Originally to be called "Oldies But Mouldies", recording started last quarter 1973 with Phil Spector in the producing chair. But, John and Phil constantly "disagreed" over the product, and the sessions fell apart. At this time Phil had the tapes, was then involved in a car accident and John was unable to get the tapes back from Phil. When eventually he did get them back, he decided that only four of the takes were acceptable, and decided to re-record the others. This was done just after the release of "Walls And Bridges" from 21st-25th October 1974, and so it was decided to hold back the release of the oldies album until April 1975.
The next part of the interesting history of the release of this L.P. concerns "Come Together" ... Maurice Levy was the publisher of Chuck Berry's song catalogue and sued John for copyright infringement, claiming that "Come Together" was a plagiarised version of Chuck's "You Can't Catch Me". John agreed, out of court, to recompense by including some Chuck Berry songs for his next album, including the aforementioned problem tune. John gave Levy tapes from those first Spector sessions of the Chuck Berry songs, and Levy created an album which he advertised on U.S. T.V. and released 8th February 1975. This album was called "John Lennon Sings The Great Rock & Roll Hits", and was sub-titled "Roots" (it's more familiar name). It even added two tracks omitted from the official version, "Angel Baby" and "Be My Baby" (see The Bootleg Single)
The release stated that it was authorised by John Lennon and Apple Records, which was hotly denied by both, who then counter sued ! ... the "Roots" album was withdrawn and John was awarded $145,000 on 20th February 1976. But, it was the "Roots" release that caused Apple to bring forward the "Rock 'n' Roll" issue date.
"Angel Baby" eventually surfaced legitamately on "Menlove Avenue".
Three other tracks from the original sessions also appeared on "Menlove Avenue", these were "My Baby Left Me", "To Know Her Is To Love Her" and "Here We Go Again".
Also recorded but remaining unreleased were, "That'll Be The Day", "Thirty Days" and C'mon Everybody"
The album is single sleeved, with no added gimmicks like in more recent releases.

Rosie & the Originals are one of the best-remembered one-shot artists of the early rock era, getting to number five with their 1960 single "Angel Baby." A slow, simple, and primitively recorded and executed doo wop-shaded ballad, it was distinguished from countless other records of the sort by 15-year-old Rosie Hamlin's unnaturally high, thin voice, which got higher-than-high on the periodic wordless "ooh, ooh-oohs" that served as the record's primary hooks.
The single's gotten more notoriety than might be expected considering that the group never had another Top 40 hit. John Lennon cited Rosie as one of his favorite singers in a 1969 interview in Life magazine, and recorded the song in the mid-'70s for his Rock 'n' Roll oldies collection, although that track wasn't issued until the mid-'80s. In an essay in -Rock Almanac, Mark Sten even described the song as "generating a robot mantra devoid of embellishment or variation, the perfect underpinning for Rosie's piercing, disembodied-siren vocal. With 'Angel Baby,' rock had regressed as far as it could, some nameless dread loosed within the collective Top 40 mind had run its course and spent itself in a lost mournful wail. 'Angel Baby' was the final moonlit flowering of rock's medieval phase, paean to a purity and innocence on longer possible in the real world."
The band certainly had no thoughts of inviting such intellectual commentary when they formed in San Diego in 1960. Unable to find a recording studio in San Diego, they cut "Angel Baby" in a barn-like building in the farming town of San Marcos, with a radically different B-side, "Give Me Love," with a vocal by Bluford D. Wade. The group had trouble interesting Los Angeles labels in the song (a Hamlin original) until they convinced a department store manager in San Diego to play it. This attracted attention from kids in the store and a record distributor that happened to be there at the time. Through him they got the single "Angel Baby" released on Highland, and at the end of 1960 it shot up the national charts.
Although Rosie & the Originals recorded a few more tracks, they broke up almost immediately after "Angel Baby" made the charts, in a dispute over the terms of a recording contract they were considering signing. In 1961, Jackie Wilson's manager, Nat Tarnopol, got Rosie a contract with Wilson's label, Brunswick. Brunswick did put out a follow-up single, "Lonely Blue Nights," which made number 66, as well as an album and another single, billing the artist solely as Rosie for all the releases. In the meantime Highland put out a couple of Rosie & the Originals 45s with tracks to which they had the rights.
"Angel Baby," however, was one of those accidents of timing and unique material that couldn't be repeated, and none of Rosie's subsequent recordings - which, like "Angel Baby," were usually simple pop/rock ballads with a doo wop feel - could recapture the magic. Hamlin did make another single for the Globe label before leaving the music business to raise a family with her husband, Noah Tafolla, who had been leader and lead guitarist of the Originals. She did some tracks with producer Doug Salma in 1969 in a more updated doo wop/girl-group style that remained unreleased until 1999, when the Ace compilation The Best of Rosie & the Originals was issued. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

John Winston Ono Lennon, MBE (born John Winston Lennon; 9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was an English singer and songwriter who rose to worldwide fame as a co-founder of the band the Beatles, the most commercially successful band in the history of popular music. With fellow member Paul McCartney, he formed a celebrated songwriting partnership.
Born and raised in Liverpool, Lennon became involved in the skiffle craze as a teenager; his first band, the Quarrymen, evolved into the Beatles in 1960. When the group disbanded in 1970, Lennon embarked on a solo career that produced the critically acclaimed albums John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, and iconic songs such as "Give Peace a Chance", "Working Class Hero", and "Imagine". After his marriage to Yoko Ono in 1969, he changed his name to John Ono Lennon. Lennon disengaged himself from the music business in 1975 to raise his infant son Sean, but re-emerged with Ono in 1980 with the new album Double Fantasy. He was murdered three weeks after its release.

Baby John
Baby John (1917 – 27 January 2008) was a senior leader of the Kerala Revolutionary Socialist Party (Baby John). Previously, he was General Secretary of the Revolutionary Socialist Party in India. He was known in the Kerala state political circles as ‘Kerala Kissinger’ for his abilities to manage political crises at times when the state was passing through difficult political phases.
Legislative career
John's legislative career began in the early 1950s, when he was elected to the Travancore-Cochin Assembly. After the formation of Kerala state, he was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly from 1960 to 1996, mostly from his home constituency Chavara. He had served as minister; handling different portfolios in coalition governments led by the C. Achutha Menon, K. Karunakaran, A. K. Antony, P. K. Vasudevan Nair, and E. K. Nayanar.
Family
His elder son, Shaji Baby John, is the Chairman and Managing Director of Kings Group. His younger son, Shibu Baby John, is the present Minister for Labour in the government of Kerala.

Infant
An infant (from the Latin word infans, meaning "unable to speak" or "speechless") is the very young offspring of a human or animal. In an essay in -Rock Almanac, Mark Sten even described the song as "generating a robot mantra devoid of embellishment or variation, the perfect underpinning for Rosie's piercing, disembodied-siren vocal. With 'Angel Baby,' rock had regressed as far as it could, some nameless dread loosed within the collective Top 40 mind had run its course and spent itself in a lost mournful wail. 'Angel Baby' was the final moonlit flowering of rock's medieval phase, paean to a purity and innocence on longer possible in the real world." The band certainly had no thoughts of inviting such intellectual commentary when they formed in San Diego in 1960. Unable to find a recording studio in San Diego, they cut "Angel Baby" in a barn-like building in the farming town of San Marcos, with a radically different B-side, "Give Me Love," with a vocal by Bluford D. Wade. The group had trouble interesting Los Angeles labels in the song (a Hamlin original) until they convinced a department store manager in San Diego to play it. This attracted attention from kids in the store and a record distributor that happened to be there at the time. Through him they got the single "Angel Baby" released on Highland, and at the end of 1960 it shot up the national charts. Although Rosie & the Originals recorded a few more tracks, they broke up almost immediately after "Angel Baby" made the charts, in a dispute over the terms of a recording contract they were considering signing. In 1961, Jackie Wilson's manager, Nat Tarnopol, got Rosie a contract with Wilson's label, Brunswick. Brunswick did put out a follow-up single, "Lonely Blue Nights," which made number 66, as well as an album and another single, billing the artist solely as Rosie for all the releases. In the meantime Highland put out a couple of Rosie & the Originals 45s with tracks to which they had the rights. "Angel Baby," however, was one of those accidents of timing and unique material that couldn't be repeated, and none of Rosie's subsequent recordings - which, like "Angel Baby," were usually simple pop/rock ballads with a doo wop feel - could recapture the magic. Hamlin did make another single for the Globe label before leaving the music business to raise a family with her husband, Noah Tafolla, who had been leader and lead guitarist of the Originals. This album was called "John Lennon Sings The Great Rock & Roll Hits", and was sub-titled "Roots" (it's more familiar name). It even added two tracks omitted from the official version, "Angel Baby" and "Be My Baby" (see The Bootleg Single) The release stated that it was authorised by John Lennon and Apple Records, which was hotly denied by both, who then counter sued ! ... the "Roots" album was withdrawn and John was awarded $145,000 on 20th February 1976. But, it was the "Roots" release that caused Apple to bring forward the "Rock 'n' Roll" issue date. "Angel Baby" eventually surfaced legitamately on "Menlove Avenue". Three other tracks from the original sessions also appeared on "Menlove Avenue", these were "My Baby Left Me", "To Know Her Is To Love Her" and "Here We Go Again". Also recorded but remaining unreleased were, "That'll Be The Day", "Thirty Days" and C'mon Everybody" The album is single sleeved, with no added gimmicks like in more recent releases. John Lennon cited Rosie as one of his favorite singers in a 1969 interview in Life magazine, and recorded the song in the mid-'70s for his Rock 'n' Roll oldies collection, although that track wasn't issued until the mid-'80s. In an essay in -Rock Almanac, Mark Sten even described the song as "generating a robot mantra devoid of embellishment or variation, the perfect underpinning for Rosie's piercing, disembodied-siren vocal. With 'Angel Baby,' rock had regressed as far as it could, some nameless dread loosed within the collective Top 40 mind had run its course and spent itself in a lost mournful wail. 'Angel Baby' was the final moonlit flowering of rock's medieval phase, paean to a purity and innocence on longer possible in the real world."
The band certainly had no thoughts of inviting such intellectual commentary when they formed in San Diego in 1960. Unable to find a recording studio in San Diego, they cut "Angel Baby" in a barn-like building in the farming town of San Marcos, with a radically different B-side, "Give Me Love," with a vocal by Bluford D. Wade. The group had trouble interesting Los Angeles labels in the song (a Hamlin original) until they convinced a department store manager in San Diego to play it. This attracted attention from kids in the store and a record distributor that happened to be there at the time. Through him they got the single "Angel Baby" released on Highland, and at the end of 1960 it shot up the national charts.
Although Rosie & the Originals recorded a few more tracks, they broke up almost immediately after "Angel Baby" made the charts, in a dispute over the terms of a recording contract they were considering signing. In 1961, Jackie Wilson's manager, Nat Tarnopol, got Rosie a contract with Wilson's label, Brunswick. Brunswick did put out a follow-up single, "Lonely Blue Nights," which made number 66, as well as an album and another single, billing the artist solely as Rosie for all the releases. In the meantime Highland put out a couple of Rosie & the Originals 45s with tracks to which they had the rights.

But, John and Phil constantly "disagreed" over the product, and the sessions fell apart. At this time Phil had the tapes, was then involved in a car accident and John was unable to get the tapes back from Phil. When eventually he did get them back, he decided that only four of the takes were acceptable, and decided to re-record the others. This was done just after the release of "Walls And Bridges" from 21st-25th October 1974, and so it was decided to hold back the release of the oldies album until April 1975.
The next part of the interesting history of the release of this L.P. concerns "Come Together" ... Maurice Levy was the publisher of Chuck Berry's song catalogue and sued John for copyright infringement, claiming that "Come Together" was a plagiarised version of Chuck's "You Can't Catch Me". John agreed, out of court, to recompense by including some Chuck Berry songs for his next album, including the aforementioned problem tune. John gave Levy tapes from those first Spector sessions of the Chuck Berry songs, and Levy created an album which he advertised on U.S. T.V. and released 8th February 1975. This album was called "John Lennon Sings The Great Rock & Roll Hits", and was sub-titled "Roots" (it's more familiar name). It even added two tracks omitted from the official version, "Angel Baby" and "Be My Baby" (see The Bootleg Single)
The release stated that it was authorised by John Lennon and Apple Records, which was hotly denied by both, who then counter sued ! ... the "Roots" album was withdrawn and John was awarded $145,000 on 20th February 1976. But, it was the "Roots" release that caused Apple to bring forward the "Rock 'n' Roll" issue date.
"Angel Baby" eventually surfaced legitamately on "Menlove Avenue".
Three other tracks from the original sessions also appeared on "Menlove Avenue", these were "My Baby Left Me", "To Know Her Is To Love Her" and "Here We Go Again".
Also recorded but remaining unreleased were, "That'll Be The Day", "Thirty Days" and C'mon Everybody"
The album is single sleeved, with no added gimmicks like in more recent releases.

Nearly 5 Years ago I visited Paris for two days and made this film. It is a very special place and I could see and sense the challenges it faced but equally admired the diversity of it's population and freedom it allowed it’s’ people to express. Lennon Remembered' was a half-hour television tribute to John Lennon, produced by CNN and broadcast on Superstation TBS in 1981 on the first anniversary of his murder. The documentary was produced, written and directed by David Guilbault. (Digitized from an old VHS copy).

On December 8th in 1980, when John Lennon was murdered, I was producing a two-hour live show on CNN, called "Take Two". We, of course, devoted the entire program that day to the news of his killing, his life and his music.
A year later, for the anniversary of his death, I was tasked to produce a half-hour tribute that aired on WTBS. My budget was zero, so I literally had to beg or borrow every piece of footage I could get my hands on and put the show together quickly. Still, it was a labor of love. With what I had, I tried to tell a story using just John's words.
The program, "Lennon Remembered", was raw, as these were pre-digital days, with linear, not non-linear editing, and the source tapes I used were of poor quality.
To this day, I miss the man and his music.
So, bless you John Lennon and thanks for all the grooves. There has never been anyone better.

Then a most bizarre thing happened, some of the recordings of Lennon on YouTube were suddenly posted or re-posted containing altered audio tracks that were slightly lowered in frequency from the original 528Hz frequency recording. This video was among those re-uploaded containing a slightly lower frequency recording.

Até aquele 15 de agosto de 1965, estádios ou estruturas semelhantes jamais haviam sediado um show musical, e pelas mais diversas razões. Os problemas com a sonorização soam básicos e óbvios. Mas havia outros tantos, o principal talvez era que o grupo, orquestra ou artista haveria de ser muito famoso para justificar a aparente megalomania de uma performance em espaço tão grande quanto incomum. Os Beatles seriam esse grupo? Em 1965 é provável que não existisse ninguém mais famoso na face da terra. Longe do torrão natal os Fabs toparam o maior dos desafios até então, aceitando uma produção tocada em parceria pela NEMS Enterprises, de Brian Epstein, e a Sullivan Productions, do apresentador Ed Sullivan. O evento claro, contou com todos os requintes de mídia disponíveis à época. A disposição de todos era fazer um evento grandioso, profissionalmente filmado, e que seria transformado posteriormente em especial de TV nos Estados Unidos e na Inglaterra.
A intenção para o show no Shea Stadium era que os Beatles descessem com um helicóptero bem no meio do estádio e que dali fossem correndo para o palco. Mas essa ideia foi abortada por não terem conseguido autorização, pois seria uma manobra perigosa demais de se realizar. O que aconteceu foi que eles pousaram com o helicóptero há uma certa distância do estádio e, após isso, foram levados até o mesmo em um furgão blindado da empresa Wells Fargo (os distintivos que eles usavam nas roupas, durante o concerto, eram dessa empresa).
Quando o apresentador Ed Sullivan subiu ao palco e usou os microfones para proferir essa frase histórica “Now, ladies and gentlemen… honored by their country, condecorated by their queen and loved here in America, here they are: The Beatles!”, a platéia teve certeza que os Fabs de fato iriam se apresentar ali. Antes, a produção americana obrigou a platéia a agüentar por quase uma hora, um festival impressionante de artistas sem grande expressividade alguma como o grupo Sounds Incorporated, Cannibal & Headhunters, Brenda Holloway e King Curtis Band. Após a apresentação de Sullivan, já trajados com os “terninhos militares”, com os distintivos da Wells Fargo, os Beatles subiram as escadas que davam acesso ao gramado do estádio e correram até o palco, ouvindo 55.600 fãs gritando descontroladamente.
Imagens tiradas no show mostram muitos adolescentes e mulheres chorando, gritando, e até mesmo desmaios. O barulho da multidão era tal que os seguranças podiam ser vistos tapar os ouvidos quando os Beatles entraram em campo. Apesar da presença de forte esquema de segurança alguns fãs conseguiram entrar em campo várias vezes durante o show e foram perseguidos e contidos. O filme também mostra John Lennon irônico apontando um incidente desses enquanto ele tentava conversar com o público entre as músicas. O nível de ruído ensurdecedor da multidão juntamente com a distância entre a banda e o público significava que ninguém no estádio podia ouvir muita coisa. A Vox tinha especialmente projetado amplificadores de 100 watts para este show e ele ainda não estava alto o suficiente, de modo que os Beatles usaram o sistema de amplificação da casa.
Haviam alguns famosos asistindo a esse lendário concerto dos Beatles. Mick Jagger, Keith Richards e Andrew Loog Oldhan, empresário dos Rolling Stones, assistiam tudo de um lugar situado atrás da saída do estádio, de frente para a primeira base. Segundo consta, Mick Jagger ficou surpreso com a reação do público com os Fab Four. Quem também estava no concerto, era a futura-atriz Meryl Streep, que tinha 16 anos na época, e estaava com um “button” escrito “I Love You, Paul”.
Os Beatles voltaram ao estádio no dia 23 de agosto do ano seguinte, porém, dessa vez, tocando para um público menor, de 44.000 pessoas. Seis dias depois (29/08/1966), eles realizariam seu último concerto de turnê, no Candlestick Park, em São Francisco. Em 2009, Paul voltou ao Shea Stadium – que agora se chama Citi Field e está um pouco ao lado de onde era localizado o estádio antigo, demolido em 2008.

Formed in 2006 in Hamilton, ON, the band recorded and released their debut EP “Deadlines” in 2007. The six songs bring the listener rock as it should be; catchy, raw and unbridled. Arkells have succeeded in blending traditional blues hooks mixed with rock heavy riffs, and a hint of soul on the side. From the strum of the first chord, the music ignites into a fury of addictive and muscular cadence, taking hold of the listener in all the right ways.
The five piece band is made up of Tim Oxford on drums, Dan Griffin on keys, Mike DeAngelis on guitar, Nick Dika on bass and Max Kerman on guitar and vocals (though all members layer their voices on most songs). In their music are threads of The Police, Springsteen and The Band, woven with a few newer rock influences such as Joel Plaskett and The National, tied together with subtle strands of classics rhythms from the Motown era. These influences create a musical textile that is rich with melodic vocals and energetic rhythms fit to get any crowd singing along and throwing their hands in the air.
Since the release of “Deadlines” the band has traveled around Ontario to share the stage with Tokyo Police Club, Matt Mays & El Torpedo, Cuff the Duke, and Alexisonfire, only recently with increased touring have they traded in their Greyhound and Go bus passes for a stylish mini van. But they ain’t going to fear the New Year. No, they are taking it head on. Signed to Dine Alone Records at the beginning of 2008 (home to City and Colour, Attack in Black, Bedouin Soundclash), the band has booked shows with Ladyhawk and Danko Jones. They are set to re-release Deadlines in 2008 through Dine Alone. Until then, their music is best showcased live, so be sure to get to a show, keep your ear to the ground and add the album to your birthday list.

I thought I'd relax and catch a weekend in Paris with my family, just a few photos and videos for the album. When I got there I just couldn't resist. I found myself live on national TV as a roller blader 'Taig Khris' jumped off the Eiffel Tower in midst of thousands of people, chased by a gangster as he and his friends played one of those gambling games on the street, interrogated by the friendly and professional police outside the Arc de Triomphe and had to show them my photos, promptly let go with a smile of course. So much to see and do, Paris is one historical, great and magnificent city of contrasts. You can download this now:)

"The Day John Lennon Died" (documentary 2010) is a look at Lennon and his death through archival footage and interviews. Someone once said to me when politicians are assassinated it's one thing, but "when they start killing the artists," it's a bad sign. John Lennon's loss was certainly devastating, and I'm not sure it could have been avoided. Perhaps it might have been delayed, though. He was a man who loved New York, loved walking down the street. He didn't have bodyguards, and he signed autographs outside of the Dakota. Part of the problem is that the security people at the Dakota apparently let people "hang out" there -- a mistake -- and another is that Lennon didn't always enter or leave the Dakota by driving directly in or out of the garage. He didn't have bodyguards, and he signed autographs outside of the Dakota. Part of the problem is that the security people at the Dakota apparently let people "hang out" there -- a mistake -- and another is that Lennon didn't always enter or leave the Dakota by driving directly in or out of the garage.
So as the completely obsessed Mark David Chapman stood across the street and watched the apartment building, no one noticed and no one told him to leave. He eventually moved closer. And shot John Lennon.
A cautionary tale in one way, a heartbreaking tale in another.

James Braithwaite - I Met the Walrus
In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan, armed with a reel-to-reel tape deck, snuck into John Lennon’s hotel room in Toronto and convinced John to do an interview. Fastforward to present day and using the original interview recording as the soundtrack, director Josh Raskin has woven a visual narrative which tenderly romances Lennon’s every word. Raskin marries traditional pen sketches by James Braithwaite. James Braithwaite is an illustrator, animator, and director based out of Montreal Canada. James’s first animation, “I Met the Walrus” won best short animation from the American Film Institute, and was nominated for an Academy Award in 2008. The film has since been nominated for an Emmy, and has won two awards at the Banff Television Awards.

1969 was the year that John & Yoko intensified their long running campaign for World Peace. They approached the task with the same entrepreneurial expertise as an advertising agency selling a brand of soap powder to the masses. John & Yoko's product however was PEACE, not soft soap, and they were determined to use any slogan, event and gimmick in order to persuade the World to buy it.

Fastforward to present day and using the original interview recording as the soundtrack, director Josh Raskin has woven a visual narrative which tenderly romances Lennon’s every word. Raskin marries traditional pen sketches by James Braithwaite.
James Braithwaite is an illustrator, animator, and director based out of Montreal Canada. James’s first animation, “I Met the Walrus” won best short animation from the American Film Institute, and was nominated for an Academy Award in 2008. Rosie & the Originals are one of the best-remembered one-shot artists of the early rock era, getting to number five with their 1960 single "Angel Baby." A slow, simple, and primitively recorded and executed doo wop-shaded ballad, it was distinguished from countless other records of the sort by 15-year-old Rosie Hamlin's unnaturally high, thin voice, which got higher-than-high on the periodic wordless "ooh, ooh-oohs" that served as the record's primary hooks. The single's gotten more notoriety than might be expected considering that the group never had another Top 40 hit. But, John and Phil constantly "disagreed" over the product, and the sessions fell apart. At this time Phil had the tapes, was then involved in a car accident and John was unable to get the tapes back from Phil. When eventually he did get them back, he decided that only four of the takes were acceptable, and decided to re-record the others. This was done just after the release of "Walls And Bridges" from 21st-25th October 1974, and so it was decided to hold back the release of the oldies album until April 1975.
The next part of the interesting history of the release of this L.P. concerns "Come Together" ... Maurice Levy was the publisher of Chuck Berry's song catalogue and sued John for copyright infringement, claiming that "Come Together" was a plagiarised version of Chuck's "You Can't Catch Me". John agreed, out of court, to recompense by including some Chuck Berry songs for his next album, including the aforementioned problem tune. John gave Levy tapes from those first Spector sessions of the Chuck Berry songs, and Levy created an album which he advertised on U.S. T.V. and released 8th February 1975. This album was called "John Lennon Sings The Great Rock & Roll Hits", and was sub-titled "Roots" (it's more familiar name). It even added two tracks omitted from the official version, "Angel Baby" and "Be My Baby" (see The Bootleg Single)
The release stated that it was authorised by John Lennon and Apple Records, which was hotly denied by both, who then counter sued ! ... the "Roots" album was withdrawn and John was awarded $145,000 on 20th February 1976. But, it was the "Roots" release that caused Apple to bring forward the "Rock 'n' Roll" issue date.
"Angel Baby" eventually surfaced legitamately on "Menlove Avenue".
Three other tracks from the original sessions also appeared on "Menlove Avenue", these were "My Baby Left Me", "To Know Her Is To Love Her" and "Here We Go Again".
Also recorded but remaining unreleased were, "That'll Be The Day", "Thirty Days" and C'mon Everybody"
The album is single sleeved, with no added gimmicks like in more recent releases.
The cover photograph of John was taken by Jurgen Vollmer in 1961 in Hamburg. The blurred figures are George and Paul, plus EITHER Pete Best OR Stuart Sutcliffe. The format of this cover was designed by Ray Kohara.

John Lennon cited Rosie as one of his favorite singers in a 1969 interview in Life magazine, and recorded the song in the mid-'70s for his Rock 'n' Roll oldies collection, although that track wasn't issued until the mid-'80s. In an essay in -Rock Almanac, Mark Sten even described the song as "generating a robot mantra devoid of embellishment or variation, the perfect underpinning for Rosie's piercing, disembodied-siren vocal. With 'Angel Baby,' rock had regressed as far as it could, some nameless dread loosed within the collective Top 40 mind had run its course and spent itself in a lost mournful wail. 'Angel Baby' was the final moonlit flowering of rock's medieval phase, paean to a purity and innocence on longer possible in the real world."
The band certainly had no thoughts of inviting such intellectual commentary when they formed in San Diego in 1960. Unable to find a recording studio in San Diego, they cut "Angel Baby" in a barn-like building in the farming town of San Marcos, with a radically different B-side, "Give Me Love," with a vocal by Bluford D. Wade. The group had trouble interesting Los Angeles labels in the song (a Hamlin original) until they convinced a department store manager in San Diego to play it. This attracted attention from kids in the store and a record distributor that happened to be there at the time. Through him they got the single "Angel Baby" released on Highland, and at the end of 1960 it shot up the national charts.
Although Rosie & the Originals recorded a few more tracks, they broke up almost immediately after "Angel Baby" made the charts, in a dispute over the terms of a recording contract they were considering signing. In 1961, Jackie Wilson's manager, Nat Tarnopol, got Rosie a contract with Wilson's label, Brunswick. Brunswick did put out a follow-up single, "Lonely Blue Nights," which made number 66, as well as an album and another single, billing the artist solely as Rosie for all the releases. In the meantime Highland put out a couple of Rosie & the Originals 45s with tracks to which they had the rights.
"Angel Baby," however, was one of those accidents of timing and unique material that couldn't be repeated, and none of Rosie's subsequent recordings - which, like "Angel Baby," were usually simple pop/rock ballads with a doo wop feel - could recapture the magic. Hamlin did make another single for the Globe label before leaving the music business to raise a family with her husband, Noah Tafolla, who had been leader and lead guitarist of the Originals. She did some tracks with producer Doug Salma in 1969 in a more updated doo wop/girl-group style that remained unreleased until 1999, when the Ace compilation The Best of Rosie & the Originals was issued. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

Wade. The group had trouble interesting Los Angeles labels in the song (a Hamlin original) until they convinced a department store manager in San Diego to play it. This attracted attention from kids in the store and a record distributor that happened to be there at the time. Through him they got the single "Angel Baby" released on Highland, and at the end of 1960 it shot up the national charts.
Although Rosie & the Originals recorded a few more tracks, they broke up almost immediately after "Angel Baby" made the charts, in a dispute over the terms of a recording contract they were considering signing. In 1961, Jackie Wilson's manager, Nat Tarnopol, got Rosie a contract with Wilson's label, Brunswick. Brunswick did put out a follow-up single, "Lonely Blue Nights," which made number 66, as well as an album and another single, billing the artist solely as Rosie for all the releases. In the meantime Highland put out a couple of Rosie & the Originals 45s with tracks to which they had the rights.
"Angel Baby," however, was one of those accidents of timing and unique material that couldn't be repeated, and none of Rosie's subsequent recordings - which, like "Angel Baby," were usually simple pop/rock ballads with a doo wop feel - could recapture the magic. Hamlin did make another single for the Globe label before leaving the music business to raise a family with her husband, Noah Tafolla, who had been leader and lead guitarist of the Originals. She did some tracks with producer Doug Salma in 1969 in a more updated doo wop/girl-group style that remained unreleased until 1999, when the Ace compilation The Best of Rosie & the Originals was issued. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

This album was called "John Lennon Sings The Great Rock & Roll Hits", and was sub-titled "Roots" (it's more familiar name). It even added two tracks omitted from the official version, "Angel Baby" and "Be My Baby" (see The Bootleg Single)
The release stated that it was authorised by John Lennon and Apple Records, which was hotly denied by both, who then counter sued ! ... the "Roots" album was withdrawn and John was awarded $145,000 on 20th February 1976.
