In a recent post we mentioned our favorite wacko Christian web site, Biblical Gender Roles, and their mind-boggling article, “Christian Husbands — you don’t pay for the milk when you own the cow!“ Well, they’re back with another jewel: “How a husband can enjoy sex that is grudgingly given by his wife,” which states “men should not tolerate refusal.” While that post is funny in a very dark way, it’s so sick that we don’t want to give it further thought, and will instead refer you to a good short piece on Raw Story.
While we’re on the topic of religion, The Guardian had a story last week succinctly titled, “Religious children are meaner than their secular counterparts.” The story reports on a scientific study published in Current Biology, “The Negative Association between Religiousness and Children’s Altruism across the World,” which concerns secular, Christian, and Muslim children. Given both Christianity’s and Islam’s “chosen people,” us-versus-the-heathens foundation, the finding that religious children are meaner than nonreligious children is hardly surprising. We’d bet the farm that a study of secular, Mormon, and Hindu children would come to similar findings.
One of the standard lines from big pharma and its apologists is that price gouging by the pharmaceutical companies is necessary if they’re to develop new drugs. That’s complete bullshit, of course. They spend more on marketing than they do on new drug development. With more than two million Americans coming down with antibiotic resistant infections every year (including yours truly this summer–pro tip: never buy marked-down fish), and 23,000 dying annually, many have wondered why there have been almost no new antibiotics on the market for decades. Wonder no more. Motherboard provides enlightenment with its article, “Why New Antibiotics Never Come to Market.”
Tucson musician Chuck Maultsby, of Chuckwagon and the Wheels, has a new song, “The Ballad of the USS Liberty,” about the Israeli attack on the U.S. naval surveillance ship USS Liberty that resulted in the deaths of 34 American sailors. The bitter irony is that two years after using the manufactured Gulf of Tonkin incident as justification for massive escalation of the disastrous Vietnam War, LBJ ordered the cover up of the Liberty incident, an actual, deliberate attack on a U.S. naval vessel.
Government dishonesty? Shocking, I know.
Finally, The Guardian has a good report on police killings in the U.S. Among other things, The Guardian reports that “U.S. police kill more in days than other countries do in years,” that on a per capita basis U.S. police kill over twice as many unarmed black people as unarmed white people, and that so far this year U.S. police have killed a thousand people.
