Colombia (/kəˈlʌmbiə/ kə-LUM-biə or /kəˈlɒmbiə/ kə-LOM-biə; Spanish: [koˈlombja]), officially the Republic of Colombia (Spanish: República de Colombia ), is a country situated in the northwest of South America, bordered to the northwest by Panama; to the east by Venezuela and Brazil; to the south by Ecuador and Peru; and it shares maritime limits with Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Jamaica, Dominican Republic and Haiti. It is a unitary, constitutional republic comprising thirty-two departments.
The territory of what is now Colombia was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples including the Muisca, Quimbaya, and Tairona. The Spanish arrived in 1499 and initiated a period of conquest and colonization ultimately creating the Viceroyalty of New Granada, with its capital at Bogotá. Independence from Spain was won in 1819, but by 1830 "Gran Colombia" had collapsed with the secession of Venezuela and Ecuador. What is now Colombia and Panama emerged as the Republic of New Granada. The new nation experimented with federalism as the Granadine Confederation (1858), and then the United States of Colombia (1863), before the Republic of Colombia was finally declared in 1886.Panama seceded in 1903.

Enjoy scenes from the week-long Coffee Festival that includes parades, traditional dances, and a pageant that culminates with the crowning of the International Coffee Queen. You'll see the high-tech side of the coffee business, as scientists in the laboratories of the Colombian Coffee Federation develop more flavorful and disease-resistan...

Read the full story --> http://voc.tv/JYnPV9 Cocaine exports account for roughly 2.5 percent of Colombia’s GDP. That’s the equivalent of the mining industry’s share of the American economy. Exports of the drug are down—but it’s still an $8-billion-per-year business for Colombian traffickers. That’s plenty of incentive to keep production going no matter how hard the government cracks down. Over the last decade, America has given billions to the Colombian military to fight the narco-traffickers. In some ways it looks like the U.S. is getting bang for its bucks—Colombian authorities destroyed 2,356 labs in 2012, a serious dent in Colombia’s cocaine industry. But producers and traffickers of the drug are finding more creative ways to keep this lucrative business thriving. It’s like a never-e...

A charter meant to send to a message to the admin and tell him we cannot... no will not !! proceed like this. WE WANT OUR BELOVED GAME BACK!! The charter is the following: Starting today, most of the Country Presidents have agreed to stop ALL wars, and start a “rebellion” against developers of this game / admins. http://mantarayatravel.com/blog - Since I moved to Bogotá I´ve been fascinated by the subtle quirks of Colombian culture. I use my blog to keep track of the astonishing variety of culture, food, nature, music, activities, hotspots and everything else that I love so much about the magical wonderland that is Colombia. The thing that captivates me most about Colombia is its unmatched diversity. Yet despite such tremendous diversity there is one thing that everyone who visits Colombia agrees on; the friendliness and joy of the people is what most makes you want to stay.
Colombia is a country full of traditions, colors and festivities. A country with colorful carnivals, With deep religious traditions.
Cumbia is a music style that originated in Colombia's Caribbean coastal region. Cumbia began as a courtship dance practiced among the African slave population that was later mixed with European instruments and musical characteristics. Cumbia started in the northern coast of South America, what is now Colombia and Panama, mainly in or around Cartagena during the period of Spanish colonization. Spain used its ports to import African slaves, who tried to preserve their musical traditions and also turned the drumming and dances into a courtship ritual. Cumbia was mainly performed with just drums and claves
Soccer, or football, as it is known to fans around the globe, has been around since medieval times. It is considered the “king” of sports and it is perhaps the most popular one. Europeans introduced it to Latin America in the 1800’s and since then it has played a major role in its culture. This week "Americas Now" features an entrepreneur born in the Caribbean city of Santa Marta in Colombia. He grew up in Pescaito, a symbolic neighborhood known for being a “factory of footballers.” He is also a member of the symbolic Valderrama family - a Caribbean clan known for having represented Colombia in many tournaments, including the World Cup. Chicho Valderrama takes us on tour of his neighborhood while he shares the events that led him on a career from football to music.

A year ago, I did this ride with dad and remember thinking throughout the entire ride — "I have to show this to others". The riding is world class. A 500 mile circuit packed with paved twisties, rocky offroad, gigantic landscapes, warm people, unforgettable food, and rich Colombian culture. It has always bugged me that this side of Colombia is less known and much less traveled. Due to our turbulent past, much of this region remains unknown to the outside world and, as a rider, you get the feeling that you are rediscovering the ground for the first time. I'll now be taking a few friends from the Bay Area to this region in Feb 2017. Parque de los Nevados, Salento, Ibague. Here we come. Music: Youth Lagoon. July.

The “International Living” magazine ranked Colombia’s healthcare system third best in the world. However, many Colombians are not so eager to agree. The article caused a lot of controversy among people who struggle to receive even basic medical services. CGTN’s Michelle Begue reports.

This short documentary is a part of a feature-long documentary project under a working title "Peace & Coca". "Peace & Coca" portraits a community of coca growers in a remote Colombian village on one side, and a formerly incarcerated non-violent drug offenders in the US on the other. The goal of the film is to explore human struggle on both ends and to investigate whether the conventional approach of war on drugs is working, or only creates more suffering for people stuck in the middle. The documentary is supported by Open Society and Bertha Foundations.
The U.S. divorce rate is way over 50%. Reportedly, most American men hate their marriages to American women, "who have devolved into bitter, controlling, spiteful, fat, lazy, manipulative bitches who feel entitled to the good life at the expense of their husband's health, happiness and well-being." Claiming that feminism destroyed "real men" we focus on a few that have opted for foreign mail order brides and follow them to Colombia. Today's Medellin drug cartels are highly structured and run much like multinational corporations. But violent gangs operating in the city's slums provide the muscle; known as combos, they’ve carved Medellin into fiefdoms, imposing invisible borders between gang territory — borders that, when ignored, often get people killed. VICE News travelled to Medellin to meet gang members — along with top cartel leaders and assassins — who revealed the inner workings of the city's modern-day cocaine industry. British anti-narcotics officers have spoken openly for the first time about their mission in Colombia. Until now little was known about their work in the country. But speaking exclusively to the BBC, the National Crime Agency, often dubbed Britain's FBI, has revealed it is involved in intelligence and logistical operations, working closely with Colombian forces. Despite a recent rise in the production of cocaine, British officers insist they are making a difference in the so-called war on drugs. Our International Correspondent, Ian Pannell and cameraman Darren Conway were given exclusive access to officers working in Colombia. Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The United Nations announced in 2013 that Peru has overtaken Colombia as the world’s top producer of coca, the raw plant material used to manufacture cocaine. For the past two decades, Colombia has been virtually synonymous with cocaine. Now that Peru has become the global epicenter of cocaine production, the Andean nation runs the risk of becoming the world’s next great narco state. The Peruvian government is trying to crack down on the problem by ramping up eradication of coca plants, and devoting military and police resources to interdiction efforts. Despite the response — and a hefty amount of foreign aid devoted to combatting cocaine production — Peruvian coke is being consumed in the nightclubs of Lima and in cities ...

A narcotics trafficking submarine has been discovered by authorities in Colombia. It's believed the vessel is able to travel from Colombia to the coasts of Mexico. The submarine was found in a river in the state of Cauca, about 400 kilometres southwest of the capital Bogota. Authorities found weapons nearby, but said no one was arrested and no drugs were found when they made the discovery. Colombia has overtaken Peru to be the world’s largest producer of cocaine, according to newly-released information likely to dismay President Juan Manuel Santos and his American allies. The UN's latest figures show that last year Colombia grew more coca than Peru and Bolivia combined. In 2014 Colombia had 69,000 hectares of coca; Peru had 42,900 and Bolivia 20,400. The UN estimates that cocaine production will rise 52 per cent in 2015, after the government halted aerial spraying of the crop, citing concerns that the herbicides used may cause cancer. Experts also believe that the surge in cocaine planting is due to farmers believing that a peace deal with Farc rebels, due to be signed by March, will see benefits for those who abandon their coca crops. Jorgan Andrews, director of the narcoti...
Deep in the jungles of Colombia and Peru, Tim Scott and Will Decker of Travel the Road, are hot on the trail of cocaine traffickers. Their mission is to trace the drug trade to its source and minister the gospel to those involved in this violent industry. From river patrols to intense helicopter drop missions, Tim and Will follow anti-narcotics and special forces teams into battle against terrorist militias and cartel factions. Soon, the extreme dangers of the operations become all too real when they are ambushed on a mission and find themselves in the middle of a firefight. When the dust settles and captives are taken into custody the missionaries deliver the message of hope to the drug dealers, whose labs they just destroyed, and witness the power of the gospel in action. Filmed over four years, three Colombian filmmakers turn the camera on themselves as the violence in their country escalates - changing their lives forever. War Takes allows us a rare opportunity to enter the privileged world of the Colombian middle class. Surreal humour is never too far away; from jungle talks with guerrillas to elegant dinner parties, our characters show they cannot be judged in conventional left or right terms: their lives break through stereotypes, forcing us to reconsider our own preconceptions. For decades Colombia has existed in a state between legalism and lawlessness: this film gives unusual insight into the price its society has ended up paying. I initially planned to spend only 2 weeks in Colombia but I ended up staying for more than a month. Bogotá, Colombia's bustling capital city, is one of the best places to explore Colombian culture for the very reason that the city is full of Colombians from all over the country. In this video I check out the view from the top of Cerro de Monserrate, see the sights around Plaza de Bolívar, and travel to the small town of Zipaquirá, where I head deep underground to visit the famous Salt Cathedral, a cathedral carved out in the middle of a mountain.
Cartagena is easily one of the most beautiful cities in the world and one of Colombia's most popular cities to visit. In this video I wander the city's picturesque "Old Town," visit a museum dedicated to the city's history of inquisition and torture, and explore the underground tunnels beneath the massive fort, Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas.
Medellín, Colombia's second largest city, is a favorite amongst visitors to Colombia due to its amazing scenery, friendly people, and surprising number of sights to see throughout the city.

In November of last year I was invited to take photographs of children whose families are innocent victims of violence throughout Colombia and have had to flee their former homes or farms with simply the clothes on their backs. Not knowing what to expect or having any knowledge of what I was going to encounter on this journey into the mountains high above Medellin, Colombia I merely thought it was an opportunity to take photos of children living in poverty. I would discover another purpose once I arrived to a place called El Pinar. The journey into the mountains where the displaced families live would take me through a dangerous area of Medellin where there is currently a gang war and would not be safe to travel without a knowledgeable guide. It is not often that you get to meet a man who has personally taken more than 250 lives and was involved in the torture and murder of thousands more. It is even rarer to see such a man in broad daylight, in a city centre enjoying public adulation. John Jairo Velásquez Vásquez, a.k.a. Popeye, is a local celebrity in Medellin, Colombia. In the 80s, the city was home to Pablo Escobar’s infamous, and extremely powerful, drug cartel. Popeye was the kingpin’s ‘hitman’. The Medellin Cartel, which operated from the mid-1970s to early 1990s, reached its peak under Pablo Escobar when it became even more powerful than Colombia’s Government. It made tens of billions of dollars trafficking cocaine and committed tens of thousands of murders, many through terrorist attacks in Colombia. Pablo Escobar wa...

Pick a climate, and it's yours—if you find the light jacket weather of Bogotá cold, drive an hour down through the mountains and sunbathe next to the pool of your rented hacienda. If you don't want to sit still, head off into the Amazon or any of the country's other many inl...

I can make cocaine,
I just fell in love with a Cuban
I just love Colombia,
Always making bricks, me and Hector.
Teach them how to remix got me metratons,
Isabella, that’s her little sister
She loves me cause I know where them bricks came
I can serve you, I pour drinks, too.
But I can make cocaine,
I promise you I’ll never see you out of there
I fly back to Colombia
I always make a million out of run.
I can make cocaine,
I just fell in love with a Cuban,
I just love Colombia
And how we get ‘em in by a metraton.
I can make cocaine,
I just fell in love with a Cuban,
I just love Colombia
And how we get ‘em in by a metraton.
I can make cocaine,
It don’t take but eight minutes to make the whole
thing,
But have you selling metraton,
You can cut one for a million.
Let me go sitting on packs long distance
Put my stove in the bathroom, not the kitchen,
Walk in an then you see sixty pistols,
By any mean necessary about them bricks fool.
I was selling bricks since highschool,
Pour a long ride when I slap you
But I don’t sell dog food,
Fill out your application, come to brick school.
I can make cocaine,
I just fell in love with a Cuban,
I just love Colombia
And how we get ‘em in by a metraton.
I can make cocaine
I just fell in love with a Cuban
I just love Colombia
