Michele Ann Marie "Shelley" Fabares (/fæˈbreɪ/; born January 19, 1944) is an American actress and singer. Fabares is known for her roles as Donna Reed's daughter Mary Stone on The Donna Reed Show (1958–1963), and as Hayden Fox's love interest (and eventual wife) Christine Armstrong on the sitcom Coach (1989–1997). She was Elvis Presley's co-star in three films. In 1962, her recording of "Johnny Angel" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
Michele Ann Marie Fabares was born in Santa Monica, California. She is the niece of actress Nanette Fabray. Fabares began acting at age three, and at age 10 made her television debut in an episode of Letter to Loretta. After guest-starring on various television series, Fabares landed the role of Mary Stone in the long-running family sitcom The Donna Reed Show.
Her national popularity led to a recording contract and two "Top 40" hits, including "Johnny Angel (song)," which went to no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1962, and peaked at #41 in the UK. It sold over one million copies and was certified gold. Fabares left The Donna Reed Show in 1963 (she would return periodically until its end in 1966) to pursue a film career. She appeared in a number of motion pictures, including three Elvis Presley movies: Girl Happy (1965), Spinout (1966), and Clambake (1967), the most by any one actress. In two other 1960s movies, she played the love interest of Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits in Hold On! and of a young Hank Williams Jr. in A Time to Sing.
Johnny Angel is a 1945 film noir directed by Edwin L. Marin and written by Frank Gruber and Steve Fisher from the novel Mr. Angel Comes Aboard by Charles Gordon Booth. The movie stars George Raft, Claire Trevor and Signe Hasso, and features Hoagy Carmichael.
A merchant ship captain (George Raft) finds his father's ship – of the same line – derelict at sea, the entire crew having disappeared. From an unlisted passenger (Signe Hasso), the only survivor of the hijacking of the ship, he learns of a plot involving secret gold, and searches New Orleans for his father's murderer.
Although RKO had low expectations for the film it was an unexpected hit, earning the studio a profit of $1,192,000. Raft went on to make three more thrillers for RKO.
In many baby name books, Shelley is listed as meaning "From the meadow on the ledge" or "clearing on a bank" sometimes truthful and pretty. It is Old English in origin. As with many other names (Courtney, Lindsey, etc.), Shelley is today a name given almost exclusively to girls after historically being male. Shelley is also a transferred surname used by those in Essex, Suffolk and Yorkshire, particularly in settlements where a wood/clearing was beside a ledge or hillside.
Notable people with the name include the following.

Shelley Fabares talks with Bill Tush about her TV and Film Career and of course "Johnny Angel"
Today is Shelley Fabares' birthday, and we take a moment to send along best wishes and look back at her amazing television career that has spanned the decades. Perhaps best known for two roles on classic television series: playing Mary Stone, eldest daughter on The Donna Reed Show from 1958 to 1964 (with periodic returns in 1965), and news anchor Christine Armstrong on Coach from 1989-1997 (Emmy nominated for the role.) Along the way however, Ms. Fabares was busy in other singing and acting endeavors, with a surprise hit singing career (Johnny Angel, 1962), Elvis Presley movies in the mid 1960s and her television 'comeback' on the TV Movie 'Brian's Song' in 1971. But television weekly series was her strong suit and has provided success along the way over the decades. These many co-star...

-Words and Music by Johnny Tillotson
I cry myself to sleep each night
Wishing I could hold you tight
Life seems so empty since you went away
The pillow where you'd lay your head
Now holds my lonely tears instead
And it keeps right on a-hurtin' since you're gone
CHORUS
It keeps right on a-hurtin' every minute of the day
Every hour you're away I feel so lonely
And I can't help it, I don't think I can go on
And it keeps right on a-hurtin' since you're gone
They say a man should never cry
But when I see you passin' by
My heart breaks down and cries a million tears
You broke my heart and set me free
But you forgot your memory
And it keeps right on a-hurtin' since you're gone
