Mazher Mahmood (born 22 March 1963) is an undercover reporter for the British tabloid press. He spent 20 years working for the News of the World (and for The Sunday Times) during which time he was responsible for numerous investigations, including a reputed 94 that led to convictions. Later, from its foundation in 2012, he worked for the The Sun on Sunday, successor to the News of the World. Mahmood has won various newspaper awards, including British Press Awards "Reporter of the Year" 1999 for his exposé of Newcastle United directors.[23] At the awards ceremony, a figure dressed as a sheikh collected the award, and then revealed himself to be Kelvin MacKenzie, former editor of The Sun.[12]
He won Reporter of the Year again in 2011, as well as Scoop of the Year, for an investigation of cricket match-fixing. He also picked up the Sports Journalists' Association award in 2011 for the same story.
In July 2014, Mahmood was suspended from The Sun on Sunday after a trial collapsed against former X Factor judge and singer Tulisa Contostavlos with concerns voiced by a judge that Mahmood may have perjured himself. The Crown Prosecution Service subsequently announced its intention to review more than 30 criminal trials in which he gave evidence.
George Galloway (born 16 August 1954) is a British politician, broadcaster, and writer. From 2012 to 2015 he was the Respect Party Member of Parliament (MP) for Bradford West.
After becoming the youngest ever chairman of the Scottish Labour Party in 1981, he became General Secretary of the London-based charity War on Want in 1983, remaining in the post until he was elected as a Labour MP for Glasgow Hillhead at the 1987 general election. From 1997, Galloway represented its successor constituency Glasgow Kelvin, and remained as the MP for the seat until 2005. In October 2003, Galloway was expelled from Labour, having been found guilty by the party's national constitutional committee of four of the five charges of bringing the party into disrepute. Although a number of Labour MPs opposed the Iraq War, Galloway was the only one to be expelled from the party for his statements concerning the conflict.
In 2004, he became a member of Respect – The Unity Coalition, later known as the Respect Party (eventually becoming its leader by late 2013), and was elected as MP for Bethnal Green and Bow at the general election the following year. After unsuccessfully contesting the seat of Poplar and Limehouse in 2010, where he came third, with 17.5% of the vote, he returned to Westminster at the Bradford West by-election in 2012. Galloway was defeated at the 2015 general election, after a campaign in which he was accused of making false statements about the Labour candidate, Naz Shah, and was reported to the police for allegedly breaking election law.
Tula Paulinea "Tulisa" Contostavlos (born 13 July 1988), known mononymously as Tulisa, is an English singer-songwriter, actress, and television personality. She is known for being a member of the defunct Camden-based hip hop group N-Dubz, with her cousin Dappy and their friend Fazer. N-Dubz was formed in 2000 and released three studio albums before announcing an indefinite hiatus in 2011.
During 2011 to 2012, Contostavlos participated as a judge on the The X Factor. She mentored the "Groups" category in her first year, including Little Mix, the first (and to date, only) group to win the competition. On 16 March 2012, during a Twitter dispute with Dappy, Contostavlos announced that N-Dubz had split up, and were not taking a break as stated in 2011. Contostavlos released her debut solo album, The Female Boss, on 3 December 2012. It received unfavorable reviews from contemporary music critics and poor first-week sales. However, its lead single "Young" managed to top the UK Singles Chart.
Sheikh (pronounced /ˈʃeɪk/ SHAYK or /ˈʃiːk/ SHEEK; Arabic: شيخ šayḫ [ʃæjx], mostly pronounced [ʃeːx], plural شيوخ šuyūḫ [ʃuju:x])—also transliterated Sheik, Shaik, Shayk, Shaykh, Shaikh, Cheikh, and Shekh— is an honorific title in the Arabic language. It commonly designates the ruler of a tribe, who inherited the title from his father. "Sheikh" is given to a royal male at birth, whereas the related title "Sheikha" is given to a royal female at birth. "Sheikh" also often serves as a title for prominent Islamic leaders or clerics.
The word in Arabic stems from a triliteral root connected with age and aging: ش-ي-خ, shīn-yā'-khā'. The term literally means a man of vast power, and nobility, and it is used strictly for the royal families of the Middle East. The title carries the meaning leader, elder, or noble, especially in the Arabian Peninsula within the Tribes of Arabia, where shaikh became a traditional title of a Bedouin tribal leader in recent centuries. Due to the cultural impact of Arab civilization, and especially through the spread of Islam, the word has gained currency as a religious term or general honorific in many other parts of the world as well, notably in Muslim cultures in Africa and Asia.
