Osaka
Osaka (大阪市, Ōsaka-shi) (Japanese pronunciation: [oːsaka]; 
listen ) is a designated city in the Kansai region of Japan. It is the capital city of Osaka Prefecture and the largest component of the Keihanshin Metropolitan Area, the second largest metropolitan area in Japan and among the largest in the world with over 19 million inhabitants. Situated at the mouth of the Yodo River on Osaka Bay, Osaka is the second largest city by the daytime population after Tokyo's 23 wards and the third largest city by the nighttime population after Tokyo's 23 special wards and Yokohama in Japan, serving as a major economic hub.
Historically a merchant city, Osaka has also been known as the "nation's kitchen" (天下の台所, tenka no daidokoro) and served as a center for the rice trade during the Edo period.
History
Prehistory to the Kofun period
Some of the earliest signs of human habitation in the Osaka area at the Morinomiya ruins (森ノ宮遺跡, Morinomiya iseki) comprise shell mounds, sea oysters and buried human skeletons from the 5th–6th centuries BC. It is believed that what is today the Uehonmachi area consisted of a peninsular land with an inland sea in the east. During the Yayoi period, permanent habitation on the plains grew as rice farming became popular.

Osaka Monorail
The Osaka Monorail (大阪モノレール, Ōsaka Monorēru) is a monorail in northern Osaka Prefecture, Japan, operated by Osaka Monorail Co., Ltd. (大阪高速鉄道株式会社, Ōsaka Kōsoku Tetsudō Kabushiki-gaisha). It is noted in the Guinness Book of World Records as being the longest monorail in the world at over 21.2 kilometres long, although it has since been bypassed in length by the Chongqing Monorail. It also links three campuses of Osaka University.
Main Line
The Main Line runs on an elevated line between Osaka International Airport and Kadoma. It opened on June 1, 1990 between Senri-Chuo and Minami-Ibaraki stations. On September 30, 1994 it reached Shibahara Station, on April 1, 1997, Osaka Airport, and on August 22, 1997, its current eastern terminal at Kadoma-shi Station. It is 21.2 km long. A trip over the entire Main Line takes about 36 minutes, and costs ¥540.

Saito Line
The Saito Line branch opened in two stages: on October 1, 1998 from Bampaku-kinen-koen Station to Handai-byoin-mae Station, and on March 19, 2007, to Saito-nishi Station, in the residential area of Saito, about a kilometer from the Minoo Campus of Osaka University (former Osaka University of Foreign Studies). The branch is 6.8 km long.

Osaka is known as Japan's kitchen and for good reason! It's loaded with some of the best and cheapest restaurants and street stands anywhere. Enter Dotonbori, the old entertainment district of Osaka that's also ground zero for cheap and easy to find street food. John Daub and Kevin Riley, a long-term resident of Osaka take their stomachs down the Dotonbori strip. We also introduce a very Osakan word: "Kuidaore" meaning eat until you drop! Street food on Dotonbori: ★ Takoyaki Called "octopus ball" by newbies to Japan, these round treats normally come topped with a tangy thick soy sauce, Japanese mayonaise, and dried fish and seaweed. In This Video: Trip to Nara Nara is an old and historical town in Japan, not far from Osaka and Kyoto. It’s very easy to get there by public transportation. The first thing you’ll notice as soon as you arrive to Nara are the deer - they are free roaming all over the city, and people love to interact with them. Todai-ji Temple - 500 JPY ($4.17) One of the biggest and most famous temples in Nara is the Todai-ji Temple, and although it was intensely busy, we decided to pay the entrance fee and go inside. It was good to see, but it was a very busy day that we visited. Decided to take a spontaneous trip from Tokyo to Osaka and explore some of the local areas in Osaka. I visited the Karahori Shotengai area which is a shopping street that had a really nostalgic vibe.

Osaka is known as Japan's kitchen and for good reason! It's loaded with some of the best and cheapest restaurants and street stands anywhere.

Osaka is known as Japan's kitchen and for good reason! It's loaded with some of the best and cheapest restaurants and street stands anywhere.
Enter Dotonbori, the old entertainment district of Osaka that's also ground zero for cheap and easy to find street food. John Daub and Kevin Riley, a long-term resident of Osaka take their stomachs down the Dotonbori strip. We also introduce a very Osakan word: "Kuidaore" meaning eat until you drop!
Street food on Dotonbori:
★ Takoyaki
Called "octopus ball" by newbies to Japan, these round treats normally come topped with a tangy thick soy sauce, Japanese mayonaise, and dried fish and seaweed. Some shops go even further adding half boiled eggs or mountains of green negi!
A bowl of 6 to 8 balls costs 380 to 450 Yen.
Recommended shop: Creo-Ru Takoyaki
★ Kushikatsu
Another Osaka specialty you can find at a few stands. It's skewered and battered meats and vegetables deep fried until golden. pTake each skewer and dip it once in the special bath bin near the table or register. You won't be disappointed! Vegetables start at 60 yen and meats at 150 yen. Large Tiger Shrimps can go for 380 yen for one! Prices are listed on the menu outside the shop.
★ Gyoza
Osaka has it's own variety of dumplings. What's different? It's cheaper and made in Osaka! 180 yen for 6 gyoza!
★ Ramen
A few shops serve up hot bowls on the street side. Get a ticket at the vending machine for about 600 yen and enjoy!
Recommended shop: Kinryu Ramen (The one with the Dragon!)
★ Crab legs
Who would have thought crab was big in Osaka, but one of the most dominant restaurants serve them char-grilled right at the front of the street. The also have kani miso or "crab brains" served in a half shell. 500 yen for that. Yum.
Recommended shop: Kani Doraku
★ More!!!
The more you walk around, the more Dotonbori will surprise you.

If you visit Osaka, then you must check out the Dotonbori area for delicious Japanese food and street food!! Dotonbori is filled with Kansai classics like takoyaki(octopus balls), okonomiyaki(Japanese savoury pancake), kushi-katsu(deep fried skewers), yakisoba(fried noodles) and much more.
In this video, I visited Dotonbori and asked the locals for some of their recommended restaurants and shops in the area. Also, my Osaka friend Rachel from orangetummy showed me some of her favourites too!

Nara is an old and historical town in Japan, not far from Osaka and Kyoto. It’s very easy to get there by public transportation. The first thing you’ll notice as soon as you arrive to Nara are the deer - they are free roaming all over the city, and people love to interact with them.
Todai-ji Temple - 500 JPY ($4.17)
One of the biggest and most famous temples in Nara is the Todai-ji Temple, and although it was intensely busy, we decided to pay the entrance fee and go inside. It was good to see, but it was a very busy day that we visited.
Happoh Restaurant (和食屋 八寶)
After walking around Nara for a while, we headed back towards the train station, and had lunch at a restaurant called Happoh Restaurant (和食屋 八寶). The food was alright, but not the best. We then took the train back to Osaka to do some shopping and eating.
Tenjinbashisuji Shotengai
Tenjinbashisuji Shotengai is the longest shopping street in Japan, and it goes on for something like 2.6 km. We got back to Osaka, and walked around this area, before eating some amazing sushi.
Harukoma Sushi (春駒 支店)
Address: 5-5-2 Tenjinbashi, Kita-ku, Osaka, Japan
Open hours: Around 11 am - 9:30 am daily
Price: 3 of us ate a lot of sushi until we were full for 4,000 JPY ($33.15) - excellent value
How to get there: It’s not too far from either Temma JR station or Ogimachi Subway Station, along Tenjinbashisuji Shotengai walking street.

One of the biggest and most famous temples in Nara is the Todai-ji Temple, and although it was intensely busy, we decided to pay the entrance fee and go inside. It was good to see, but it was a very busy day that we visited.
Happoh Restaurant (和食屋 八寶)
After walking around Nara for a while, we headed back towards the train station, and had lunch at a restaurant called Happoh Restaurant (和食屋 八寶). The food was alright, but not the best. We then took the train back to Osaka to do some shopping and eating.
Tenjinbashisuji Shotengai
Tenjinbashisuji Shotengai is the longest shopping street in Japan, and it goes on for something like 2.6 km. We got back to Osaka, and walked around this area, before eating some amazing sushi.

Open hours: Around 11 am - 9:30 am daily
Price: 3 of us ate a lot of sushi until we were full for 4,000 JPY ($33.15) - excellent value
How to get there: It’s not too far from either Temma JR station or Ogimachi Subway Station, along Tenjinbashisuji Shotengai walking street.
