Alex Majoli (born 1971, Ravenna, Italy) is an Italian photographer associated with Magnum Photos known for his documentation of war and conflict.
Majoli joined the f45 studio in Ravenna at age 15 where he worked with Daniele Casadio, and then studied at the Art Institute in Ravenna, graduating in 1991. While there he joined the Grazia Neri Agency for which he traveled to Yugoslavia, Kosovo, and Albania to document the conflict. In 1999 he went to Greece and documented the closing of an insane asylum on Leros and the reintroduction of the inmates to society. In 1995 he went to South America to work on his project Requiem in Samba, and where he also worked on Hotel Marinum about port cities all over the world. In the late 1990s he also began making documentary films.
In 2001 he became a full member of Magnum Photos, at which time he also began documenting the Taliban in Afghanistan and Iraq. He has contributed to such publications as Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine, Granta, Vanity Fair and National Geographic. In 2004 he created an exhibition, Off Broadway, along with Thomas Dworzak, Paolo Pellegrin and Ilkka Uimonen, which was shown in SoHo.
Magnum Photos is an international photographic cooperative owned by its photographer-members, with offices in New York, Paris, London and Tokyo. According to co-founder Henri Cartier-Bresson, "Magnum is a community of thought, a shared human quality, a curiosity about what is going on in the world, a respect for what is going on and a desire to transcribe it visually."
Robert Capa, David "Chim" Seymour, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and William Vandivert (all photographers), Rita Vandivert and Maria Eisner were the founding members of Magnum in Paris in 1947, based on an idea of Capa's. Seymour, Cartier-Bresson and Rodger were all absent from the meeting at which it was founded. (In response to a letter telling him that he was a member, Rodger wrote that Magnum seemed a good idea but, "It all sounded too halcyon to be true," when Capa had told him of it and, "I rather dismissed the whole thing from my mind".) Rita Vandivert was the first President, and head of the New York office; Maria Eisner the head of the Paris office. The plan was for Rodger to cover Africa and the Middle East; Cartier-Bresson to cover south and east Asia; Seymour and William Vandivert to cover Europe and the United States, respectively; and Capa to be free to follow his curiosity and events.
Dancehall is a genre of Jamaican popular music that originated in the late 1970s. Initially dancehall was a more sparse version of reggae than the roots style, which had dominated much of the 1970s. Two of the biggest stars of the early dancehall era were Yellowman and Eek-a-Mouse. Dancehall brought a new generation of producers, including Linval Thompson, Gussie Clarke and Jah Thomas. In the mid-1980s, digital instrumentation became more prevalent, changing the sound considerably, with digital dancehall (or "ragga") becoming increasingly characterized by faster rhythms. (The word "bashment", a term originating in the 1990s, was used to describe a particularly good dance; for example "to go to a bashment dance". In the Dancehall vernacular, "bashment" is therefore an adjective instead of a noun.)
In the early 1990s songs by Dawn Penn, Shabba Ranks, Patra and Chaka Demus and Pliers were the first dancehall megahits in the US and abroad. Other varieties of dancehall achieved crossover success outside of Jamaica during the mid-to-late 1990s. After the popularizing of Buju Banton's dancehall song "Boom Bye Bye" in the early 1990s, dancehall music came under criticism over anti-gay lyrics in a few songs. The early 2000s saw the success of newer charting acts such as Rihanna, Elephant Man and Sean Paul. Dancehall made a resurgence within the pop market in the late 2000s, with songs by Konshens, Mr. Vegas, Popcaan, Mavado, Vybz Kartel, Beenie Man among others.

This multi-thematic piece was inspired by “sikka”, the gold coins sewn to clothing dating back to Babylonic times that eventually became the shiny plastic objects we know today as sequins. By projecting the contents of the DVDs back onto their surfaces the artist continues to investigate both new uses for discarded objects as well as his interest in combining the phantasmagorical properties of cinema with its physical elements. A core principal which framed the establishment of Magnum Photos in 1947 was the belief that photographers should have a point of view in their imagery that transcended any formulaic recording of contemporary events. This tradition continues today with the new series of photographic essays being produced by Magnum and Leica. Burning curiosity breeds evocative expression and it is precisely this spirit which Magnum and Leica will be supporting through this new agreement to create and publish new multimedia essays that will take a deeper look into the stories behind the photographs. The stories will cover new works by Magnum photographers addressing contemporary themes as well as investigations into the archives of photographers career-long obsessions to share Magnum photographer's individua...

In midnight skies burn on many stories untold
On icy nights winds blow that touch everyone
You still think you are so far away
But you pay the dearest price of us all
'Cause you stand on the edge of the world
And you're dreaming all your precious time away
Dreaming all your precious time away
Morning comes so soon too bright in your eyes
Talking to yourself you don't even try
There alone where no-one bothers you
You can stay a thousand miles from us all
And in this world you sleep ignoring
Another night has passed
This endless sleep might be rewarding
