What do I need to know about indoor pots and planters?

Unlike outdoor varieties, indoor pots and planters don’t need to be weather-resistant – however, they still require good drainage! When shopping for planters online, make sure they have some sort of drainage system, otherwise you risk the roots of plants rotting from trapped moisture. If you do buy an indoor pot or planter that has no drainage holes, create your own makeshift drainage system using pebbles or rocks. Just line the bottom of the flower pot with the rocks before adding any soil and they’ll act as an internal drip tray. In general, look for designs that have a drip tray or something for run-off water, so you don’t hurt your plants or the surfaces they sit on.

What about wall-mounted or hanging planters?

Wall planters and vertical gardens are the perfect way to inject some greenery into your home without taking up valuable surface space. Wall planters are especially fitting in kitchens where avid cooks use them to store fresh herbs. Otherwise, consider mounting hanging planters from your ceiling – just make sure you account for the entire weight of the pot plant when watered, and secure it accordingly. Also check how much sunlight your wall and hanging plants need, and position them appropriately, knowing it’ll be hard to move them around once the screws go in. If you don’t have a good track record of caring for plants, terrariums are a low-maintenance option that practically take care of themselves. You can buy terrariums in tabletop, wall-mounted and hanging designs.
