Amtrak Empire Builder arriving Eastbound at 2:32AM in Fargo North Dakota. On Oct. 14 2015. I was headed back to college! A cool tidbit the new Baggage car on the Empire Builder looks really sharp. I am happy to see new equipment and at the same time sad to see the old baggage cars go. Oh well that is economics for you. Lastly Enjoy!
I recorded both "Empire Builders" in Fargo, North Dakota early one foggy Sunday morning. #8 was running late so #7 arrived first followed by #8 about 20 minutes later. #7 had AMTK 113 and 117 for power, and #8 had AMTK 196 and I believe AMTK 13.

Scanner audio was recorded using a scanner hooked up to a voice recorder set to go off only upon the transmittance of sound. Select portions of the recording were dubbed into the video during post-processing.

This week's video is a real treat, and one I know lots of you have been waiting a very long time for. I have lots of subscribers who came to my channel through other train trip videos I've done - and you've been patient. Hopefully, this 30 minute bumper trip report (the longest I've ever done) will quench your appetite for epic train journeys.
This is a quintessentially American experience and is the ONLY way you should consider going across Big Sky Country - if you have three days to spare, that is.

And here's a great description of the route from Wikipedia: The train passes through Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. It makes service stops in Spokane, Washington, Havre, Montana, Minot, North Dakota, and Saint Paul, Minnesota. Its other major stops include Vancouver, Washington, Whitefish, Montana, Fargo, North Dakota, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It uses BNSF Railway's northern route from Seattle to Minneapolis, Minnesota Commercial from Minneapolis to St. Paul, Canadian Pacific from St. Paul to Glenview, and Metra from Glenview to Chicago.
From Seattle, the northern segment uses the Cascade Tunnel and Stevens Pass as it traverses the Cascade Range to reach Spokane, while the southern segment departs Portland and runs along the north side of the Columbia River Gorge. The eastbound cars merge into one train at Spokane. The train continues into the mountains in eastern Washington and northern Idaho. Amtrak organizes the schedule so the train will pass through the Rocky Mountains (and Glacier National Park) during daylight, but this is more likely on the eastbound train during summer. Passengers can see sweeping views as the train skirts the southern edge of the park, crossing the Continental Divide at Marias Pass.
After three short stops near Glacier National Park— Whitefish, Montana, West Glacier, Essex (a flag stop), and either East Glacier in the summer or Browning in the winter, the train enters the Northern Plains of eastern Montana and North Dakota. The land changes from prairie to forest as it travels through Minnesota. From Saint Paul Union Depot, the train crosses the Mississippi River at Hastings, Minnesotaand passes through southeastern Minnesota cities on or near Lake Pepin before crossing the Mississippi again at La Crosse, Wisconsin. It passes through rural southern Wisconsin, turns south at Milwaukee, and ends at Chicago Union Station.

Empire Builder
The Empire Builder is a passenger train operated by Amtrak in the Midwestern and Northwestern United States. It is Amtrak's busiest long-distance route, carrying more than 500,000 passengers a year in 2007–2010. Before Amtrak, the Empire Builder was the flagship train of the Great Northern Railway. The current route runs from Chicago, Illinois, to the Pacific Northwest. The line splits in Spokane, Washington, terminating at Seattle, Washington's King Street Station (2,206 miles (3,550 km) from Chicago) in the north and Portland, Oregon's Union Station (2,257 miles (3,632 km) from Chicago) in the south.

Amtrak
The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, doing business as Amtrak /ˈæmtræk/, is a partially government-funded American passenger railroad service. It is operated and managed as a for-profit corporation, and provides medium- and long-distance intercity service in the contiguous United States. Amtrak was founded in 1971 through the government-sponsored consolidation of most of the preexisting passenger rail companies in the United States.

North Dakota
North Dakota (pronunciation: 
i/ˌnɔːrθ dəˈkoʊtə/; locally [ˌno̞ɹθ dəˈko̞ɾə]) is the 39th state of the United States, having been admitted to the union on November 2, 1889.
It is located in the Upper Midwestern region of the United States, bordered by the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba to the north, the states of Minnesota to the east, South Dakota to the south, and Montana to the west. The state capital is Bismarck, and the largest city is Fargo. North Dakota is the 19th most extensive but the 4th least populous and the 4th least densely populated of the 50 United States.
North Dakota has weathered the Great Recession of the early 21st century with a boom in natural resources, particularly a boom in oil extraction from the Bakken formation, which lies beneath the northwestern part of the state. The development has driven strong job and population growth, and low unemployment.
Geography
North Dakota is located in the U.S. region known as the Great Plains. The state shares the Red River of the North with Minnesota on the east; South Dakota is to the south, Montana is to the west, and the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba are north. North Dakota is situated near the middle of North America with a stone marker in Rugby, North Dakota marking the "Geographic Center of the North American Continent". With an area of 70,762 square miles (183,273 km2), North Dakota is the 19th largest state.

Amtrak train #6 leaves the station in Ottumwa, Iowa as it continues heading eastward to Chicago on August 31, 2015. This passenger train is leaving on the left track to pass a couple slower eastbound BNSF freight trains ahead on the right track. The first car on today's "California Zephyr" is the heritage baggage car AMTK 1752. Amtrak is currently in the process of replacing all of their heritage baggage cars, so they don't have a lot of time left on this route. This one was built by the Budd Company in 1954 as the coach SP 2372 for the Southern Pacific Railroad. Amtrak later converted it to a baggage car: http://www.trainweb.org/amtrakpix/locoshots/baggage/1752A.html. Bringing up the end of #6 are three private varnishes all from Iowa Pacific Holdings. The first and third are the sleeping cars "Chebanse" and "Baton Rouge." Both are in the Illinois Central-inspired paint scheme for Iowa Pacific's Pullman Rail Journeys: http://www.travelpullman.com/. In between them is the full-length dome car "Prairie View" which is painted in the "Empire Builder" livery as when it was run by the Great Northern Railway. Amtrak with Three Private Cars Departs Ottumwa Depot
Amtrak train #6 leaves the station in Ottumwa, Iowa as it continues heading eastward to Chicago on August 31, 2015. This passenger train is leaving on the left track to pass a couple slower eastbound BNSF freight trains ahead on the right track. The first car on today's "California Zephyr" is the heritage baggage car AMTK 1752. Amtrak is currently in the process of replacing all of their heritage baggage cars, so they don't have a lot of time left on this route. This one was built by the Budd Company in 1954 as the coach SP 2372 for the Southern Pacific Railroad. Hopefully, this 30 minute bumper trip report (the longest I've ever done) will quench your appetite for epic train journeys.
This is a quintessentially American experience and is the ONLY way you should consider going across Big Sky Country - if you have three days to spare, that is.
The Amtrak Empire Builder. Where to start? Well, here's the official route guide: https://www.amtrak.com/ccurl/229/381/Amtrak-Empire-Builder-Train-Route-Guide,0.pdf
And here's a great description of the route from Wikipedia: The train passes through Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. It makes service stops in Spokane, Washington, Havre, Montana, Minot, North Dakota, and Saint Paul, Minnesota. Its other major stops include Vancouver, Washington, Whitefish, Montana, Fargo, North Dakota, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It uses BNSF Railway's northern route from Seattle to Minneapolis, Minnesota Commercial from Minneapolis to St. Paul, Canadian Pacific from St. Paul to Glenview, and Metra from Glenview to Chicago.
From Seattle, the northern segment uses the Cascade Tunnel and Stevens Pass as it traverses the Cascade Range to reach Spokane, while the southern segment departs Portland and runs along the north side of the Columbia River Gorge. The eastbound cars merge into one train at Spokane. The train continues into the mountains in eastern Washington and northern Idaho. Amtrak organizes the schedule so the train will pass through the Rocky Mountains (and Glacier National Park) during daylight, but this is more likely on the eastbound train during summer. Passengers can see sweeping views as the train skirts the southern edge of the park, crossing the Continental Divide at Marias Pass.
After three short stops near Glacier National Park— Whitefish, Montana, West Glacier, Essex (a flag stop), and either East Glacier in the summer or Browning in the winter, the train enters the Northern Plains of eastern Montana and North Dakota. The land changes from prairie to forest as it travels through Minnesota. From Saint Paul Union Depot, the train crosses the Mississippi River at Hastings, Minnesotaand passes through southeastern Minnesota cities on or near Lake Pepin before crossing the Mississippi again at La Crosse, Wisconsin. It passes through rural southern Wisconsin, turns south at Milwaukee, and ends at Chicago Union Station.

I have lots of subscribers who came to my channel through other train trip videos I've done - and you've been patient. Hopefully, this 30 minute bumper trip report (the longest I've ever done) will quench your appetite for epic train journeys.
This is a quintessentially American experience and is the ONLY way you should consider going across Big Sky Country - if you have three days to spare, that is.
The Amtrak Empire Builder. Where to start? Well, here's the official route guide: https://www.amtrak.com/ccurl/229/381/Amtrak-Empire-Builder-Train-Route-Guide,0.pdf
And here's a great description of the route from Wikipedia: The train passes through Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. It makes service stops in Spokane, Washington, Havre, Montana, Minot, North Dakota, and Saint Paul, Minnesota. Its other major stops include Vancouver, Washington, Whitefish, Montana, Fargo, North Dakota, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It uses BNSF Railway's northern route from Seattle to Minneapolis, Minnesota Commercial from Minneapolis to St. Paul, Canadian Pacific from St. Paul to Glenview, and Metra from Glenview to Chicago.
From Seattle, the northern segment uses the Cascade Tunnel and Stevens Pass as it traverses the Cascade Range to reach Spokane, while the southern segment departs Portland and runs along the north side of the Columbia River Gorge. The eastbound cars merge into one train at Spokane. The train continues into the mountains in eastern Washington and northern Idaho. Amtrak organizes the schedule so the train will pass through the Rocky Mountains (and Glacier National Park) during daylight, but this is more likely on the eastbound train during summer. Passengers can see sweeping views as the train skirts the southern edge of the park, crossing the Continental Divide at Marias Pass.
After three short stops near Glacier National Park— Whitefish, Montana, West Glacier, Essex (a flag stop), and either East Glacier in the summer or Browning in the winter, the train enters the Northern Plains of eastern Montana and North Dakota. The land changes from prairie to forest as it travels through Minnesota. From Saint Paul Union Depot, the train crosses the Mississippi River at Hastings, Minnesotaand passes through southeastern Minnesota cities on or near Lake Pepin before crossing the Mississippi again at La Crosse, Wisconsin. It passes through rural southern Wisconsin, turns south at Milwaukee, and ends at Chicago Union Station.

Amtrak BN SOO activity in Minot North Dakota 1992
This is a long video but has lots of train action. We start out with the Amtrak Empire Builder arriving westbound at the old GN Depot in Minot, North Dakota. As you listen to the chatter you will find that Amtrak wants to cut out the rear unit of three and leave in Minot. But Amtrak does not have the units in the correct order which causes lots of confusion in which one to set out. Next you will see a short eastbound BN intermodal train go by as it crosses the SOO Tower diamond. Finally the Amtrak train is backed up to go thru the process of removing the rear unit and leave on a siding east of the depot. CSX Railfanning At Former Amtrak Ocala Union Station
I know the video is long!! But I caught a bunch of cool stuff including a csx local switching the Ocala yard and Florida Central crossing the S line. I did over 6 hrs worth of railfanning caught 8 freight trains and condensed it all into only a 1 hour video using sony memories and windows movie maker for video editing. I put a lot of hard work into this and edited parts of it so video wouldn't be 6 hrs long!! So hope u enjoy the video!! This is a quintessentially American experience and is the ONLY way you should consider going across Big Sky Country - if you have three days to spare, that is.
The Amtrak Empire Builder. Where to start? Well, here's the official route guide: https://www.amtrak.com/ccurl/229/381/Amtrak-Empire-Builder-Train-Route-Guide,0.pdf
And here's a great description of the route from Wikipedia: The train passes through Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. It makes service stops in Spokane, Washington, Havre, Montana, Minot, North Dakota, and Saint Paul, Minnesota. Its other major stops include Vancouver, Washington, Whitefish, Montana, Fargo, North Dakota, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It uses BNSF Railway's northern route from Seattle to Minneapolis, Minnesota Commercial from Minneapolis to St. Paul, Canadian Pacific from St. Paul to Glenview, and Metra from Glenview to Chicago.
From Seattle, the northern segment uses the Cascade Tunnel and Stevens Pass as it traverses the Cascade Range to reach Spokane, while the southern segment departs Portland and runs along the north side of the Columbia River Gorge. The eastbound cars merge into one train at Spokane. The train continues into the mountains in eastern Washington and northern Idaho. Amtrak organizes the schedule so the train will pass through the Rocky Mountains (and Glacier National Park) during daylight, but this is more likely on the eastbound train during summer. Passengers can see sweeping views as the train skirts the southern edge of the park, crossing the Continental Divide at Marias Pass.
After three short stops near Glacier National Park— Whitefish, Montana, West Glacier, Essex (a flag stop), and either East Glacier in the summer or Browning in the winter, the train enters the Northern Plains of eastern Montana and North Dakota. The land changes from prairie to forest as it travels through Minnesota. From Saint Paul Union Depot, the train crosses the Mississippi River at Hastings, Minnesotaand passes through southeastern Minnesota cities on or near Lake Pepin before crossing the Mississippi again at La Crosse, Wisconsin. It passes through rural southern Wisconsin, turns south at Milwaukee, and ends at Chicago Union Station.

As the westbound intermodal leaves a eastbound (south) SOO train crosses the diamond on it's way to Harvey. As this train passes you will see the SOO transfer waiting its turn to cross the diamond and then back down the same track as the SOO train had just gone.
This all happened in about an hours time.

This is a long video but has lots of train action. We start out with the Amtrak Empire Builder arriving westbound at the old GN Depot in Minot, North Dakota. As you listen to the chatter you will find that Amtrak wants to cut out the rear unit of three and leave in Minot. But Amtrak does not have the units in the correct order which causes lots of confusion in which one to set out.
Next you will see a short eastbound BN intermodal train go by as it crosses the SOO Tower diamond. Finally the Amtrak train is backed up to go thru the process of removing the rear unit and leave on a siding east of the depot.
While this process is going on the SOO transfer train has arrived in front of the new BN crew change building and is waiting to cross over the SOO diamond and then back to the southeast on SOO tracks to it's yard in southeast Minot.
As the Amtrak Empire Builder starts to leave a BN westbound intermodal arrives to switch crews and leave right away. They will follow Amtrak out of town.

I know the video is long!! But I caught a bunch of cool stuff including a csx local switching the Ocala yard and Florida Central crossing the S line. I did over 6 hrs worth of railfanning caught 8 freight trains and condensed it all into only a 1 hour video using sony memories and windows movie maker for video editing. I put a lot of hard work into this and edited parts of it so video wouldn't be 6 hrs long!! So hope u enjoy the video!! Next video project will be my trip to Melbourne FL for the NMRA convention up there.
