Ebola Crisis in West Africa

The Ebola epidemic in West Africa has caused the deaths of thousands, and untold suffering for many, many more. But the enormous loss of life is only one part of the story. Ebola also devastates people’s lives without ever infecting them: children go without education because schools have to close, people lose their jobs because it is not safe to visit market places, and hospitals receive more patients than they can handle. Ebola has added even more cracks to an already fragile region.

However, the heroic efforts of the people and governments of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, are stopping the disease in its tracks. With help from UNDP and other UN partners, the three most-affected countries are now close to stopping Ebola’s spread, and beginning essential recovery work. Schools are reopening, market places are starting to fill up again, and people are rebuilding their lives. Want to know more?
See what UNDP is doing in West Africa.

Governments and leaders from all over the world are stepping up to support this important recovery work. In July 2015 they will come together with the Governments of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, at a conference hosted by the Secretary-General of the United Nations. You can help us start spreading the word today, to make sure the July conference will be a resounding success. With your support, we can get West Africa on the track to recovery.
