Singapore (i/ˈsɪŋɡəpɔːr/), officially the Republic of Singapore, and often referred to as the Lion City, the Garden City, and the Red Dot, is a global city in Southeast Asia and the world's only island city-state. It lies one degree (137 km) north of the equator, at the southernmost tip of continental Asia and peninsular Malaysia, with Indonesia's Riau Islands to the south. Singapore's territory consists of the diamond-shaped main island and 62 islets. Since independence, extensive land reclamation has increased its total size by 23% (130 km2), and its greening policy has covered the densely populated island with tropical flora, parks and gardens.
The islands were settled from the second century AD by a series of local empires. In 1819, Sir Stamford Raffles founded modern Singapore as a trading post of the East India Company; after the company collapsed, the islands were ceded to Britain and became part of its Straits Settlements in 1826. During World War II, Singapore was occupied by Japan. It gained independence from Britain in 1963, by uniting with other former British territories to form Malaysia, but was expelled two years later over ideological differences. After early years of turbulence, and despite lacking natural resources and a hinterland, the nation developed rapidly as an Asian tiger economy, based on external trade and its human capital.

When it started life as an independent, separate country in 1965, Singapore’s prospects did not look good. Tiny and underdeveloped, it had no natural resources and a population of relatively recent immigrants with little shared history. The country’s first prime minister, the late Lee Kuan Yew is credited with transforming it. He called one volume of his memoirs, “From Third World to First”. Why did Singapore become an economic success? First, its strategic location and natural harbour helped. It is at the mouth of the Malacca Strait, through which perhaps 40% of world maritime trade passes. It was an important trading post in the 14th century, and again from the 19th, when British diplomat Sir Stamford Raffles founded the modern city. Now it is at the heart of one of the world’s most...

When travelers come to Singapore, the number one thing to do is to find a local food court readily found everywhere and to just sit down and eat a large meal. That's exactly, what my friends Annabelle (Instagram _annabellel_ ) and Valerie did. First, we ate some rice cake looking thing wrapped up in a wax brown bag. Then we ate some laksa noodles and chased that away with some duck noodles. Then Annabelle surprised me with two plates of pork goodness. Wow, what a main event of food for sure. Simply delicious and rewarding, no doubt. So, if you're in Singapore, and wondering what to do in this city / state, then I highly recommend checking out the food courts. -------------------------------------------------- About Me: I'm Kyle Le and I live, travel, and eat in Vietnam and many Asian cou...

Singapore is a small city-state that likely isn't as well known to you as some of the other countries we've discussed before. But they've got one of the most fascinating health care systems around. It's cheap, it's pretty much universal, and it achieves some amazingly strong outcomes. It's also much different in structure than other systems we've covered before. Watch and learn - you'll be glad you did. If you want to learn more, there's pretty much only one book you need to read. It's short, it's awesome, and it's still free in Kindle format. It's called Affordable Excellence: The Singapore Health System, and you ...
Singapore healthcare begins with building a healthy population - to live well, live long and with peace of mind. Our healthcare financing system aims to ensure universal access to affordable and good quality care for all Singaporeans. It starts with generous government subsidies, and then is backed up by 3Ms - Medisave, MediShield, and Medifund. Over the years, we have also improved our medical services and care delivery system. We now enjoy good healthcare outcomes in the form of low infant mortality rates and high life expectancy rates. Patient safety and high professional standards continue to underpin our healthcare system. With the focus on holistic and integrated patient care, we are continually evolving our health policies and programmes to meet the changing needs of the...
Singapore delivers the best medical care in the world while spending 80% less than we do argues Sean Flynn, assistant professor of economics at Scripps College. While many people cite France and Canada's healthcare systems as alternative examples to the United States' system, Flynn, author of Economics for Dummies, wants us instead to set our sights on Singapore.

7219 started off as an idea of getting a miniature look at the ongoings of daily life in tropical Singapore. Armed with either my iPhone or a Panasonic LX3, I took to the tall buildings throughout the island and started location scouting in 2010. Production kicked off in 2011 with Canon 5D Mark IIs, 7Ds and the full armada of Canon TSE lenses. The 5D Mark III soon joined the party and was a great addition. Touted the load in a Osprey 35 litre backpack and 2 tripods (sometimes with a Gorillapod), I pounded the streets to the amusement of many locals. No big crews, just myself early on before my partner, Charmaine Yap came and stuck with me through every shoot. 7219 is not perfected and never will as I witness scenes everyday that can be included in the film. I have to thank Keith Loutit...

SINGAPORE: More Singaporeans are turning to private universities to save costs. They can obtain degrees from foreign universities with campuses in Singapore, or those that offer programmes through local institutions, at a fraction of the cost of studying overseas. 22-year-old Willard Tan, an undergraduate at East Asia Institute of Management, saves over S$50,000 a year by not choosing to study abroad. "For me, I'm saving about five times the amount of money studying here, which can be utilised in this current economy," he said. "We have seen an increase in local students' applications by more than 50 per cent over the past two years," said Lee Beng Choo, chief operating officer of PSB Academy. Another advantage is that private universities offer a faster route to obtaining a degree. Th...

PLAN YOUR SINGAPORE VACATION The main island of Singapore is shaped like a flattened diamond, 42 km (26 miles) east to west and 23 km (14 miles) north to south. Near the northern peak is the causeway leading to West Malaysia—Kuala Lumpur is less than four hours away by car. It is at the southern foot where you will find most of the city-state’s action, with its gleaming office towers, working docks, and futuristic "supertrees," which are solar-powered and serve as vertical gardens. Offshore are Sentosa and over 60 smaller islands, most uninhabited, that serve as bases for oil refining or as playgrounds and beach escapes from the city. To the east is Changi International Airport, connected to the city by metro, bus, and a tree-lined parkway. Of the island's total land area, more than half ...

In the course of refurbishment works ART+COM was commissioned to create a signature art installation for the Departure-Check-in hall of Terminal 1 at Singapore Airport. “Kinetic Rain” is composed of two parts, each consisting of 608 rain droplets made of lightweight aluminum covered with copper. Suspended from thin steel ropes above the two opposing escalators, each droplet is moved precisely and seemingly floating by a computer-controlled motor hidden in the halls ceiling. The drops follow a 15-minute, computationally designed choreography where the two parts move together in unison, sometimes mirroring, sometimes complementing, and sometimes responding to each other. We're all as mad as hatters here
I've fallen for a tawny moor
Took off to the land of Nod
Drank with all the Chinamen
Walked the sewers of Paris
I danced along a colored wind
Dangled from a rope of sand
You must say goodbye to me
We sail tonight for Singapore
Don't fall asleep while you're ashore
Cross your heart and hope to die
When you hear the children cry
Let marrow bone and cleaver choose
While making feet for children shoes
Through the alley
Back from Hell
When you hear that steeple bell
You must say goodbye to me
Wipe him down with gasoline
Till his arms are hard and mean
From now on boys this iron boat's your home
So heave away boys
We sail tonight for Singapore
Take your blankets from the floor
Wash your mouth out by the door
The whole town is made of iron ore
Every witness turns to steam
They all become Italian dreams
Fill your pockets up with earth
Get yourself a dollar's worth
Away boys, away boys, heave away
The captain is a one-armed dwarf
He's throwing dice along the wharf
In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is King
So take this ring
We sail tonight for Singapore
We're all as mad as hatters here
I've fallen for a tawny moor
Took off to the land of Nod
Drank with all the Chinamen
Walked the sewers of Paris
I danced along a colored wind
Dangled from a rope of sand
