Body found in drain identified as Gladstone man

The body of a man in his 30s has been removed from a stormwater drain in central Queensland.

The man's body was discovered on Gladstone Bernaraby Road in Toolooa, just south of Gladstone, on Thursday morning after local businesses reported a foul smell.

Specialist officers removed the body on Friday and used fingerprints to identify the man from Gladstone. Police said they would not release the man's name at this stage.

A Queensland Police spokesman said the circumstances surrounding the death would be investigated.

"There doesn't seem to be anything that points towards being suspicious, however that will be a matter for our investigators," he said.

"We will wait for the results of the autopsy before making any determination into the cause of death."

Detective Acting Inspector Luke Peachey said the body had most likely been there for at least a week and it could have washed down from other waterways.

"At the moment we're just trying to establish that," he said.

"We've got council engineers here at the moment and hopefully they'll give us a clearer idea of where this person may have come from," Acting Inspector Peachey told reporters on Thursday.
