Meaning / Story behind the song:
When we first heard Rachel Platten's "Fight Song" we were inspired by its message. In a world where we too often talk about our differences, we have at least one thing in common. We all struggle. Not in the same way, nor at the same level, but we all want a fighting chance. And we all share in one gift: The will to make the most of our lives. To take what we've been given and turn it into something better could be considered the sentient measuring stick of success. But to do so seldom is simple and more often requires we fight. Not against each other. But against the current threatening to drown the ambition in us.
There is a tremendous purpose in struggle. It is when the struggle becomes so fierce that we must fight to swim or sink. John Newton, who penned "Amazing Grace," worked on a slave trader ship and condoned inhuman atrocities. As his ship was on the verge of being torn apart in a violent storm he called out for Grace. Once his feet were again planted on firm soil he determined to change. His covenant was written into these words,
"I once was lost, but now I'm found; was blind, but now I see."
Grace is the defining moment when we face and fight a monster poised to define us or destroy us.
This song and video for us were a struggle, but a beautifully defining one. We chose the Scottish culture to depict the dichotomy between Grace and struggle. Who else is tough enough and yet delicate enough to don a kilt in battle? And the Scottish pipe and drum are the ultimate conveyors of melody and cadence. One represents Grace, the other the indomitable fight. Our dream was to film one of the most iconic castles on the Earth, Eilean Donan Castle in Dornie, Scotland.

Fyrish monument, Evanton, Easter Ross was built in 1782 by Sir Hector Munro of Novar.
Munro served as a general in India and the monument is said to represent the Gate of Negapatam, a port in Madras, India, which General Munro took for the British in 1781.

Tippoo's Tiger
The death of a young Englishman named Munro carried off by a man-eating tiger in 1792 was the inspiration for some of the strangest artefacts in the collections of any museum.
Munro was the son of Sir Hector Munro, one of the East India Company's generals. His death was seen by Tippoo, sultan of Mysore as divine retribution against the British invaders. He commissioned the famous mechanical toy depicting a tiger mauling its victim, which contained an organ to reproduce the appropriate roars and screams, as well as play a tune. It was certainly a peculiar idea for a palace entertainment but then Tippoo was no ordinary prince.
It was Tippoo's tenacity, military prowess and the adoption of the tiger as his personal symbol that earned him the title of the 'Tiger of Mysore'. Tippoo's father, Haider Ali, a commander-in-chief who had usurped the throne of Mysore began a career of military expansion in South India. Together father and son involved the British in no less than four wars.
Tippoo succeeded the throne in a turbulent era when the European powers were seeing the rise of revolution, first in America and then in France. Tippoo's ambassadors visited the court of Louis XVI and received among other gifts this bust of the king. But French power in India was on the wain and Tippoo also sought allies in Turkey, Afghanistan and Iran and among other Indian rulers. The British east India Company had fielded some impressive generals and administrators notably Sir Robert Clive and Warren Hastings who defeated the French and made allies of powerful leaders like the Nazim of Hyderabad.

The British for decades, indeed centuries, had had commercial interests in India. Tipu was obviously a native ruler and resented the intrusion, a) of a foreign power and, b) what is more, of the infidel Christians and he was a Muslim, and he determined to lay down his life to rid his territories of what he saw as a usurping power and therefore I think conflict was indeed inevitable.

Well the main reason the British gave for their successful conquest, was related to the superiority of their civilisation, their technology of warfare their state craft, and Tippoo in a sense undermined all these myths not only because he often had British armies on the run, partly because he was a great moderniser and had very competent armies, his light cavalry were always capable of harrying and indeed did harry British troops. For all those reasons he was the obverse in a sense of the way the British presented themselves.
In 1780 at a time of shifting alliances Haider and Tippoo marched against the British with a huge army. Lieutenant Colonel Bailey with a detachment of 3000 troops was cut off en-route to join Munro's forces near Madras. The ensuing battle of Pollilur was a disaster for the British. Haider and Tippoo managed to concentrate their forces joining those of their French allies under Lally. They had superior numbers, their famous light cavalry, rockets and canon.

Sir Ector
Sir Ector /ˈɛktɔːr, -ər/, sometimes Hector, Antor, or Ectorius, is the father of Sir Kay and the foster father of King Arthur in the Arthurian legend. Sometimes a king instead of merely a lord, he has an estate in the country as well as properties in London. In The Once and Future King T. H. White says his lands lie in the "Forest Sauvage"; later writers have used this as well.
Ector appears in the works of Robert de Boron and the Lancelot-Grail Cycle, as well as later adaptations such as the Post-Vulgate Cycle and Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur. In these versions, Merlin takes Arthur from his biological parents King Uther Pendragon and Igraine, and brings him to Ector's estate. Merlin does not reveal the boy's true identity, and Ector takes him on and raises him with Kay as his own son. When Kay is old enough to be knighted, Ector's young ward serves as his squire.
Foreseeing Uther's death, Merlin arranges to have his sword (sometimes equated with Excalibur) magically set in a stone (or an anvil in a stone) so that only the rightful heir to the throne will be able to remove it. When Uther dies, a tournament is held in London to bring all potential heirs to the area, and Ector and sons attend. Kay breaks his sword during the tournament, and Arthur is determined to find him a new one (In The Once and Future King, Kay leaves his sword at the inn, but when Wart goes to fetch it, the inn is closed). He comes across the Sword in the Stone, not realizing what it is, and pulls it out easily. When he tells Kay where he got it, Kay tries to take credit for the miracle. Ector sees through the lie, however, and he and Kay are the first to swear fealty to the new king. Both are made Knights of the Round Table and remain loyal to King Arthur throughout his reign.

Hector Hugh Munro (18 December 1870 – 14 November 1916), better known by the pen name Saki, and also frequently as H. H. Munro, was a British writer whose witty, mischievous and sometimes macabre stories satirize Edwardian society and culture. He is considered a master of the short story, and often compared to O. Henry and Dorothy Parker. Influenced by Oscar Wilde, Lewis Carroll and Rudyard Kipling, he himself influenced A. A. Milne, Noël Coward and P. G. Wodehouse.
Besides his short stories (which were first published in newspapers, as was customary at the time, and then collected into several volumes), he wrote a full-length play, The Watched Pot, in collaboration with Charles Maude; two one-act plays; a historical study, The Rise of the Russian Empire, the only book published under his own name; a short novel, The Unbearable Bassington; the episodic The Westminster Alice (a parliamentary parody of Alice in Wonderland); and When William Came, subtitled A Story of London Under the Hohenzollerns, a fantasy about a future German invasion and occupation of Britain.

Fyrish Monument
The Fyrish Monument is a monument built in 1782 on Fyrish Hill (Cnoc Fyrish), in Fyrish near Alness, Easter Ross, Scotland, on the orders of Sir Hector Munro, 8th of Novar, a native lord of the area who had served in India as a general. As the local population were being cleared off their land, employment was a problem and so it was built to give the locals some work. It was said that Sir Hector rolled stones from the top of the hill to the bottom, thereby extending the amount of time worked and paying the laborers for additional hours.
It represents the Gate of Negapatam, a port in Madras, India, which General Munro took for the British in 1781. It is visible from almost anywhere in the parishes of Kiltearn and Alness.
The site of the monument provides an extensive view over the Cromarty Firth and beyond, and Ben Wyvis can be seen clearly, especially impressive if snow-covered. A path to the top starts at a car park northeast of the hill at OS grid NH627715.

Tippoo's Tiger The death of a young Englishman named Munro carried off by a man-eating tiger in 1792 was the inspiration for some of the strangest artefacts in the collections of any museum. Munro was the son of Sir Hector Munro, one of the East India Company's generals. His death was seen by Tippoo, sultan of Mysore as divine retribution against the British invaders. He commissioned the famous mechanical toy depicting a tiger mauling its victim, which contained an organ to reproduce the appropriate roars and screams, as well as play a tune. It was certainly a peculiar idea for a palace entertainment but then Tippoo was no ordinary prince. It was Tippoo's tenacity, military prowess and the adoption of the tiger as his personal symbol that earned him the title of the 'Tiger of Mysore'. Tippoo's father, Haider Ali, a commander-in-chief who had usurped the throne of Mysore began a career of military expansion in South India. Together father and son involved the British in no less than four wars. Tippoo succeeded the throne in a turbulent era when the European powers were seeing the rise of revolution, first in America and then in France. Tippoo's ambassadors visited the court of Louis XVI and received among other gifts this bust of the king. But French power in India was on the wain and Tippoo also sought allies in Turkey, Afghanistan and Iran and among other Indian rulers. The British east India Company had fielded some impressive generals and administrators notably Sir Robert Clive and Warren Hastings who defeated the French and made allies of powerful leaders like the Nazim of Hyderabad. Anne Buddle The British for decades, indeed centuries, had had commercial interests in India. Tipu was obviously a native ruler and resented the intrusion, a) of a foreign power and, b) what is more, of the infidel Christians and he was a Muslim, and he determined to lay down his life to rid his territories of what he saw as a usurping power and therefore I think conflict was indeed inevitable. Dr Rajnarayan Chandavarkar Well the main reason the British gave for their successful conquest, was related to the superiority of their civilisation, their technology of warfare their state craft, and Tippoo in a sense undermined all these myths not only because he often had British armies on the run, partly because he was a great moderniser and had very competent armies, his light cavalry were always capable of harrying and indeed did harry British troops. For all those reasons he was the obverse in a sense of the way the British presented themselves. In 1780 at a time of shifting alliances Haider and Tippoo marched against the British with a huge army. Lieutenant Colonel Bailey with a detachment of 3000 troops was cut off en-route to join Munro's forces near Madras. The ensuing battle of Pollilur was a disaster for the British. Haider and Tippoo managed to concentrate their forces joining those of their French allies under Lally. They had superior numbers, their famous light cavalry, rockets and canon. -

Here's a lovely piece of classic TV from 1962 that was rebroadcast to mark the passing of the legendary producer/Writer Philip Mackie in 1985 - Saki -The Improper Stories of H. H. Munro - Granada TV - 1962. In 1962 Granada TV Network Productions presented 8 plays under the banner Saki, The Improper Stories of H. H. Munro (Hector Hugh Munro, better known by the pen name Saki, was a British writer whose witty, mischievous and sometimes macabre stories satirised Edwardian society and culture and he is considered a master of the short story). The stories were adapted by Hugh Leonard, Edward Boyd and Gerald Savory and directed by Silvio Narizzano. Produced by Philip Mackie. The main cast included Martita Hunt, Fenella Fielding, William Mervyn and Richard Vernon. Writing in the book Granada Television The First Generation, John Cox, former Executive Drama Producer for Granada writes: 'Although Granada's commitment to drama first of all meant television adaptations of stage plays, there were soon a respectable number of original plays in production...often in the form of series: the short stories of Saki and de Maupassant, the Feydeau farces and the Victorian melodramas. The audience were offered the security of a known quantity each week, because each story was self-contained.' Norman Frisby, who was Press Officer at Granada from 1959 to 1988 remembered that when the Drama Department came up with the series of legendary short stories and decided to bill them as The Improper Stories of H. H. Munro, actually the literary title, TV Times "...hit the roof. 'You can't do that,' bleated the billings sub. 'It'll make them sound like dirty stories.' 'We insist,' I insisted. TV Times cut the line but only for the first week or two.' Unfortunately, there appears to be very little information available on the series (all the stories that were adapted) and even the individual episodes seemed to lack a story synopsis or even a title (other than 'First programme', 'Second Programme', etc.) on the pages of the TV Times magazines (see example in side column) the weeks the episodes were shown. In the Highlands of Scotland, near Inverness, is a monument called the Fyrish monument. Built in 1782 on Fyrish Hill, in Fyrish near Alness, Easter Ross, Scotland, on the orders of Sir Hector Munro, 8th of Novar, a native lord of the area. As the local population were being cleared off their land, employment was a problem and so it was built to give the locals some work. It was said that Sir Hector rolled stones from the top of the hill to the bottom, thereby extending the amount of time worked and paying the labourers for additional hours. It represents the Gate of Negapatam, a port in Madras, India, which General Munro took for the British in 1781. It is visible from almost anywhere in the parishes of Kiltearn and Alness. The site of the monument provides an extensive view over the Cromarty Firth and beyond, and Ben Wyvis can be seen clearly. -

The current town was founded in the early nineteenth century by Alexander Fraser of Inchcoulter Balconie who named it after his son Evan, but the core of the village buildings date from the Victorian era. The Fyrish Monument is a monument built in 1782 , on the orders of Sir Hector Munro, 8th of Novar, a native lord of the area who had served in India as a general. As the local population were being cleared off their land, employment was a problem and so it was built to give the locals some work. It was said that Sir Hector rolled stones from the top of the hill to the bottom, thereby extending the amount of time worked and paying the labourers for additional hours. In 1860, the Highland Railway decided to construct a railway line going from Inverness through Easter Ross. The line was completed by 1862, and the following year, on 23 May 1863, Evanton gained its own railway station. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day. -

The Fyrish Monument is a monument built in 1782 , on the orders of Sir Hector Munro, 8th of Novar, a native lord of the area who had served in India as a general. As the local population were being cleared off their land, employment was a problem and so it was built to give the locals some work. It was said that Sir Hector rolled stones from the top of the hill to the bottom, thereby extending the amount of time worked and paying the labourers for additional hours. Meaning / Story behind the song:
When we first heard Rachel Platten's "Fight Song" we were inspired by its message. In a world where we too often talk about our differences, we have at least one thing in common. We all struggle. Not in the same way, nor at the same level, but we all want a fighting chance. And we all share in one gift: The will to make the most of our lives. To take what we've been given and turn it into something better could be considered the sentient measuring stick of success. But to do so seldom is simple and more often requires we fight. Not against each other. But against the current threatening to drown the ambition in us.
There is a tremendous purpose in struggle. It is when the struggle becomes so fierce that we must fight to swim or sink. John Newton, who penned "Amazing Grace," worked on a slave trader ship and condoned inhuman atrocities. As his ship was on the verge of being torn apart in a violent storm he called out for Grace. Once his feet were again planted on firm soil he determined to change. His covenant was written into these words,
"I once was lost, but now I'm found; was blind, but now I see."
Grace is the defining moment when we face and fight a monster poised to define us or destroy us.
This song and video for us were a struggle, but a beautifully defining one. We chose the Scottish culture to depict the dichotomy between Grace and struggle. Who else is tough enough and yet delicate enough to don a kilt in battle? And the Scottish pipe and drum are the ultimate conveyors of melody and cadence. One represents Grace, the other the indomitable fight. Our dream was to film one of the most iconic castles on the Earth, Eilean Donan Castle in Dornie, Scotland.

The death of a young Englishman named Munro carried off by a man-eating tiger in 1792 was the inspiration for some of the strangest artefacts in the collections of any museum.
Munro was the son of Sir Hector Munro, one of the East India Company's generals. His death was seen by Tippoo, sultan of Mysore as divine retribution against the British invaders. He commissioned the famous mechanical toy depicting a tiger mauling its victim, which contained an organ to reproduce the appropriate roars and screams, as well as play a tune. It was certainly a peculiar idea for a palace entertainment but then Tippoo was no ordinary prince.
It was Tippoo's tenacity, military prowess and the adoption of the tiger as his personal symbol that earned him the title of the 'Tiger of Mysore'. Tippoo's father, Haider Ali, a commander-in-chief who had usurped the throne of Mysore began a career of military expansion in South India. Together father and son involved the British in no less than four wars.
Tippoo succeeded the throne in a turbulent era when the European powers were seeing the rise of revolution, first in America and then in France. Tippoo's ambassadors visited the court of Louis XVI and received among other gifts this bust of the king. But French power in India was on the wain and Tippoo also sought allies in Turkey, Afghanistan and Iran and among other Indian rulers. The British east India Company had fielded some impressive generals and administrators notably Sir Robert Clive and Warren Hastings who defeated the French and made allies of powerful leaders like the Nazim of Hyderabad.

The British for decades, indeed centuries, had had commercial interests in India. Tipu was obviously a native ruler and resented the intrusion, a) of a foreign power and, b) what is more, of the infidel Christians and he was a Muslim, and he determined to lay down his life to rid his territories of what he saw as a usurping power and therefore I think conflict was indeed inevitable.

Well the main reason the British gave for their successful conquest, was related to the superiority of their civilisation, their technology of warfare their state craft, and Tippoo in a sense undermined all these myths not only because he often had British armies on the run, partly because he was a great moderniser and had very competent armies, his light cavalry were always capable of harrying and indeed did harry British troops. For all those reasons he was the obverse in a sense of the way the British presented themselves.
In 1780 at a time of shifting alliances Haider and Tippoo marched against the British with a huge army. Lieutenant Colonel Bailey with a detachment of 3000 troops was cut off en-route to join Munro's forces near Madras. The ensuing battle of Pollilur was a disaster for the British. Haider and Tippoo managed to concentrate their forces joining those of their French allies under Lally. They had superior numbers, their famous light cavalry, rockets and canon.

Here's a lovely piece of classic TV from 1962 that was rebroadcast to mark the passing of the legendary producer/Writer Philip Mackie in 1985 - Saki -The Improper Stories of H. H. Munro - Granada TV - 1962.
In 1962 Granada TV Network Productions presented 8 plays under the banner Saki, The Improper Stories of H. H. Munro (Hector Hugh Munro, better known by the pen name Saki, was a British writer whose witty, mischievous and sometimes macabre stories satirised Edwardian society and culture and he is considered a master of the short story).
The stories were adapted by Hugh Leonard, Edward Boyd and Gerald Savory and directed by Silvio Narizzano. Produced by Philip Mackie. The main cast included Martita Hunt, Fenella Fielding, William Mervyn and Richard Vernon. Writing in the book Granada Television The First Generation, John Cox, former Executive Drama Producer for Granada writes: 'Although Granada's commitment to drama first of all meant television adaptations of stage plays, there were soon a respectable number of original plays in production...often in the form of series: the short stories of Saki and de Maupassant, the Feydeau farces and the Victorian melodramas. The audience were offered the security of a known quantity each week, because each story was self-contained.' Norman Frisby, who was Press Officer at Granada from 1959 to 1988 remembered that when the Drama Department came up with the series of legendary short stories and decided to bill them as The Improper Stories of H. H. Munro, actually the literary title, TV Times "...hit the roof. 'You can't do that,' bleated the billings sub. 'It'll make them sound like dirty stories.'
'We insist,' I insisted.
TV Times cut the line but only for the first week or two.'
Unfortunately, there appears to be very little information available on the series (all the stories that were adapted) and even the individual episodes seemed to lack a story synopsis or even a title (other than 'First programme', 'Second Programme', etc.) on the pages of the TV Times magazines (see example in side column) the weeks the episodes were shown. It is known that the following were adapted for television: The Stampeding of Lady Bastable, A Holiday Task, The Way to the Dairy, Sredni Vashtar and A Defensive Diamond.

As the local population were being cleared off their land, employment was a problem and so it was built to give the locals some work. It was said that Sir Hector rolled stones from the top of the hill to the bottom, thereby extending the amount of time worked and paying the labourers for additional hours.
It represents the Gate of Negapatam, a port in Madras, India, which General Munro took for the British in 1781. It is visible from almost anywhere in the parishes of Kiltearn and Alness.
The site of the monument provides an extensive view over the Cromarty Firth and beyond, and Ben Wyvis can be seen clearly.

The Fyrish Monument is a monument built in 1782 , on the orders of Sir Hector Munro, 8th of Novar, a native lord of the area who had served in India as a general. As the local population were being cleared off their land, employment was a problem and so it was built to give the locals some work. The line was completed by 1862, and the following year, on 23 May 1863, Evanton gained its own railway station. Tipu's Tiger - Part 1
Tippoo's Tiger The death of a young Englishman named Munro carried off by a man-eating tiger in 1792 was the inspiration for some of the strangest artefacts in the collections of any museum. Munro was the son of Sir Hector Munro, one of the East India Company's generals. His death was seen by Tippoo, sultan of Mysore as divine retribution against the British invaders. He commissioned the famous mechanical toy depicting a tiger mauling its victim, which contained an organ to reproduce the appropriate roars and screams, as well as play a tune. It was certainly a peculiar idea for a palace entertainment but then Tippoo was no ordinary prince. It was Tippoo's tenacity, military prowess and the adoption of the tiger as his personal symbol that earned him the title of the 'Tiger of Mysore'....

Meaning / Story behind the song:
When we first heard Rachel Platten's "Fight Song" we were inspired by its message. In a world where we too often talk about our differences, we have at least one thing in common. We all struggle. Not in the same way, nor at the same level, but we all want a fighting chance. And we all share in one gift: The will to make the most of our lives. To take what we've been given and turn it into something better could be considered the sentient measuring stick of success. But to do so seldom is simple and more often requires we fight. Not against each other. But against the current threatening to drown the ambition in us.
There is a tremendous purpose in struggle. It is when the struggle becomes so fierce that we must fight to swim or sink. John Newton, who penned "Amazing Grace," worked on a slave trader ship and condoned inhuman atrocities. As his ship was on the verge of being torn apart in a violent storm he called out for Grace. Once his feet were again planted on firm soil he determined to change. His covenant was written into these words,
"I once was lost, but now I'm found; was blind, but now I see."
Grace is the defining moment when we face and fight a monster poised to define us or destroy us.
This song and video for us were a struggle, but a beautifully defining one. We chose the Scottish culture to depict the dichotomy between Grace and struggle. Who else is tough enough and yet delicate enough to don a kilt in battle? And the Scottish pipe and drum are the ultimate conveyors of melody and cadence. One represents Grace, the other the indomitable fight. Our dream was to film one of the most iconic castles on the Earth, Eilean Donan Castle in Dornie, Scotland.

The death of a young Englishman named Munro carried off by a man-eating tiger in 1792 was the inspiration for some of the strangest artefacts in the collections of any museum.
Munro was the son of Sir Hector Munro, one of the East India Company's generals. His death was seen by Tippoo, sultan of Mysore as divine retribution against the British invaders. He commissioned the famous mechanical toy depicting a tiger mauling its victim, which contained an organ to reproduce the appropriate roars and screams, as well as play a tune. It was certainly a peculiar idea for a palace entertainment but then Tippoo was no ordinary prince.
It was Tippoo's tenacity, military prowess and the adoption of the tiger as his personal symbol that earned him the title of the 'Tiger of Mysore'. Tippoo's father, Haider Ali, a commander-in-chief who had usurped the throne of Mysore began a career of military expansion in South India. Together father and son involved the British in no less than four wars.
Tippoo succeeded the throne in a turbulent era when the European powers were seeing the rise of revolution, first in America and then in France. Tippoo's ambassadors visited the court of Louis XVI and received among other gifts this bust of the king. But French power in India was on the wain and Tippoo also sought allies in Turkey, Afghanistan and Iran and among other Indian rulers. The British east India Company had fielded some impressive generals and administrators notably Sir Robert Clive and Warren Hastings who defeated the French and made allies of powerful leaders like the Nazim of Hyderabad.

The British for decades, indeed centuries, had had commercial interests in India. Tipu was obviously a native ruler and resented the intrusion, a) of a foreign power and, b) what is more, of the infidel Christians and he was a Muslim, and he determined to lay down his life to rid his territories of what he saw as a usurping power and therefore I think conflict was indeed inevitable.

Well the main reason the British gave for their successful conquest, was related to the superiority of their civilisation, their technology of warfare their state craft, and Tippoo in a sense undermined all these myths not only because he often had British armies on the run, partly because he was a great moderniser and had very competent armies, his light cavalry were always capable of harrying and indeed did harry British troops. For all those reasons he was the obverse in a sense of the way the British presented themselves.
In 1780 at a time of shifting alliances Haider and Tippoo marched against the British with a huge army. Lieutenant Colonel Bailey with a detachment of 3000 troops was cut off en-route to join Munro's forces near Madras. The ensuing battle of Pollilur was a disaster for the British. Haider and Tippoo managed to concentrate their forces joining those of their French allies under Lally. They had superior numbers, their famous light cavalry, rockets and canon.

In 1962 Granada TV Network Productions presented 8 plays under the banner Saki, The Improper Stories of H. H. Munro (Hector Hugh Munro, better known by the pen name Saki, was a British writer whose witty, mischievous and sometimes macabre stories satirised Edwardian society and culture and he is considered a master of the short story).
The stories were adapted by Hugh Leonard, Edward Boyd and Gerald Savory and directed by Silvio Narizzano. Produced by Philip Mackie. The main cast included Martita Hunt, Fenella Fielding, William Mervyn and Richard Vernon. Writing in the book Granada Television The First Generation, John Cox, former Executive Drama Producer for Granada writes: 'Although Granada's commitment to drama first of all meant television adaptations of stage plays, there were soon a respectable number of original plays in production...often in the form of series: the short stories of Saki and de Maupassant, the Feydeau farces and the Victorian melodramas. The audience were offered the security of a known quantity each week, because each story was self-contained.' Norman Frisby, who was Press Officer at Granada from 1959 to 1988 remembered that when the Drama Department came up with the series of legendary short stories and decided to bill them as The Improper Stories of H. H. Munro, actually the literary title, TV Times "...hit the roof. 'You can't do that,' bleated the billings sub. 'It'll make them sound like dirty stories.'
'We insist,' I insisted.
TV Times cut the line but only for the first week or two.'
Unfortunately, there appears to be very little information available on the series (all the stories that were adapted) and even the individual episodes seemed to lack a story synopsis or even a title (other than 'First programme', 'Second Programme', etc.) on the pages of the TV Times magazines (see example in side column) the weeks the episodes were shown. It is known that the following were adapted for television: The Stampeding of Lady Bastable, A Holiday Task, The Way to the Dairy, Sredni Vashtar and A Defensive Diamond.

Munro, was a British writer whose witty, mischievous and sometimes macabre stories satirize Edwardian society and culture. He is considered a master of the short story, and often compared to O. Henry and Dorothy Parker. Influenced by Oscar Wilde, Lewis Carroll and Rudyard Kipling, he himself influenced A. A. Milne, Noël Coward and P. G. Wodehouse.[1]

In the Highlands of Scotland, near Inverness, is a monument called the Fyrish monument.
Built in 1782 on Fyrish Hill, in Fyrish near Alness, Easter Ross, Scotland, on the orders of Sir Hector Munro, 8th of Novar, a native lord of the area. As the local population were being cleared off their land, employment was a problem and so it was built to give the locals some work. It was said that Sir Hector rolled stones from the top of the hill to the bottom, thereby extending the amount of time worked and paying the labourers for additional hours.
It represents the Gate of Negapatam, a port in Madras, India, which General Munro took for the British in 1781. It is visible from almost anywhere in the parishes of Kiltearn and Alness.
The site of the monument provides an extensive view over the Cromarty Firth and beyond, and Ben Wyvis can be seen clearly.

On his return to England he immediately sets about taking stock of all legal matters concerning his new property, but during these dealings Sir Richard seems to be more than a little distracted, he hears strange noises from the ash tree outside his bedroom window.

Writing in the book Granada Television The First Generation, John Cox, former Executive Drama Producer for Granada writes: 'Although Granada's commitment to drama first of all meant television adaptations of stage plays, there were soon a respectable number of original plays in production...often in the form of series: the short stories of Saki and de Maupassant, the Feydeau farces and the Victorian melodramas. The audience were offered the security of a known quantity each week, because each story was self-contained.' Norman Frisby, who was Press Officer at Granada from 1959 to 1988 remembered that when the Drama Department came up with the series of legendary short stories and decided to bill them as The Improper Stories of H. H. Munro, actually the literary title, TV Times "...hit the roof. 'You can't do that,' bleated the billings sub. 'It'll make them sound like dirty stories.'
'We insist,' I insisted.
TV Times cut the line but only for the first week or two.'
Unfortunately, there appears to be very little information available on the series (all the stories that were adapted) and even the individual episodes seemed to lack a story synopsis or even a title (other than 'First programme', 'Second Programme', etc.) on the pages of the TV Times magazines (see example in side column) the weeks the episodes were shown. The stories were adapted by Hugh Leonard, Edward Boyd and Gerald Savory and directed by Silvio Narizzano. Produced by Philip Mackie. The main cast included Martita Hunt, Fenella Fielding, William Mervyn and Richard Vernon. Nigel Hector Munro Stock (21 September 1919 – 23 June 1986) was an English actor of stage, screen, radio and television, who played major character roles in many films and television dramas.Stock was born in Malta, the son of an Army captain. He grew up in India before attending St Paul's School, London and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he earned the Leverhulme Exhibition, Northcliffe Scholarship, and the Principal's Medal.
He made his stage debut in 1931, and during his career achieved numerous classical and contemporary credits at various distinguished theatres, including the Old Vic and on Broadway, with productions of The Winter's Tale, Macbeth, She Stoops to Conquer, Uncle Vanya. His start in films came with uncredited bit parts in The Man Who Could Work Miracles (1938) and Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939). In 1937 he made his first credited film appearance in Lancashire Luck.
His acting career was interrupted by wartime service between 1939 and 1945 with the London Irish Rifles and the Assam Regiment of the Indian Army in Burma, China and Kohima. He was honourably discharged with the rank of Major, having twice been mentioned in despatches.
His film appearances included popular releases such as Brighton Rock (1947), The Dam Busters (1955), The Great Escape (1963), The Lion in Winter and The Lost Continent (both 1968), and Russian Roulette (1975).
Between 1964 and 1968, Nigel Stock became a household name in the UK for his portrayal of Dr. Watson in a series of Sherlock Holmes dramas for BBC television. Later in life, he portrayed the mentor of Sherlock Holmes in Young Sherlock Holmes. His other numerous television credits included Danger Man (1965), The Avengers (1964 & 1966), The Prisoner (1967), Owen MD (1971–73), Quiller (1975), Van der Valk (1977), Doctor Who (1982), Yes Minister (1982), Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1979) and for the BBC A Tale of Two Cities 1980 television series as well as The Pickwick Papers (1985) as Mr. Pickwick.
Stock and his third wife, Richenda Carey, had just appeared together on stage in the world premiere of Mumbo Jumbo in May 1986, when, on 23 June 1986, he died in London of a heart attack, aged 66.

For me, ‘honourable’ does not roll well on my tongue. Period! I would rather refer to senior males as 'sir'! The reference, 'sir", is simple, unaffected, unpretentious and from the bottom of my heart. ‘Honourable’ comes with a lot of baggage ... Meanings. Honour means high respect or great esteem ... Abuse ... Wordy ... "Sir, even when we report on the President, we don't use excellency!". Really? ... ....
