She Said She Said was recorded when The Beatles realised they were one song short for the Revolver album. In a hectic nine hour session, during which the majority of the album's mono and stereo mixes were also done, they rehearsed the song more than 25 times and then recorded three takes of the rhythm track.
It was inspired by an LSD-influenced conversation between John Lennon and actor Peter Fonda.
"It's an interesting track. The guitars are great on it. That was written after an acid trip in LA during a break in The Beatles' tour where we were having fun with The Byrds and lots of girls. Some from Playboy, I believe. Peter Fonda came in when we were on acid and he kept coming up to me and sitting next to me and whispering, 'I know what it's like to be dead."

"Give Peace a Chance" is a 1969 single by (John Lennon's) Plastic Ono Band that became an anthem of the American anti-war movement at that time.
A different song with the same name, written by Leon Russell and Bonny Bramlett, was sung by Joe Cocker.
Writing and recording
The song was written during Lennon's Bed-In honeymoon: when asked by a reporter what he was trying to achieve by staying in bed, Lennon answered spontaneously "All we are saying is give peace a chance"; Lennon liked the phrase and set it to music for the song.[citation needed]. He sang the song several times during the Bed-In, and finally, on 1 June 1969, in Room 1742 at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, recorded it using a simple setup of four microphones and a four-track tape recorder rented from a local recording studio.[1] The recording session was attended by dozens of journalists and various celebrities, including Timothy Leary, Rabbi Abraham Feinberg, Joseph Schwartz, Allan Rock, Rosemary Woodruff Leary, Petula Clark, Dick Gregory, Allen Ginsberg, Murray the K, Al Capp and Derek Taylor, many of whom are mentioned in the lyrics. Lennon played acoustic guitar and was joined by Tommy Smothers of the Smothers Brothers, also on acoustic guitar.
The song was credited to Lennon/McCartney (John Lennon and Paul McCartney) and published by Northern Songs (now Sony/ATV Music Publishing). On some later releases of the song, only Lennon is credited; viz. the 1990s reissue of the 1972 album Live in New York City, the 2006 documentary The U.S. vs. John Lennon (in which the song appears), and the 1997 compilation album Lennon Legend: The Very Best of John Lennon (and its DVD version six years later). Lennon later stated his regrets about being guilty enough to give McCartney credit as co-writer on my first independent single instead of giving it to Yoko, who had actually written it with me. [2] However, it has also been suggested that the credit was a way of thanks to McCartney for helping him record "The Ballad of John and Yoko" at short notice.[3]
Commercial release
The "Give Peace a Chance" single (with Yoko Ono's "Remember Love" as the B-side) was released on 45 RPM vinyl in the UK (on APPLE 13) on July 4, 1969 and July 7, 1969 in the US (on Apple 1809). The track's first full-length album appearance was on the Lennon hits compilation The John Lennon Collection issued November 1, 1982 in the UK (EMI/Parlophone Records) and November 8, 1982 (originally on Geffen Records, since re-released on Capitol Records). A significantly truncated version of the Montreal session and a snippet of the One to One Benefit concert performance of the song appear on Lennon's Shaved Fish hits compilation from 1975. "Give Peace a Chance" was the first "solo" single released by a member of the Beatles while the band was still intact, though, technically, the artist was credited as Plastic Ono Band, not John Lennon.
Popularity
The song reached number 14 on the pop charts in the United States and was kept out of the top slot in the UK by The Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Women".
The song quickly became the anthem of the anti-war movement, and was sung by half a million demonstrators in Washington, D.C. at the Vietnam Moratorium Day, on 15 October 1969.[4] They were led by the renowned folk singer Pete Seeger, who interspersed phrases like, "Are you listening, Nixon?" and "Are you listening, Agnew?", between the choruses of protesters singing, "All we are saying ... is give peace a chance".[5]

The original last verse of the song refers to: "John and Yoko, Timmy Leary, Rosemary, Tommy Smothers, Bobby Dylan, Tommy Cooper, Derek Taylor, Norman Mailer, Allen Ginsberg, Hare Krishna".
In the performance of "Give Peace a Chance" included on the Live Peace in Toronto 1969 album, Lennon openly stated that he couldn't remember all of the words and improvised with the names of the band members sharing the stage with him and anything that came to mind: "John and Yoko, Eric Clapton, Klaus Voormann, Penny Lane, Roosevelt, Nixon, Tommy Jones and Tommy Cooper, and somebody."
The third verse contains a reference to masturbation, but Lennon changed this to "mastication" on the official lyric sheet. He later admitted this was a "cop out" but wanted to avoid unnecessary controversy.[6]

When The Beatles began recording what would become their third single to be released in 1967, its working title was ‘Hello, Hello’. The single sat at No.1 in both the UK and America for the first three weeks of 1968.
Paul directed the promotional film for ‘Hello, Goodbye’, remarking later: “Directing a film is something that everyone always wants to get into. It was something I’d always been interested in, until I actually tried it. ... There was so much of that going on – so many decisions to be made – that I ended up hating it.”

He Said
He Said was the name used by Wire member Graham Lewis for his solo record releases in the 1980s.
Background
The first He Said album titled Hail was released by Mute Records in October 1986. It was produced by Graham Lewis and John Fyer and recorded at Blackwing Studios in London. Collaborators on the album included fellow Wire member Bruce Gilbert and musician Brian Eno, who played a Yamaha DX7 synthesiser on the track I Fall into Your Arms. Two singles were released from the initial album, including Pump and Only One I. The CD release included the September single release, Pulling 3g's / Pale Feet.
In July 1988 Mute released the single Could You, again produced by Lewis and Fryer. This single was included on the last He Said album titled Take Care which was released by Mute the following year.

John Winston Ono Lennon, MBE (born John Winston Lennon; 9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was an English singer and songwriter who rose to worldwide fame as a co-founder of the band the Beatles, the most commercially successful band in the history of popular music. "She Said" is the second single from British musician Plan B's second album The Defamation of Strickland Banks — a concept album whose songs tell the fictitious tale of a sharp-suited British soul singer who finds fame with bitter-sweet love songs, but then loses everything when he ends up in prison for a crime he didn't commit. The single was released as a digital download and on CD single on 24 February 2010. "She Said" was the sixteenth best selling British single of 2010.
Background
"She Said" began to receive increasing amounts of radio airplay throughout February and March 2010. BBC Radio 1 in particular was supportive of the track up until its release. Plan B performed the single on 12 March 2010 edition of Friday Night with Jonathan Ross. He also performed on Conan on 19 April 2011. The song was also featured in the start of the pilot episode of Whitney.
Music video
The music video for "She Said" was directed by Daniel Wolfe and shows the soul singer Strickland Banks, played by Plan B, in court following the events of the "Stay Too Long" video. The video also stars actress Vicky McClure as Strickland Banks' girlfriend and Kaya Scodelario as the female lead.

"She Said She Said" is a song written by John Lennon (credited to Lennon–McCartney) and released by the Beatles on their 1966 album Revolver. Lennon described it as "an 'acidy' song" with lyrics inspired by actor Peter Fonda's comments during an LSD trip in 1965 with members of the Beatles and the Byrds.
Background and inspiration
In late August 1965, Brian Epstein had rented a house at 2850 Benedict Canyon Drive in Beverly Hills, California for the Beatles' six-day respite from their US tour. The large Spanish-style house was tucked into the side of a mountain. Soon their address became widely known and the area was besieged by fans, who blocked roads and tried to scale the steep canyon while others rented helicopters to spy from overhead. The police department detailed a tactical squad of officers to protect the band and the house. The Beatles found it impossible to leave and instead invited guests, including actors Eleanor Bron (who co-starred with them in Help!), Peggy Lipton and folk singer Joan Baez. On 24 August, they hosted the Byrds and actor Peter Fonda and, all except Paul McCartney, took LSD.

A significantly truncated version of the Montreal session and a snippet of the One to One Benefit concert performance of the song appear on Lennon's Shaved Fish hits compilation from 1975. "Give Peace a Chance" was the first "solo" single released by a member of the Beatles while the band was still intact, though, technically, the artist was credited as Plastic Ono Band, not John Lennon.
Popularity
The song reached number 14 on the pop charts in the United States and was kept out of the top slot in the UK by The Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Women".
The song quickly became the anthem of the anti-war movement, and was sung by half a million demonstrators in Washington, D.C. at the Vietnam Moratorium Day, on 15 October 1969.[4] They were led by the renowned folk singer Pete Seeger, who interspersed phrases like, "Are you listening, Nixon?" and "Are you listening, Agnew?", between the choruses of protesters singing, "All we are saying ... is give peace a chance".[5]

The song chronicles the effort of Freddie Mercury continuing to perform despite approaching the end of his life; he was dying from complications due to HIV/AIDS, although his illness had not yet been made public in spite of ongoing media speculation claiming that he was seriously ill. Mercury was so ill when the band recorded the song in 1990, that May had concerns as to whether he was physically capable of singing it. Recalling Mercury's performance, May states; "I said, 'Fred, I don't know if this is going to be possible to sing.' And he went, 'I'll fucking do it, darling' — vodka down — and went in and killed it, completely lacerated that vocal." I recently sculpted Matt Damon for the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show (and for Matt's 40th birthday). Bruce Springsteen: 41 Years on Thunder Road
A music-video-supercut of Bruce Springsteen singing Thunder Road between 1975-2016 “Springsteen refuses to be a mercenary curator of his past. He continues to evolve as an artist, filling one spiral notebook after another with ideas.” -David Remnick, The New Yorker In this video, I wanted to explore how a song like Thunder Road has changed, not only in the way Springsteen performs it, but also how its meaning evolves with an older person singing as Rolling Stone said or Thunder Road, “the lyrics hint at a perspective beyond his years.” I also wanted to look the evolution of live recordings, both professional and homemade.

The song chronicles the effort of Freddie Mercury continuing to perform despite approaching the end of his life; he was dying from complications due to HIV/AIDS, although his illness had not yet been made public in spite of ongoing media speculation claiming that he was seriously ill. Mercury was so ill when the band recorded the song in 1990, that May had concerns as to whether he was physically capable of singing it. Recalling Mercury's performance, May states; "I said, 'Fred, I don't know if this is going to be possible to sing.' And he went, 'I'll fucking do it, darling' — vodka down — and went in and killed it, completely lacerated that vocal." The lyrics are full of allusions, metaphors and other figures of speech, making it somewhat difficult to understand. Thinly disguised tragedy ahead is announced. In the end, the text refers to the determination, the furious desire to live ("I have to find the will to carry on with the show") in spite of vanishing strength ("inside my heart is breaking").

I recently sculpted Matt Damon for the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show (and for Matt's 40th birthday).
For this piece, I tried to capture a look somewhere between all the expressions Matt can make with his VERY animated face. The result is a sculpture that sometimes looks like he's about to smile, sometimes smirking, sometimes irritated. The idea was to have the expression go with whatever was being said on the show. I like the piece- this is classical portraiture and the expression changes with the lighting.
I am offering workshops now! I am available for lectures/ visits.
Any celebrities out there who see this video and are interested in seeing themselves or their friends in sculpted form, I DO take commissions!
THE MATERIAL:
I sculpt exclusively in Cx5- a material I invented and will be making available for purchase this year. Cx5 handles like fine clay when warm and is hard as plastic when cool. My two favorite properties of the material are: First, it needs NO armature! (regardless of the size of the piece- it is TOTALLY self-supporting), and second, when it's cool, you can be as rough as you like with it without worrying about mushing up your details. In fact, I scrub my sculptures vigorously with dish soap and a toothbrush to keep them clean throughout the sculpting process- something you absolutely cannot do with ordinary clay. It is liberating to be able to hold a sculpture in your hand as it takes form instead of having it be stuck on an armature! (More on that in the next video...) Cx5 can be reused indefinitely and is completely non-toxic.

In Libeskind's space, sliced openings and recesses frame a series of views of artworks. "The domestic environment is no longer seen as some mechanical functionalistic machine to live in, in my view, and it is something that has stood with the global memory with where we are, where we are coming from and where we are going," he said.
The home of Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, this year's Pritzker Prize winner, was built around existing trees and features a series of elliptical windows and openings. Here, these shapes become projection screens displaying views of Tokyo.
"The problem with my house was that there were so many trees, and I didn’t want to cut any trees; that was the main problem. So we are living in between the trees," said Ban, explaining how the design first came about.
The space belonging to Italian architect Mario Bellini replicates the combined staircase and bookshelf that reveals the architect's love of reading, while David Chipperfield's installtion is dominated by a concrete wall that reflects the stark interior of his Berlin home.
Venetian blinds line one side of the installation for Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan, allowing light to filter gently into the space, contrasting with the spectrum of light and colour that patterns the walls of the room based on Zaha Hadid's London studio.
Antique warriors stand guard at the Paris home of Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas, and reappear here, while the final space is based on the reading room of Studio Mumbai principal Bijoy Jain.
Where Architects Live was curated by Francesca Molteni and Davide Pizzigoni, and can be found in Pavilion 9 at the Rho Milan Fairgrounds from 8 to 13 April. The exhibition also includes film interviews with each architect and scale models of all eight spaces featured.

"A house is not really private," said Daniel Libeskind at the exhibition launch. "I have no secrets, so all the secrets are shown and of course my house is not just about furniture and light."
In Libeskind's space, sliced openings and recesses frame a series of views of artworks. "The domestic environment is no longer seen as some mechanical functionalistic machine to live in, in my view, and it is something that has stood with the global memory with where we are, where we are coming from and where we are going," he said.
The home of Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, this year's Pritzker Prize winner, was built around existing trees and features a series of elliptical windows and openings. Here, these shapes become projection screens displaying views of Tokyo.
"The problem with my house was that there were so many trees, and I didn’t want to cut any trees; that was the main problem. So we are living in between the trees," said Ban, explaining how the design first came about.
The space belonging to Italian architect Mario Bellini replicates the combined staircase and bookshelf that reveals the architect's love of reading, while David Chipperfield's installtion is dominated by a concrete wall that reflects the stark interior of his Berlin home.
Venetian blinds line one side of the installation for Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan, allowing light to filter gently into the space, contrasting with the spectrum of light and colour that patterns the walls of the room based on Zaha Hadid's London studio.
Antique warriors stand guard at the Paris home of Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas, and reappear here, while the final space is based on the reading room of Studio Mumbai principal Bijoy Jain.
Where Architects Live was curated by Francesca Molteni and Davide Pizzigoni, and can be found in Pavilion 9 at the Rho Milan Fairgrounds from 8 to 13 April. The exhibition also includes film interviews with each architect and scale models of all eight spaces featured.

Since he took power, the Philippine president has overseen the killing of more than 3,500 people in his war on drugs, offended world leaders and strained relations with the US.
In an exclusive first interview since he was sworn in, we talk to Duterte about his controversial war on drugs and foreign policy - including deteriorating relations with the United States and potentially warming relations with China.
"We have three million drug addicts, and it's growing. So if we do not interdict this problem, the next generation will be having a serious problem ... You destroy my country, I'll kill you. And it's a legitimate thing. If you destroy our young children, I will kill you. That is a very correct statement. There is nothing wrong in trying to preserve the interest of the next generation."
But Duterte admits that children and innocent people have also been killed in the bloody crackdown, and promises to investigate these extrajudicial killings, but he also says calls them "collateral damage".
When asked about the contested South China Sea, Duterte says:
"We will not give up anything there; it's an entitlement ... You can only negotiate to prevent a war ... They invited me for talks, and I will go."

But Duterte admits that children and innocent people have also been killed in the bloody crackdown, and promises to investigate these extrajudicial killings, but he also says calls them "collateral damage".
When asked about the contested South China Sea, Duterte says:
"We will not give up anything there; it's an entitlement ... You can only negotiate to prevent a war ... They invited me for talks, and I will go."

Peter Zumthor was named as the recipient of the Royal Gold Medal for architecture 2012 and here's an interview Dezeen filmed with him in the summer of 2011, in which he told us "I'm a passionate architect and I think it's a beautiful profession."
Speaking at the opening of his Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in London, Zumthor said, "I do not work for money; I'm not going for commercial projects. I go for projects where I can put my heart into it and which I think are worthwhile."
He also told us how he started out in his father's cabinet-making workshop, went to art school and "slowly, slowly" became an architect. "Now maybe soon I’ll become a landscape architect too," he added. The pavilion featured a black walled garden framing a strip of wild planting by Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf.
Zumthor, who was also awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2009, will be presented with the Royal Gold Medal for architecture in a ceremony at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London on 6 February 2013.

Her eyes grow wide and she interrupts the Doctor "is that an actual Ashley 3000?" she asks. The Doctor confirms that it is and that it's their top selling model. The Dr. has the Robots present themselves to Kate.
First SadieBot steps forward and introduces herself. Then next CleoBot steps towards her and does the same. But then all of a sudden Cleobot grabs Kate's breasts and inquires how she may pleasure her. Dr. Winchester freezes Cleobot and apologizes to Kate. He said that she was just a prototype and still have much more testing to be done. Kate smiles "so it's true? You do create Sexbots here?" As the doctor stammers and tries to explain.
Ashley 3000 steps forward "hello Kate." They shake hands and stare into each others eyes. "This is the original Ashley 3000. Her algorithm processing clock has been changed but this the real Ashley 3000" Kate says. The doctor has a perplexed look on his face "How do you know that?" he said. Kate smiles and walks towards him.
She tells him how handsome he is and that she loves all the flashing lights on the computers. Doctor Winchester starts to suspect something. He asks her some very strange questions. Kate freezes and her eyes glow. She then twitches and stands at attention. Her replies are very robotic.
"Just as I thought, she's a robot!" the doctor exclaims. He commands her to open her c-panel. He inspects her inner workings only to find out she was created by Dr. Fires. Her objective is to find Ashley 3000 and bring her home. Well the doctor has other plans for her now. He is going to dismantle her and steal her cpu. Kate looks at Ashley 3000 " Your Master Wants You To Come Home." Ashley 3000 nods and Kate enters self destruct mode and begins the countdown.

But then all of a sudden Cleobot grabs Kate's breasts and inquires how she may pleasure her. Dr. Winchester freezes Cleobot and apologizes to Kate. He said that she was just a prototype and still have much more testing to be done. Kate smiles "so it's true? You do create Sexbots here?" As the doctor stammers and tries to explain.
Ashley 3000 steps forward "hello Kate." They shake hands and stare into each others eyes. "This is the original Ashley 3000. Her algorithm processing clock has been changed but this the real Ashley 3000" Kate says. The doctor has a perplexed look on his face "How do you know that?" he said. Kate smiles and walks towards him.
She tells him how handsome he is and that she loves all the flashing lights on the computers. Doctor Winchester starts to suspect something. He asks her some very strange questions. Kate freezes and her eyes glow. She then twitches and stands at attention. Her replies are very robotic.
"Just as I thought, she's a robot!" the doctor exclaims. He commands her to open her c-panel. He inspects her inner workings only to find out she was created by Dr. Fires. Her objective is to find Ashley 3000 and bring her home. Well the doctor has other plans for her now. He is going to dismantle her and steal her cpu. Kate looks at Ashley 3000 " Your Master Wants You To Come Home." Ashley 3000 nods and Kate enters self destruct mode and begins the countdown.

In this particular case, we’re going to break with all the protocols, because I know a lot of people that are in the audience, I’ve seen faces, I’ve seen people with reputations in the audience, and I think that all of us can say, unanimously that, Mary probably doesn’t really deeply understand how much impact her singing and her reputation has had in our lives, the way it’s shaped the love that we’ve got for the music. So, ladies and gentlemen, Mary Wilson of The Supremes, come on.

Stuart: So, where to start? Let’s start with a quick question. Mary, I wanted to -
Mary: Well, I need to explain something.
Stuart: Yes, my dear.
Mary: Okay, before we go any further. I’m not the founding - the only founding member of The Supremes, as most of you know. Florence, Diane and Betty McGlown, are the founding members of The Supremes, and I cannot take that credit all myself. So, the people here in the audience understand and know that, so, let’s make that very clear.
Stuart: Well, let’s start with the first question, I was watching you last night in the opening of the exhibition, singing, and sung a couple of songs for us, it was great, and one of the things that struck me is, actually, without any hesitation, I’d forgotten how great a solo singer you are, how great a singer you are. And I wonder if that actually, when we go back to The Supremes, there’s been criticisms in the past, for example, that Diana was actually the least good singer of The Supremes, she had a very specific voice. And I just wanted to get your thoughts about - just describe the different voices that were in The Supremes.
Mary: Well, I don’t think that you can - anyone said that Diane was the least good singer in The Supremes, that’s not true, and I’ve never ever said anything like that. My point was always to sort of bring forward the fact that Florence Ballard was a great singer, and I was also a good singer. So, I think people - and sometimes when we tried to explain or say things like that, people think that you’re saying that the other person is not that good. That was not my point, at all. My point was saying that Florence Ballad was a Gospel, strong singer, Diane was a pop singer and I was kind of, like, the ballad singer, so, we each had our own, you know, good points.
Stuart: And at a time, and in a city, which probably, without any hesitation, you could say was probably, at its time, the greatest musical city in the world, bar none. I mean, if you actually compare and contrast it with the other great regional city of the time, Liverpool, many of the Liverpool acts moved down to London and whatever, but there you were, in Detroit, touring the world, phenomenal place. Just to get some grasp on this, simply your high school alone, who did you go to school with?
Mary: Well, in Detroit, we all kind of grew up in the projects. Detroit was really a small - is, a small town. And Smokey Robinson, I guess, was in the same - lived in the neighbourhood as Diana Ross. I went to high school with some of The Miracles, which was Bobby Rogers. The person that did a lot of singing - or writing, with Smokey Robinson, was Al Gutierrez, Marvin Tarplin, and he and I went to high school together. Florence went to the same high school as some of The Temptations. So, we all came from pretty much the same neighbourhood, even though it was kind of large.
Stuart: And when did you first remember the sense that Mary Wilson had the desire to be a singer? Where did the desire come from?
Mary: Well, you know, people like Little Richard, you know, there was Jackie Wilson, there was Frankie Lyman and The Teenagers was one of my favourite ...
Stuart: He was a bad boy, though, wasn’t he?
Mary: He was a what?
Stuart: He was a bad boy.
Mary: I don’t know, I was too young.
Stuart: No, he was a very bad boy, Mary.
Mary: Well, you know, doctors don’t tell secrets on other doctors. But, we all kind of bad later on. But, yeah, you know, from just - oops, we don’t want to go there right now - but, anyway, when I was born, my mother said that when the doctors spanked me, I started singing. So, I mean, I did that, but I never ever thought that it was different, I thought that everybody woke up in the morning singing. You know, I thought that everyone did that. I didn’t realise, until I became one of the members of The Primettes, that that was something very special. Then I realised that that talent was special, but, prior to that, I would just, you know, woke up and start singing, " ooooooo," you know, whatever, and just ...

In this particular case, we’re going to break with all the protocols, because I know a lot of people that are in the audience, I’ve seen faces, I’ve seen people with reputations in the audience, and I think that all of us can say, unanimously that, Mary probably doesn’t really deeply understand how much impact her singing and her reputation has had in our lives, the way it’s shaped the love that we’ve got for the music. So, ladies and gentlemen, Mary Wilson of The Supremes, come on.

Stuart: So, where to start? Let’s start with a quick question. Mary, I wanted to -
Mary: Well, I need to explain something.
Stuart: Yes, my dear.
Mary: Okay, before we go any further. I’m not the founding - the only founding member of The Supremes, as most of you know. Florence, Diane and Betty McGlown, are the founding members of The Supremes, and I cannot take that credit all myself. So, the people here in the audience understand and know that, so, let’s make that very clear.
Stuart: Well, let’s start with the first question, I was watching you last night in the opening of the exhibition, singing, and sung a couple of songs for us, it was great, and one of the things that struck me is, actually, without any hesitation, I’d forgotten how great a solo singer you are, how great a singer you are. And I wonder if that actually, when we go back to The Supremes, there’s been criticisms in the past, for example, that Diana was actually the least good singer of The Supremes, she had a very specific voice. And I just wanted to get your thoughts about - just describe the different voices that were in The Supremes.
Mary: Well, I don’t think that you can - anyone said that Diane was the least good singer in The Supremes, that’s not true, and I’ve never ever said anything like that. My point was always to sort of bring forward the fact that Florence Ballard was a great singer, and I was also a good singer. So, I think people - and sometimes when we tried to explain or say things like that, people think that you’re saying that the other person is not that good. That was not my point, at all. My point was saying that Florence Ballad was a Gospel, strong singer, Diane was a pop singer and I was kind of, like, the ballad singer, so, we each had our own, you know, good points.
Stuart: And at a time, and in a city, which probably, without any hesitation, you could say was probably, at its time, the greatest musical city in the world, bar none. I mean, if you actually compare and contrast it with the other great regional city of the time, Liverpool, many of the Liverpool acts moved down to London and whatever, but there you were, in Detroit, touring the world, phenomenal place. Just to get some grasp on this, simply your high school alone, who did you go to school with?
Mary: Well, in Detroit, we all kind of grew up in the projects. Detroit was really a small - is, a small town. And Smokey Robinson, I guess, was in the same - lived in the neighbourhood as Diana Ross. I went to high school with some of The Miracles, which was Bobby Rogers. The person that did a lot of singing - or writing, with Smokey Robinson, was Al Gutierrez, Marvin Tarplin, and he and I went to high school together. Florence went to the same high school as some of The Temptations. So, we all came from pretty much the same neighbourhood, even though it was kind of large.
Stuart: And when did you first remember the sense that Mary Wilson had the desire to be a singer? Where did the desire come from?
Mary: Well, you know, people like Little Richard, you know, there was Jackie Wilson, there was Frankie Lyman and The Teenagers was one of my favourite ...
Stuart: He was a bad boy, though, wasn’t he?
Mary: He was a what?
Stuart: He was a bad boy.
Mary: I don’t know, I was too young.
Stuart: No, he was a very bad boy, Mary.
Mary: Well, you know, doctors don’t tell secrets on other doctors. But, we all kind of bad later on. But, yeah, you know, from just - oops, we don’t want to go there right now - but, anyway, when I was born, my mother said that when the doctors spanked me, I started singing. So, I mean, I did that, but I never ever thought that it was different, I thought that everybody woke up in the morning singing. You know, I thought that everyone did that. I didn’t realise, until I became one of the members of The Primettes, that that was something very special. Then I realised that that talent was special, but, prior to that, I would just, you know, woke up and start singing, " ooooooo," you know, whatever, and just ...
