Bjarke Bundgaard Ingels (born 2 October 1974) is a Danish architect. He is the founder and creative partner of Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) since 2005. Known for his innovative and ambitious designs and projects, many of his buildings defy traditional architectural conventions and dimensions. His projects are often highly photogenic, ranging from representations of mountains to snowflakes. He often incorporates sustainable development ideas and sociological concepts into his designs, but tries to achieve a balance between the playful and practical approaches to architecture. His trademarks include sloped lines and designs that are shaped to their surroundings.
Amongst his works are Islands Brygge Harbour Bath, a series of five open-air swimming pools in Copenhagen Harbour (2003) and three major housing projects in Ørestad on the southern outskirts of Copenhagen: VM Houses (2005), multi-family housing in V and M shaped apartment buildings; Mountain Dwellings (2008), an extensive parking facility combined with terraced housing; and 8 House (2010), a large mixed-use housing development.
Bjarke Ingels Group, often referred to as BIG, is a Copenhagen and New York based group of architects, designers, builders and thinkers operating within the fields of architecture, urbanism, research and development. The office is currently involved in a large number of projects throughout Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. The office now has over 300 employees from over 25 countries in the world.
Bjarke Ingels established BIG in late 2005 after he and his former partner, Julien De Smedt, decided to discontinue their common practice PLOT that had gained considerable success since its establishment in 2001. His new firm continues to draw extensive national and international attention and won several international awards for its first completed commission, the Mountain, a residential project in Copenhagen which had been commenced by PLOT. Over the next couple of years, BIG won a number of international competitions and received several large commissions around the world. These include a waste-to-energy plant which doubles as a ski-slope in Copenhagen, Denmark, the West 57th Street mixed-use tower in New York for Durst Fetner Residential, the National Art Gallery of Greenland in Nuuk, headquarters for the Shenzhen Energy Company in Shenzhen, China and Kimball Art Center in Utah, USA.
Bödvar Bjarki (Old Norse: Böðvar Bjarki), meaning 'Warlike Little-Bear', is the hero appearing in tales of Hrólf Kraki in the Saga of Hrólf Kraki, in the Latin epitome to the lost Skjöldunga saga, and as Biarco in Saxo Grammaticus' Gesta Danorum. Some think he and the hero Beowulf in the Old English poem Beowulf were originally the same personage, while others reject this notion.
Unlike Beowulf, Bödvar is said to have been Norwegian, which may be explained by the fact that his story was written by Icelandic authors who were mostly of Norwegian descent.
However, his brother was the king of Gautland (Geatland) and, like Beowulf, it was from Geatland that Bödvar arrived in Denmark. Moreover, upon arriving at the court of Denmark, he kills a monstrous beast that has been terrorizing the court at Yule for two years.
The famous poem Bjarkamál (of which only a few stanzas are preserved but which Saxo Grammaticus presents in the form of a florid Latin paraphrase) is understood as a dialogue between Bödvar Bjarki and his younger companion Hjalti which begins by Hjalti again and again urging Bödvar to awake from his sleep and fight for King Hrólf in this last battle in which they are doomed to be defeated. As explained in the prose, this rousing was ill-done, as Bjarki was in a trance and his spirit in the form of a monstrous bear was already aiding Hrólf far more than Bjarki could do with only his mannish strength.
Big means large or of great size.

With an estimated population of nearly 8.5 million in 2014, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. The New York City Metropolitan Area is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. New York City makes up over 40% of the population of New York State. Two-thirds of the state's population lives in the New York City Metropolitan Area, and nearly 40% live on Long Island. Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany.

Bjarke Ingels Group has released a conceptual design for its latest project in New York: an office skyscraper wrapped in a ribbon of green terraces. Called The Spiral, the 65-storey glass tower is slated to rise at 66 Hudson Boulevard, as part of the massive Hudson Yards mixed-use development that is now under construction on the west side of Manhattan. The tower will cover a full block, stretching from West 34th Street to West 35th Street, and from 10th Avenue to Hudson Park. It will be located near the intersection of the High Line and the four-acre (1.6-hectare) Hudson Boulevard Park. Climbing 1,005 feet (306 metres), the tower's design draws from both historic and contemporary design styles. "The Spiral combines the classic ziggurat silhouette of the premodern skyscraper with the s...

Renowned Danish architect Bjarke Ingels here offers his architectural advice to aspiring architects and explains why architecture is fundamentally important for the world we live in. Bjarke Ingels is considered one of the greatest architects of our time, with projects such as the BIG U, which contains a plan to fortify the whole south tip of Manhattan against future storms and rising sea levels. His architectural vision evolves around a philosophy that could be described as a pragmatic utopianism, combining everyday needs with sustainable solutions to the climatic challenges. We live in the anthropogenic age, where humans don’t adapt to life, but life adapts to human needs, Ingels explains, which makes his advice to young architects designing tomorrow’s world simple and clear. The key f...

For more info: http://bit.ly/1haDehL or visit http://www.archdaily.com/ At ArchDaily, we think that Bjarke Ingels is one of the most inspiring architects practicing today. Having found success at a relatively young age, Bjarke has never shied away from embracing his YES IS MORE philosophy. His conspicuous enthusiasm for the potential of architecture and design sets him apart from his peers. And it is precisely this go-to attitude that has allowed him to overcome some of the significant limits that face many young architects today. An impressive portfolio of both built and upcoming projects shows that his approach to design, though sometimes criticized, is profoundly impacting the social environment of architecture. On running an office, Bjarke says that "you have the opportunity and th...

“The one thing all humans share is that we all inhabit the same limited amount of real estate, which is planet earth.” Celebrated Danish architect Bjarke Ingels discusses an ultra local approach to architecture in a global world. The beauty of the human project has always been its adaptability, the result of which is a highly differentiated catalogue of possible ways of living: “Each city becomes a very specific experiment in how to inhabit this particular part of the planet for this particular group of people,” Ingels says, proposing that we use this “catalogue of global best practice” as inspiration for building better, more sustainable architecture and cities. While modernist architecture tried to create one style of building to fit all humans, today’s architecture can help us learn fr...
In this exclusive video interview, Bjarke Ingels explains how his firm BIG used stacks of fibreglass boxes to create a huge undulating structure on the lawn in front of the Serpentine Gallery in London. BIG's Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2016 is made up of thousands of translucent fibreglass blocks, which are stacked on top of each other to form a wall that appears to have been pulled apart. "We've taken maybe the simplest element in architecture – the wall – and unzipped it to form a hall inside," Ingels says in the movie, which Dezeen filmed at the unveiling of the pavilion this morning. "What we've tried to do is create a sort of mountainous landscape on the outside and a cavernous canyon on the inside."
