Syria (i/ˈsɪ.rɪə/; Arabic: سوريا or سورية, Sūriyā or Sūrīyah), officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia. De jure Syrian territory borders Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest, but the government's control now extends to approximately 30–40% of the de jure state area and less than 60% of the population.
A country of fertile plains, high mountains, and deserts, Syria is home to diverse ethnic and religious groups, including Syrian Arabs, Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Kurds, Circassians,Mandeans and Turks. Religious groups include Sunnis, Christians, Alawites, Druze, Mandeans, Shiites, Salafis, and Yazidis. Sunni Arabs make up the largest population group in Syria.
In English, the name "Syria" was formerly synonymous with the Levant (known in Arabic as al-Sham), while the modern state encompasses the sites of several ancient kingdoms and empires, including the Eblan civilization of the 3rd millennium BC. Its capital Damascus is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. In the Islamic era, Damascus was the seat of the Umayyad Caliphate and a provincial capital of the Mamluk Sultanate in Egypt.
Bashar Hafez al-Assad (Arabic: بشار حافظ الأسد Baššār Ḥāfiẓ al-ʾAsad, pronunciation Levantine pronunciation: [baʃˈʃaːr ˈħaːfezˤ elˈʔasad]; born 11 September 1965) is the President of Syria, commander-in-chief of the Syrian Armed Forces, General Secretary of the ruling Ba'ath Party and Regional Secretary of the party's branch in Syria. On 10 July 2000, he was elected president succeeding Hafez al-Assad, his father, who had led Syria for 30 years and died in office a month prior. In both the Syrian presidential election, 2000 and subsequent 2007 election, Bashar Assad received votes in his favor in the upper 90th percentile in uncontested elections where other candidates were not permitted to run against him. On 16 July 2014, Bashar Assad was sworn in for a new seven-year term, after his victory in the controversial June presidential election against two regime sanctioned candidates, the first contested presidential election in Ba'athist Syria's history.
Assad graduated from the medical school of Damascus University in 1988, and started to work as a doctor in the army. Four years later, he attended postgraduate studies at the Western Eye Hospital, in London, specialising in ophthalmology. In 1994, after his elder brother Bassel was killed in a car crash, Bashar was recalled to Syria to take over Bassel's role as heir apparent. He entered the military academy, taking charge of the Syrian occupation of Lebanon in 1998. In December 2000, Assad married Asma Assad, born Akhras.
People & Power is a current affairs programme on Al Jazeera English which broadcasts once a week, on Wednesdays, and repeated throughout the week. The show is also shown on Al Jazeera America once a week on Thursdays.
Each half-hour programme features one investigative documentaries on an issue related to power from around the world. The programme occasionally has one-hour specials.
People & Power was launched on November 15, 2006 when Al Jazeera English launched.
The programme originally had a presenter. It was hosted by Shereen El Feki but she was replaced by a new presenter, Samah El-Shahat, a development economist, in March 2007. Juliana Ruhfus was the programme’s main reporter and occasional presenter. Her film on the ex-combatants in Liberia launched the programme the day Al Jazeera went on air.
The show introduced several regular slots. A series called ‘If I had the Power’ asked people in the street what they would do if they had the power of President of the United States George W. Bush for the day. Five minute long ‘Power of One’ films look at how one person has changed the lives of a community through their own actions. These slots are no longer shown.

Six years of war in Syria have had a devastating effect on millions of its people. One of the most catastrophic impacts has been on the country’s electricity network. Images from Nasa, obtained by BBC Arabic, show clearly how the lights have gone out during the course of the conflict, leaving people to survive with little to no power. Each timelapse frame shows an average of the light emitted at night every month from 2012, one year after the war began. They show that the areas where Syrians can turn lights on at night, power their daily lives and get access to life-saving medical equipment, have shrunk dramatically. Since September 30, 2015 Russia has been carrying out air strikes in Syria in support of its ally President Bashar al-Assad. The campaign has been relentless and growing in intensity, with Russian jets flying 444 combat sorties against more than 1,500 targets between February 10 and 16 alone. Moscow insists these attacks have only been aimed at fighters from ISIL and other "terrorist groups" such as al-Nusra Front. But monitoring groups, including the Violations Documentation Center and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, say thousands of non-combatants have also been killed or wounded. Amnesty International and others have said the bombings may be war crimes. Indeed, Amnesty has also cited consistent reports of second bombardments from planes returning to kill and injure res...

The restoration of Aleppo's main thermal power plant was underway, Wednesday, as engineers attempted to bring power back to the Syrian city, after militants sabotaged its machinery. SOT, Gais-Al Ahmar, Deputy General Director of thermal power plant (Russian): "There are five generators of the US production at the plant. Here, the terrorists destroyed all five generators. They used the same method, opened the roof [of the generator] and put some explosive and it blew up. We opened the window on the top from smoke, then there was a very big fire. They did not want the generator to work any more. So, their plan was clear - this generator should not function. There was fire, an explosion, we opened the windows, we looked at what eventually resulted. Now we are trying to fix something, we hope...

Travel video about destination Aleppo in Syria. Sturdy walls and gates protect the ancient historic city of Aleppo in Syria. The narrow lanes in the old town, and its many historic buildings, have retained all the character and charm of a mediaeval metropolis. The city has a flourishing economy which is mainly due to its favourable location at the junction of several important trading routes. In 1169 the Umayyade Mosque was re-built at the command of the Zengid monarch, Nureddin, but only its impressive forty five metre high minaret has survived to the present day. The Baits are true architectural gems of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, noble and often palatial-looking buildings that once belonged to the city’s elite classes. Today Aleppo shines out once again in the glory of its ...

Prior to the Syrian Conflict, Travel Tales visited the famed city of Aleppo, Syria losing themselves in a labyrinth of bustling passageways and chatting with merchants and locals. They described their experience a 'magical and memorable' and lucky for us they have gathered up some of their travel videos to share with all of us. So on behalf of Travel Tales, enjoy a excerpt of their time in Aleppo, once Syria's largest and most populated city which sits in the north-western portion of the country close to Turkey's southern boarder and one of the longest inhabited cities with some scholars claiming it dates back to the 6th millennium BC. While it's history is long and vast we offer just a glimpse of life in the ancient metropolis with their video. Video presented by TenMoreSteps Video cre...

Travel video about destination Palmyra in Syria. Set amid the desert savannah of Syria are the proud remains of the unique and mysterious metropolis of Palmyra. The legendary ancient city was built in this vicinity due to the existence of an oasis, Tadmur, and today around thirty thousand people live in the surrounding area. The shortest and fastest route from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia and Persia travels directly past the Tadmur Oasis thus it was only a question of time until an important trading post was founded there and later a flourishing cultural and economic centre developed. Close to the former Agora, the central square in which the city’s inhabitants held their weekly market since the first century A.D., is one of Palmyra’s architectural landmarks, the Tetrapylon. The Hadrian Gate was built in the second century A.D. and highlights the glorious past of this once important trading metropolis in the Near East.Flanked by columns, a majestic twelve hundred metre long avenue was once Palmyra’s main street. As with many of the city’s other buildings it also has an impressive theatre that dates back to the second century A.D. and was discovered in the 1950’s. For some years it has once again served as a place of entertainment as each spring it features a festival. Close to the Agora, once a farmer’s market, is Palmyra’s striking main landmark, the Tetrapylon that forms the junction between the main avenue and a side road that lead...

Take a tour of Ancient City of Bosra in Bosra, Syrian Arab Republic -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. The half-standing ruins of this dark-stoned city rise out of the southern Syrian landscape. Nearly deserted today, Bosra has a great deal of history from thousands of years of habitation by different cultures. The city is at least old enough to have appeared in historical documents from the fourteenth century BC. Early in the first millennium AD, Bosra became a part of the Roman Empire, which is the strongest influence seen at work in the ruins. Since then, it has been the territory of the Byzantine Empire and the Arabs who swept in during the seventh century. Among the ruined city's Roman and Christian structures, the fortified...

Over the last four years as the Syrian uprising has grown into a full-blown civil war, a sinister parallel conflict has been fought out in cyberspace, with combatants wielding bytes and software rather than guns as they have battled for supremacy on Syria's internet frontline. In this special investigation for People & Power, Juliana Ruhfus has been finding out why some experts believe Syria's electronic armies have been drawing up the blueprints for all wars of the future, conflicts that transcend traditional physical boundaries but which can be just as significant as those fought with tanks and missiles.
They called him ‘The Tyrant’ a decade before the Assad regime came to power in 1970. This is the story of Abdul Hamid Al Sarraj who used fear and torture to turn 1950s Syria into a police state. When Syria gained independence in 1946, it had an elected Parliament, multi-party politics, freedom of the press and the right to protest. But the army remained a force and there was a series of military coups. By 1955, the young officer Al Sarraj was making a name for himself, with his high conviction rates and sharp detective skills. He was put in charge of part of the Syrian Intelligence services and turned it into a major government tool that would shape the political character of the country for years to come. He introduced mass arrests, torture, limits on basic freedoms and targeted elite thi...

Previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group has announced its intention to reestablish the caliphate and has declared its leader, the shadowy Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the caliph. The lightning advances the Islamic State made across Syria and Iraq in June shocked the world. But it's not just the group's military victories that have garnered attention — it's also the pace with which its members have begun to carve out a viable state. Flush with cash and US weapons seized during its advances in Iraq, the Islamic State's expansion shows no sign of slowing down. ...

Westerners are joining the fight against ISIS, “They just want to kill Daesh (ISIS)," a former Marine says. As part of its latest Naked Truth documentary, Fusion’s Vytenis Didziulis travels to northern Syria to embed with the unpaid western volunteers signing up to fight the Islamic State. The fight against ISIS in Syria is led by the Kurdish YPG, the most powerful militia in the country. Over 40 per cent of YPG's members are female and known as YPJ. After the recent battlefield successes, Syrian Kurds have declared a radical feminist autonomous region known as the Federation of Northern Syria - Rojava.

Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe After two years the civil war in Syria shows no immediate sign of coming to an end. Though exact numbers are difficult to determine it is likely that hundreds of thousands of people have been injured or killed. Millions more have been displaced and communities across the country have been irremediably scarred by fighting that has seen homes, schools, businesses and hospitals destroyed. Yet those opposed to the Assad regime show no signs of faltering. Something keeps them at the front line - even though they are outgunned and often desperately short of everything from ammunition to medical supplies. At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. We brin...
Filmmaker: Suhaib Abu Doulah Since its independence from France in 1946, Syria has been rocked by periods of political instability. As the colonial hold of the great powers began to fade and the region witnessed a wave of Arab nationalism, Syria shifted through a succession of military coups. But in 1970, Hafez al-Assad, an ambitious minister of defence, seized control. Rising from a humble background in western Syria, he was to rule the country for 30 years. His was an autocratic one-party state in which any dissent was ruthlessly suppressed. Following the death of Hafez in 2000, father was succeeded by son - Bashar al-Assad took the reigns and a dynasty was born. In 2011, with the region in revolt, the al-Assad regime was challenged. The result is an ongoing civil war that has claim...
While policy debates on Syria have overwhelmingly focused on military developments and political negotiations, a less explored consequence of the hyper-localized war has been the profound reshaping of a less visible but crucial actor, the Syrian state. The conflict has induced a de facto renegotiation of the power balance between the central authority in Damascus—itself a traditionally centralized actor—and emerging local powers. Internally, this has led all players to invest at the local level in order to preserve (or establish) power. External actors have also contributed to this process of localization, though their military and humanitarian roles. The Carnegie Middle East Center—in partnership with the International Crisis Group—organized a public event on localization and self-admini...

It's time for dark
Now has come like fever
The shining of black mark
Shall provide the darkness forever
Bewithched worlds stay
The christianty pray
To their unexistent God
Praise hail the death of goat
Enlightened world
Now ask us for mercy
But life wilt not be
Wait and see
I see bloodred skies
And I shall see how last demon and angel shall die
The existence of life shall stop
We'll drink thy last blood's drop
Sacred blood....
These earths washed in clean angel's blood
The corpse of last arcangel lies here
Burned wings of demons blacken the soil
Life is dead , presence is unclear
