Adore (The Smashing Pumpkins album)

Adore is the fourth album by American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins, released in June 1998 by Virgin Records. After the multi-platinum success of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and a subsequent yearlong world tour, follow-up Adore was considered "one of the most anticipated albums of 1998" by MTV. Recording the album proved to be a challenge as the band members struggled with lingering interpersonal problems and musical uncertainty in the wake of three increasingly successful rock albums and the departure of drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. Frontman Billy Corgan would later characterize Adore as "a band falling apart".

The result was a much more subdued and electronica-tinged sound that Greg Kot of Rolling Stone magazine called "a complete break with the past". The album divided the fan base and sold only a fraction of the previous two albums. However, the album was well received by critics, and became the third straight Pumpkins album to be nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. and has gained a cult following. A remastered and expanded version of the album was released on CD and vinyl in September 2014 as a part of the band's project to reissue their back catalogue from 1991–2000.

Alessia Cara

Alessia Caracciolo (Italian pronunciation: [aˈlɛssja kaˈrattʃolo]; born July 11, 1996), better known as Alessia Cara, is a Canadian singer and songwriter. She is signed to EP Entertainment and Def Jam Recordings and is best known for "Here", her debut single from her debut album, Know-It-All, released November 13, 2015. A sleeper hit, the song reached the top 5 in the United States and the top 20 in Canada. Prior to her work with EP and Def Jam, Cara was known for her acoustic song covers on YouTube.

Early life

Alessia Caracciolo, known as Alessia Cara, was born in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, a city just outside Toronto, where she attended Cardinal Ambrozic Catholic Secondary School. She is of Italian descent from Calabria; her father was born in Canada, to Italian parents, and her mother is an Italian immigrant. As a child, she wrote poetry and did theatre. At the age of 10 she began playing guitar and taught herself how to play various songs. At the age of 13 she began her own YouTube channel where she posted covers of songs that she performed.

At Seventeen

"At Seventeen" is a song by Janis Ian, released in 1975 on Between the Lines (her seventh studio album) and as a single. Ian's most successful recording, the song is a commentary on society's beauty standards, adolescent cruelty, the illusion of popularity, and teenage angst, as reflected upon from the maturity of adulthood. It is told from the point of view of a woman who was an "ugly duckling" as a girl and ignored in high school while the popular girls got all the attention.

Background

Janis Ian, then 22, wrote "At Seventeen" in 1973 at her mother's house over the course of three months. In her autobiography Society's Child, Ian says that the song was inspired by a newspaper article about a former teenage debutante who learned the hard way that being popular did not solve all her problems. The article included the quote, "I learned the truth at eighteen"; Ian found that the word "seventeen" worked better than "eighteen" when she tried to put this lyric with the bossa nova-style melody she had been composing on guitar. She also says she initially did not want to record or perform the song because she felt it was far too personal to share, but eventually changed her mind after adding the song's final verse ("To those of us who knew the pain/Of Valentines that never came...").

Lukas Graham is a Danish soul pop band consisting of Lukas Graham Forchhammer (vocals), Mark "Lovestick" Falgren (drums), Magnus “Magnúm” Larsson (bass) and Kasper Daugaard (keyboard). Launching their debut album in 2012 on Copenhagen Records, Lukas Graham quickly became the most popular live act in Denmark. That success translated to the rest of Europe and caught the attention of Warner Bros. Records who co-signed them in 2013. Career

2011–12: Career beginnings

The band started its career in Denmark in late 2011 when it released two homemade YouTube videos of the band performing Criminal Mind and Drunk in the Morning, recorded in Lukas' home. The videos were shared on Facebook among friends, and soon they had several hundred thousand views. The band's soulful and funky sound quickly spread in the Copenhagen underground and through online postings, which led Copenhagen Records to sign them. Lukas Graham achieved commercial success in October 2011 with the release of its debut single. Its first Danish tour sold over 30,000 concert tickets, even though its album had not been released yet.
