How to get your smashed avo and eat it too: Buy your own avocado farm

Australian housing affordability worsens
Low interest rates are fueling a high demand for housing despite tighter lending rules, says St. George Bank Senior Economist Janu Chan.

For those still figuring out how to have their house and maintain a daily avo-on-toast habit – here’s a simple solution – just buy an avo orchard.

The 675 trees in this one should do it – you’ll likely have plenty to send to market and maybe a few to give away as well. It could just be a chance to banish the dark threat of an avo-less future once and for all.

The grove here at Wolvi comes with an impressively rustic — perhaps some would even call it hipster — house of stone and wood, and is 15 minutes from the regional centre of Gympie and 40 minutes from both Rainbow Beach and café-endowed Noosa.

The three-bedroom homestead is modelled on the log homes the owners fell in love with on their trips to Canada and was built from timber grown on the property and locally sourced stone. It includes feature windows by glass artist Chris Pantano whose work features in Parliament House in Canberra and has been exhibited in Japan and Germany and the US.

Ray White Rural Queensland director Jez McNamara said the owners have run the avocado business as a sideline to their main work and the property includes five varieties of avo – Shepherd, Haas, Fuerte, Sharwill and Wurtz, plus a packing shed, a stone and timber garage, and an early squatter-style shed, all with three-phase power. There are three dams for irrigation throughout the orchard supplementing the region’s decent average rainfall.

The Wolvi area is a picturesque region in the Cooloola Coast hinterland known for its fertile land, established fauna, and macadamia and avo farms. The neighbours are berry growers.

In addition to the avo orchard, Sweet Haven is quite the self-contained food bowl, boasting a variety of other fruit trees including mango, orange, mandarin, lychee and pawpaw.

Oh, and there’s a herb garden too – for those days when you fancy a bit of basil or thyme on your smashed avo.

The first links between Australia’s housing affordability and smashed avo breakfasts came to light when columnist Bernard Salt wrote about the evils of the hipster café in The Australian last year and suddenly everyone had something to say. A week later #smashedavo was trending on social media across the land and thus the unlikely union settled in for the long haul.

It even prompted one Brisbane vendor to offer a year’s worth of free avo on toast with the sale of a townhouse.

And while we’re talking housing affordability, Wolvi compares well to the big smoke of Brisbane, and those big cities further south with all their hipster hoods, with a median price of $365,000.

Sweet Haven is open for inspection this Sunday from 10.30-11.30am and will go to auction on the morning of June 2.
