians are assassinated it's one thing, but "when they start killing the artists," it's a bad sign. John Lennon's loss was certainly devastating, and I'm not sure it could have been avoided. Perhaps it might have been delayed, though. He was a man who loved New York, loved walking down the street. He didn't have bodyguards, and he signed autographs outside of the Dakota. Part of the problem is that the security people at the Dakota apparently let people "hang out" there -- a mistake -- and another is that Lennon didn't always enter or leave the Dakota by driving directly in or out of the garage. So as the completely obsessed Mark Davi...

Possibly the last television interview with John Lennon
From The Old Grey Whistle Test, April 18, 1975.
On the occasion of his 75th birthday, we dug up some rare John Lennon archival footage. The black and white 16mm spans an interview from the 1966 Beatles US Tour, Lennon's 1969 trip to India with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, and the famous bed-in that he and Yoko Ono held on their honeymoon in Amsterdam in 1969. ↓ Read the MESSAGE FROM YOKO ONO ↓ Dear Friends, In 1969, John and I were so naïve to think that doing the Bed-In would help change the world. Well, it might have. But at the time, we didn't know. It was good that we filmed it, though. The film is powerful now. What we said then could have been said now. In fact, there are things that we said then in the film, which may give some encouragement and inspiration to the activists of today. Good luck to us all. Let's remember WAR IS OVER If We Want It. It's up to us, and nobody else. John would have wanted to say that.

"The song was originally inspired by Yoko's book Grapefruit. In it are a lot of pieces saying, Imagine this, imagine that. Yoko actually helped a lot with the lyrics, but I wasn't man enough to let her have credit for it. I was still selfish enough and unaware enough to sort of take her contribution without acknowledging it. I was still full of wanting my own space after being in a room with the guys all the time, having to share everything." Clips taken from the 1972 film 'Imagine' filmed mostly at their Tittenhurst Park home in Ascot, England, during 1971.
John wrote this song in 1976 with the working title "Everybody's Talkin', Nobody's Talkin'." He recorded the song at the sessions for his 1980 album Double Fantasy, but decided not to include it on the set, giving it to his Beatles bandmate Ringo instead. Ringo was going to record the song for his 1981 album Stop And Smell The Roses, but after John died in December 1980, he didn't fell comfortable recording it. John's recording finally surfaced in 1984 when it was released as a single and included on Milk And Honey, an album comprised of songs recorded during the Double Fantasy sessions that didn't make the cut. It was a big posthumous hit, reaching the Top 10 in both the US and UK.
