218 Kids' Rugs

Kids rugs are a great way to add colour, pattern and texture to a nursery, bedroom, family room or playroom. Many parents swear by them – but not just as a decor solution. If you have timber floors or tiles, a kids rug will provide something soft and warm underfoot; as well as insulation during the colder months. Whether it’s a playmat with sport silhouettes or a couple of shag rugs, kids rugs will also protect your floors from wear and tear, and your little one’s knees and elbows from bruising. Not only that, but they can be tailored to suit your children’s interests, too. Read on to find out more. More

What size rug should I choose?

First, decide on how you intend to use the children’s rug. You may want to anchor a room, create zones, or simply provide comfort and safety to a particular area. If it’s to cover a large surface area, in favour of carpet, look for something that is big enough to sit under all furniture in the room while leaving a moderate border from the walls to the edge of the rug (about 30 centimetres). If you’re placing a children’s rug under a play area or workstation, allow enough room for chairs to be pulled out. If you have a small kids rug that doesn’t quite fill the space the way you like, there’s always the option to layer another rug on top. In any case, measure out your floor space before looking for kids rugs online.

What rug materials are most appropriate for kids rooms and nurseries?

Natural fibre children's rugs are preferred in nurseries and kids rooms, mostly because they don’t pose any risk to your child’s health, but also because they tend to be more resilient. Natural fibres include wool, cotton, sisal, jute and seagrass. Wool tends to be the highest quality natural fibre and is therefore the most expensive – with that in mind, it may not be ideal if you’re likely to have a number of spills from wobbly toddlers. Cotton is a much safer option as it, too, is soft and durable. Sisal rugs are also good, as they are easy to clean and will resist dirt buildup, while jute is less susceptible to stains, but is also the most affordable option. Synthetic kids rugs, on the other hand, may not feel as luxurious or wear as well as natural fibre rugs, but they can look just as good and are available at a very affordable price point. Some parents prefer this option as it allows them to easily swap rugs out as their child’s tastes and decor change.

What patterns work best in kids rooms?

If you have a young child with a growing appetite for making decisions on their own, allowing them to choose their own kids rug is a great way for them to add their personal stamp to their bedroom or playspace. You may also use the opportunity to find something with an educational design, such as a map, puzzle or vocabulary words. Even a print of wild animals will help your toddler differentiate between a lion and tiger, for example. Kids rugs and nursery rugs can ignite the imagination! If you’re looking for a way to complement your existing decor, look for colours in varying tones that already exist around the space. Bright colours and patterns are ideal should you want to create a focal point or accent. They will also add a sense of design flair to a neutral room.
