Texel
Texel (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈtɛsəl]) is a municipality and an island with a population of 13,641 in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands. It is the largest and most populated island of the West Frisian Islands in the Wadden Sea. The island is situated north of Den Helder, northeast of Noorderhaaks, also known as "Razende Bol" and southwest of Vlieland.
Name
The name Texel is Frisian, but because of historical sound-changes in Dutch, where all -x- sounds have been replaced with -s- sounds (compare for instance English Fox, Frisian Fokse, German Fuchs with Dutch Vos), the name is typically pronounced Tessel in Dutch.
History
In the early Middle Ages and before, Texel and Wieringen may have been much bigger and met each other as opposite banks of the Marsdiep, which was then a river with banks of permanent land: see here.
In the 13th Century Ada, Countess of Holland was held prisoner on Texel by her uncle William.
Texel received city rights in 1415.
Texel was involved in the Battle of Scheveningen (1653) during the First Anglo-Dutch War and the Battle of Texel (1673) during the Third Anglo-Dutch War.

Texel Halve Marathon 2016 deel 1
Texel Halve Marathon viert 25 september 2016 haar lustrum. Het begint met gezellige drukte op Willemsoord in Den Helder waar de deelnemers hun startbewijs op komen ophalen. Na de overtocht met de Texelse boot zetten de deelnemers onder luid getoeter voet aan wal. Dit jaar was voor het eerst de eiland sart waardoor het aantal deelnemers groter was dan ooit.

It is located near the other Frisian island called ‘Terschelling’ where NOVASOL also offers holiday homes for self catering, should you wish to spend your holiday visiting more than one of these lovely islands. The island’s name, Texel, is Frisian but because of the Dutch language’s development through time it is now pronounced “Tessel”. There are many attractions and activities on Texel such as bicycling, hiking, swimming and horseback riding. There are also many cosy restaurants and cafes. The people of the West Frisian Islands are generally fairly good at English. The menus on restaurants are usually in Dutch though. Maybe you can ask the waiter for what he or she recommends, or you can simply choose something from the menu at random and be surprised with a Dutch specialty yet to be discovered.
