New Orleans (/nuː ˈɔːrlɪnz/,/nuː ˈɔːrliənz/, /nuː ɔːrˈliːnz/, or /ˈnɔːrlənz/; French: La Nouvelle-Orléans [la nuvɛlɔʁleɑ̃]) is a major United States port and the largest city and the center of the metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana. The population of the city was 343,829 as of the 2010 U.S. Census. The New Orleans metropolitan area (New Orleans–Metairie–Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area) had a population of 1,167,764 in 2010 and was the 46th largest in the United States. The New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Combined Statistical Area, a larger trading area, had a 2010 population of 1,452,502.
The city is named after the Duke of Orleans, who reigned as Regent for Louis XV from 1715 to 1723, as it was established by French colonists and strongly influenced by their European culture. It is well known for its distinct French and Spanish Creole architecture, as well as its cross-cultural and multilingual heritage. New Orleans is also famous for its cuisine, music (particularly as the birthplace of jazz), and its annual celebrations and festivals, most notably Mardi Gras, dating to French colonial times. The city is often referred to as the "most unique" in the United States.
The New Orleans Rhythm Kings (nicknamed NORK) were one of the most influential jazz bands of the early to mid-1920s. The band was a combination of New Orleans and Chicago musicians who helped shape Chicago Jazz and influenced many younger jazz musicians.
The New Orleans Rhythm Kings in its earliest stages was the brainchild of drummer Mike "Ragbaby" Stevens, solely in that he sent the first telegram to Albert Brunies about going to Chicago to make a band and find better gigs than New Orleans had to offer. Albert "Abbie" Brunies and his younger brother and trombonist George Brunies were initially hesitant but suggested the idea to friend, trumpet player Paul Mares, who immediately lunged for the opportunity.
"So I says Paul, I says, Abbie don't want to go to Chicago and I'm kind of leery, I'm afraid", George recalled. "Paul says, 'man, give me that wire. I'll go.' So Paul went up [to Chicago] and introduced himself to Ragbaby Stevens and Ragbaby liked him… and Paul got the railroad fare from his father and sent me $60".
David Grisman (born March 23, 1945, in Hackensack, New Jersey) is an American bluegrass/newgrass mandolinist and composer of acoustic music. In the early 1990s, he started the Acoustic Disc record label to help spread acoustic and instrumental music.
Grisman grew up in a Conservative Jewish household in Hackensack, New Jersey. He started his musical career in 1963, as a member of Even Dozen Jug Band. His nickname "Dawg" was affectionately assigned by his close friend Jerry Garcia in 1973 (the two met in 1964 at a Bill Monroe show at Sunset Park in West Grove, Pennsylvania). "Dawg Music" is what he calls his mixture of bluegrass and Django Reinhardt/Stéphane Grappelli-influenced jazz, as highlighted on his album Hot Dawg (recorded Oct. 1978, released 1979). Stephane Grappelli played on a couple of tracks on Hot Dawg, and then the 1981 recording Stephane Grappelli and David Grisman Live. It was Grisman's combination of Reinhardt-era Jazz, bluegrass, folk, Old World Mediterranean string band music, as well as modern Jazz fusion that came to embody "Dawg" music.
Joseph Nathan Oliver (December 19, 1881 – April 10, 1938) better known as King Oliver or Joe Oliver, was an American jazz cornet player and bandleader. He was particularly recognized for his playing style and his pioneering use of mutes in jazz. Also a notable composer, he wrote many tunes still played today including "Dippermouth Blues", "Sweet Like This", "Canal Street Blues", and "Doctor Jazz". He was the mentor and teacher of Louis Armstrong. His influence was such that Armstrong claimed, "if it had not been for Joe Oliver, Jazz would not be what it is today."
Joseph Nathan Oliver was born in Aben, Louisiana, near Donaldsonville in Ascension Parish, and moved to New Orleans in his youth. He first studied the trombone, then changed to cornet. From 1908 to 1917 Oliver played cornet in New Orleans brass bands and dance bands, and also in the city's red-light district (which came to be known as "Storyville"). A band he co-led with trombonist Kid Ory was considered to be New Orleans' hottest and best in the late 1910s. Oliver achieved great popularity in New Orleans across economic and racial lines, and was in demand for music jobs from rough working-class black dance halls to white society debutante parties.

Here is the second released Semper-Odeon Disc Record (A joint project between sound engineers Colin Hancock of the Semper Phonograph Company and Jorni Budich of the Odeon Talking Machine Works). Recorded by Colin Hancock at the Semper Studios Buda, Tx and transferred acoustically by Jorni Budich in Washington D.C. The tune was originally written by Louis Armstrong and Preston Jackson while Armstrong was a member of King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band, but the band never waxed it. Now, for the first time since 1924, listeners have a chance to hear what the band may have sounded like had they waxed the tune. Colin Hancock plays each instrument trying to recreate the style of the King Oliver band as it would have sounded like in the Gennett or Okeh studios in 1923. The same instrumental lineup...

PLEASE WATCH IN HD For the Third released Semper-Odeon Record (Record number OSVA 001-2), Jorge and I have again taken on the challenge of recording a tune that a band (in this case the famous New Orleans Rhythm Kings) allegedly recorded but was never released, only this time the tune is quite well known, the standard "Sensation", which makes it all the more difficult to understand just how that band would have played it, as there as so many different interpretations! On August the 29th, 1922 the Friars Society Orchestra (later named the New Orleans Rhythm Kings) entered to Gennett Studios in Richmond, Indiana to cut their first records. The date would be forever remembered as one of the first true "jazz" recording sessions, with improvised solos and a complete change in direction from ...

Exclusive interview with Bill Wyman: "I'm as proud of the Rhythm Kings as I was of the Stones." BILL WYMAN has found success in many fields since leaving the Rolling Stones, writing nine books, staging exhibitions of his photography and running his famous ‘Sticky Fingers’ restaurant in London. He has also a deep interest in archaeology and can often be found unearthing Roman antiquities on his Suffolk estate. However, Bill’s first love remains music and he returns to Dunfermline next month with his star-packed Rhythm Kings alongside fellow legends, Albert Lee on guitar and jazz/blues singer Georgie Fame. The gig on 20th November at the Alhambra - where they enthralled fans in 2009 - is the only Scottish date on their 26-stop UK tour. “You’ve been specially chosen,” Bill laughed when he sp...
