How to apply for advertised positions

To apply for an advertised vacancy, you will need to register your name and passowrd at our careers website.  This can be done by selecting the Current Vacancies link to view our advertised opportunities.  Please remember to retain your password.

Before applying for an advertised position at the Parliament of Victoria, please ensure that you read the position description. This document outlines key duties and includes the key selection criteria for the advertised position. This information will assist you in deciding if your skills and abilities match the requirements of the job. If you have any queries regarding the role or the position, please direct them to the contact person as specified in the advertisement or listed on the position description.

If you wish to apply for an advertised position, please submit the following documents:

  • A covering letter
  • A statement addressing how your skills, experience and knowledge meet each of the key selection criteria
  • A current resume
  • Names and contact details of a least two referees. If possible include a current manager/supervisor.

If you wish to apply for multiple jobs please ensure that you submit a separate application for each job.

About our organisation

The Parliament of Victoria through its elected representatives is accountable to the Victorian Community for the provision and conduct of representative government in the interests of Victorians.

The objectives of all the Departments of the Parliament is to deliver apolitical, professional and innovative services to support our elected representatives and the Parliament as an institution.

The Parliament is divided into three distinct departments and as a Parliamentary Officer you will be employed in one of these three departments:

  • Department of the Legislative Assembly, headed by the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly provides administrative and research support for the Lower House.
  • Department of the Legislative Council, headed by the Clerk of the Legislative Council, provides equivalent support for the Upper House.
  • The Department of Parliamentary Services provides quality apolitical services to Members of Parliament, Electorate Officers, Parliamentary Officers and members of the public. The Department is divided into three areas: Information Services, Resource Management and Precinct and Property Management.

Terms of employment and benefits

All new employees are subject to an initial probationary period of up to three months. This may be subject to a further extension to a maximum period of 6 months.

Eligibility to apply

Candidates who do not have Australian residential status must have an appropriate Australian work visa.

Recruitment Process

All recruitment and selection processes will maintain the principle of competition on merit and ensure the application of fair, reasonable and consistent standards of selection, based on key selection criteria. The process of shortlisting applicants for interview will be undertaken after the closing date for the receipt of applications. This involves assessing your written application (resume (CV) and your responses to the key selection criteria as outlined in the position description. Those candidates that are assessed as best meeting the key selection criteria will be invited to attend a formal panel interview.

The Interview Process

Applicants who are shortlisted will be invited to participate in a panel interview process. A panel will generally be comprised of at least three people and the interview will take between 45 minutes and an hour. All applicants will be asked a series of questions that will draw out the candidates capacity to undertake the duties of the position and meet the key selection criteria. If your application reaches preferred candidate status, a member of the selection panel will also conduct referee checks.

Keeping you informed

You will be notified of the outcome of your application. If selected, a job offer will be made to you and a formal letter of offer will be issued as soon as possible after the recommendation has been approved. If unsuccessful, you will be notified via email to your nominated email address.

The Parliament of Victoria treats personal information as confidential. Your personal information will not be disclosed unless the law permits it or your permission is given. All received applications are retained for a period of six months. At the end of this period, received applications are securely disposed of.
