Esta pequeña laguna rodeada de dunas tiene la combinación perfecta entre adrenalina y tranquilidad a pocas horas de Lima. El recorrido por la montaña rusa de la naturaleza te llenará de energía y luego, con el atardecer en medio del desierto, vendrá la tranquilidad. ¡Aprovéchalo! ¡Agua en el desierto! Sí, conocí el Oasis de América ubicado en Huacachina, Perú. Legué a este espectacular sitio después de cruzar dunas de hasta 200 metros de alto en tubulares. Después, vi un atardecer impresionante en el desierto de Paracas y conocí las famosas Islas Ballestas.

La Laguna de Huacachina es un oasis ubicado a cinco kilómetros al oeste de la ciudad peruana de Ica, en medio del desierto costero del Pacifico. De aguas color verde esmeralda, surgió debido al afloramiento de corrientes subterráneas y alrededor de ella hay una abundante vegetación compuesta de palmeras, eucaliptos (especies introducidas) y la especie de algarrobo conocida como huarango, la que sirve para el descanso de las aves migratorias que pasan por esta región. Todo ello contribuye a hacer de Huacachina uno de los lugares más vistosos y bellos de la costa peruana. Conocido también como el oasis de América.
Huacachina Lagoon is an oasis located five kilometers west of the Peruvian city of Ica, in the middle of the coastal desert of the Pacific. Emerald green waters, arose due to the upwelling of underground streams and around it there is an abundant vegetation composed of palms, eucalyptus (introduced species) and the species known as Huarango carob, which serves the rest of migratory birds that pass through this region. All this contributes to making Huacachina one of the most spectacular and beautiful places of the Peruvian coast. It is also known as the Oasis of America.

I passed through Ica, Peru for a few nights to check out the Oasis of Huacachina and to ride sandboards and buggys through the desert. Here is a short video of my sandboarding experience on the sand dunes of Huacachina, Peru.
If you notice, the snowboarding approach didn't work very well because the sandboards were very sticky, the straps unstrapped easily and the sand was very hot.
When sandboarding in Huacachina, I would recommend renting a good board if you want to actually try to stand and "surf" down the dunes, and also, go early in the day or just before sunset when then sand is cooler.
Definitely add Sandboarding and Buggy Rides at the Huacachina Oasis outside Ica, Peru to your Travel Peru bucket list. Much more exciting than the Nasca Lines.

Huacachina Desert Oasis in Peru has amazing sand dunes around. When traveling to Peru you should stop there for awesome experience in driving in a buggy car in dunes and sand boarding. This is one of the best things to do on your trip to Peru.

Huacachina is a village in the Ica Region, in southwestern Peru. It is located in the Ica Province, near the city of Ica in the Ica District. Huacachina has a population of 115 (1999). The oasis features on the back of the 50 Nuevo Sol note.
Huacachina is built around a small natural lake in the desert. Called the "oasis of America," it serves as a resort for local families from the nearby city of Ica, and increasingly as an attraction for tourists drawn by the sports of sandboarding and taking dune buggy rides on sand dunes that stretch several hundred feet high.
Legend holds that the lagoon was created when a beautiful native princess was apprehended at her bath by a young hunter. She fled, leaving the pool of water she had been bathing in to become the lagoon. The folds of her mantle, streaming behind her as she ran, became the surrounding sand dunes. And the woman herself is rumored to still live in the oasis as a mermaid.

La Laguna de Huacachina es un oasis ubicado a cinco kilómetros al oeste de la ciudad peruana de Ica, en medio del desierto costero del Pacifico. De aguas color verde esmeralda, surgió debido al afloramiento de corrientes subterráneas y alrededor de ella hay una abundante vegetación compuesta de palmeras, eucaliptos (especies introducidas) y la especie de algarrobo conocida como huarango, la que sirve para el descanso de las aves migratorias que pasan por esta región. Todo ello contribuye a hacer de Huacachina uno de los lugares más vistosos y bellos de la costa peruana. Conocido también como el oasis de América. Huacachina Lagoon is an oasis located five kilometers west of the Peruvian city of Ica, in the middle of the coastal desert of the Pacific. Emerald green waters, arose due to the upwelling of underground streams and around it there is an abundant vegetation composed of palms, eucalyptus (introduced species) and the species known as Huarango carob, which serves the rest of migratory birds that pass through this region. Read more and see the full photo essay of traveling to Ica and Huacachina, Peru to go sandboarding at http://www.tourist2townie.com I passed through Ica, Peru for a few nights to check out the Oasis of Huacachina and to ride sandboards and buggys through the desert. Here is a short video of my sandboarding experience on the sand dunes of Huacachina, Peru. If you notice, the snowboarding approach didn't work very well because the sandboards were very sticky, the straps unstrapped easily and the sand was very hot. When sandboarding in Huacachina, I would recommend renting a good board if you want to actually try to stand and "surf" down the dunes, and also, go early in the day or just before sunset when then sand is cooler. Definitely add Sandboarding and Buggy Rides at the Huacachina Oasis outside Ica, Peru to your Travel Peru bucket list. ¡Agua en el desierto! Sí, conocí el Oasis de América ubicado en Huacachina, Perú. Legué a este espectacular sitio después de cruzar dunas de hasta 200 metros de alto en tubulares. Después, vi un atardecer impresionante en el desierto de Paracas y conocí las famosas Islas Ballestas.

De aguas color verde esmeralda, surgió debido al afloramiento de corrientes subterráneas y alrededor de ella hay una abundante vegetación compuesta de palmeras, eucaliptos (especies introducidas) y la especie de algarrobo conocida como huarango, la que sirve para el descanso de las aves migratorias que pasan por esta región. Todo ello contribuye a hacer de Huacachina uno de los lugares más vistosos y bellos de la costa peruana. Conocido también como el oasis de América.
Huacachina Lagoon is an oasis located five kilometers west of the Peruvian city of Ica, in the middle of the coastal desert of the Pacific. Emerald green waters, arose due to the upwelling of underground streams and around it there is an abundant vegetation composed of palms, eucalyptus (introduced species) and the species known as Huarango carob, which serves the rest of migratory birds that pass through this region. All this contributes to making Huacachina one of the most spectacular and beautiful places of the Peruvian coast. It is also known as the Oasis of America.

I passed through Ica, Peru for a few nights to check out the Oasis of Huacachina and to ride sandboards and buggys through the desert. Here is a short video of my sandboarding experience on the sand dunes of Huacachina, Peru.
If you notice, the snowboarding approach didn't work very well because the sandboards were very sticky, the straps unstrapped easily and the sand was very hot.
When sandboarding in Huacachina, I would recommend renting a good board if you want to actually try to stand and "surf" down the dunes, and also, go early in the day or just before sunset when then sand is cooler.
Definitely add Sandboarding and Buggy Rides at the Huacachina Oasis outside Ica, Peru to your Travel Peru bucket list. Much more exciting than the Nasca Lines.

The lagoon of Huacachina is a desert oasis hidden between massive sand dunes along Perus arid Pacific coast. The lagoons blue waters are surrounded by palm, eucalyptus and guarango trees, and a string of resorts and hotels. This hideaway is just a few miles west of the provincial capital city Ica, home of Perus grape brandy Pisco. Climbing up, dune-buggying over, and sand-boarding down the biggest sane dune in the world in the desert oasis town of Huacachina! Having arrived in Lima on a Monday, our first weekend in Peru was spent escaping the city limits in search of adrenaline inspired adventures in Huacachina in the form of sandboarding and dune buggy riding. The lagoon of Huacachina is a desert oasis hidden between massive sand dunes along Perus arid Pacific coast.
The lagoons blue waters are surrounded by palm, eucalyptus and guarango trees, and a string of resorts and hotels.
This hideaway is just a few miles west of the provincial capital city Ica, home of Perus grape brandy Pisco.
The oasis is formed by upwelling from a vast subterranean aquifer, and creates a sanctuary for thousands of migratory birds.
But its the mountainous sand dunes surrounding the town that have drawn a new breed of traveler, making Huacachina a Mecca for sand boarders.
They carve down the dunes and fall in a cloud of sand, knowing a dip in the lagoon, or one of the many hotel swimming pools will wash most of it out of their hair, eyes and nostrils.
More sedate travelers can sip a Pisco sour at a bar overlooking the lagoon, or take a dip in its refreshing waters.

Equally as stimulating to the nervous system, you race down sand dunes head first experiencing a steep incline. You're racing down the dunes at such high velocity, It's only mere seconds before you go from the top of the dune to the bottom. Although these activities in Huacachina (just outside of Ica) may induce a few grey hairs we wholeheartedly recommend it. After all, if you're not doing something that scares you every once in a while you aren't truly living!
PS. To rent a private dune buggy with a guide and access to three dunes for sand boarding it costs roughly 50 Soles per person based on a three person tour. This is roughly $50 in total.

Welcome to Huacachina. Today we're going to be having some fun in the desert and first up we're riding dune buggies.
Woo!
Woah! Screaming!
Enough of an adrenaline rush so far? Oh my goodness. We've only been doing this for a few minutes and I'm already feeling wobbly and shakey. I've just been screaming the whole time. You know what, I did this five years ago and we haven't even done the scariest stuff yet. So how do you feel about that? Nervous.
Si. Es Pacito.
Screaming. Hahaha.
Hahaha.

So this is challenge number two. Sandboarding. Are you up for it? I thought the first dune was pretty scary. This is even steeper.
How was it? Woo!
Woo Hoo!
Hahaha. Laughing and screaming.
I'm going. Oh, my gosh. Oh my gosh. Screaming.
How was it? I broke my shoe in the process.
Hahaha.
We suffered one casualty today. My shoe didn't make the third run.
Well they say, if you don't do something scary every day you're not really living. So, I think this qualifies. It was so much fun but completely terrifying at the same time. I think I screamed the whole way. Just me screaming. That is the soundtrack to this. What was more terrifying - the dune buggy or going down head first on the sandboard. Both. Both are equally terrifying. Like you have no control over either of them. But highly recommended if you come to Peru. Do it.
So for the three of us to do a private tour it was 50 Soles per person which works out to roughly $50 total.

Equally as stimulating to the nervous system, you race down sand dunes head first experiencing a steep incline. You're racing down the dunes at such high velocity, It's only mere seconds before you go from the top of the dune to the bottom. Although these activities in Huacachina (just outside of Ica) may induce a few grey hairs we wholeheartedly recommend it. After all, if you're not doing something that scares you every once in a while you aren't truly living!
PS. To rent a private dune buggy with a guide and access to three dunes for sand boarding it costs roughly 50 Soles per person based on a three person tour. This is roughly $50 in total.

Welcome to Huacachina. Today we're going to be having some fun in the desert and first up we're riding dune buggies.
Woo!
Woah! Screaming!
Enough of an adrenaline rush so far? Oh my goodness. We've only been doing this for a few minutes and I'm already feeling wobbly and shakey. I've just been screaming the whole time. You know what, I did this five years ago and we haven't even done the scariest stuff yet. So how do you feel about that? Nervous.
Si. Es Pacito.
Screaming. Hahaha.
Hahaha.
Screaming.
So this is challenge number two. Sandboarding. Are you up for it? I thought the first dune was pretty scary. This is even steeper.
How was it? Woo!
Woo Hoo!
Hahaha. Laughing and screaming.
I'm going. Oh, my gosh. Oh my gosh. Screaming.
How was it? I broke my shoe in the process.
Hahaha.
We suffered one casualty today. My shoe didn't make the third run.
Well they say, if you don't do something scary every day you're not really living. So, I think this qualifies. It was so much fun but completely terrifying at the same time. I think I screamed the whole way. Just me screaming. That is the soundtrack to this. What was more terrifying - the dune buggy or going down head first on the sandboard. Both. Both are equally terrifying. Like you have no control over either of them. But highly recommended if you come to Peru. Do it.
So for the three of us to do a private tour it was 50 Soles per person which works out to roughly $50 total.
And we've got an awesome driver. If they want to go with you how can they find you? Speaking in Spanish.

Episode 21
We started our adventure by climbing the tallest sand dune to get the best view of Huacachina. This task is easier said than done and we found that out first hand.
Robbie had his shoes filled with sand while Fil was behind everyone after being mistakenly locked out of our room so he took the most direct and most difficult path up the sand dune which proved to be an incredible challenge.
Peter climbed as high as he could with no water and stopped to get camera shots but had his main camera bag fall and get filled with sand. It took many many hours to clean up the mess.
Later that day we booked a dune buggy tour to explore the Pacific coast which is about 1.5 hours away. On our way there we were unexpectedly met by a sandstorm which had small sand bits and stones hitting your face so we all covered up with our sunglasses and hat.
After the unpleasant experience was finally over we were met with the stunning sights and scenes of the Pacific Ocean. Fil and Kevin found out how cold the Pacific Ocean was when a big wave caught them off guard and soaked them. This Pacific Coastline was vast and we took our dune buggy up the shoreline to explore more.
Huacachina is backpacker’s paradise in the southwestern desert of Peru. This small mystical village in the Ica province is a natural oasis and is featured on the 50 sole (Peru’s official currency). With enormous sand dunes on all sides, it’s a wonder the town isn’t covered by the barren desert that surrounds it. Dune Buggies and Sandboards are the way of life around here, just don’t forget to bring the water or you may be seeing a mirage.
