The City and Borough of Sitka (Tlingit: Sheetʼká), formerly New Arkhangelsk, or New Archangel under Russian rule (Russian: Ново-Архангельск or Новоaрхангельск, t Novoarkhangelsk), is a unified city-borough located on Baranof Island and the southern half of Chichagof Island in the Alexander Archipelago of the Pacific Ocean (part of the Alaska Panhandle), in the U.S. state of Alaska. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,881. In terms of land area, it is the largest city-borough in the U.S., with a land area of 2,870.3 mi2 (7,434.1 km2) and a total area (including water area) of 4,811.4 mi2 (12,460.8 km2). Urban Sitka, the part that is usually thought of as the "city" of Sitka, is situated on the west side of Baranof Island.
The current name Sitka (derived from Sheet’ká, a contraction of the Tlingit Shee At'iká) means "People on the Outside of Baranof Island", whose Tlingit name is Sheet’-ká X'áat'l (here contracted to Shee).
Sitka's location was originally settled by the Tlingit people over 10,000 years ago. The Russians settled Old Sitka in 1799, calling it Redoubt Saint Michael (Russian: форт Архангела Михаила, t Fort Arkhangela Mikhaila). The governor of Russian America, Alexander Baranov, arrived under the auspices of the Russian-American Company, a colonial trading company chartered by tsar Paul I. In June 1802, Tlingit warriors destroyed the original settlement, killing many of the Russians, with only a few managing to escape. Baranov was forced to levy 10,000 rubles in ransom for the safe return of the surviving settlers.

Plot: Kenai, a man who resents bears after a fight with one kills his older brother, is turned into a bear so he can see life from a different perspective. He is visited by the spirit of his older brother, and is told that, if he wishes to be changed back into a human, he must travel to the place where the lights touch the Earth, in other words, the Northern Lights. Fueled by hope, Kenai sets off on his long journey, and, along the way, encounters a younger bear, Koda, who is a chatterbox and a fun-loving spirit; Koda is trying to find his way back to his home, the Salmon Run, which, coincidentally, is right next to where the lights touch the Earth. Koda and Kenai team up, but are hunted by Kenai's other brother, Denahi, who fears that the bear has killed Kenai as well. Along the way, the two bears meet other friends, including two moose, some rams, and some mammoths, with whom they hitch a ride. However, Kenai discovers that he likes being a bear, and realizes that humans aren't only afraid of bears; through Koda's eyes, the humans are the monsters, with their long spears. With a whole new view on life, Kenai makes a decision that will change his world forever.

The Alaska Purchase was the acquisition of Russian America by the United States from the Russian Empire in the year 1867 by a treaty ratified by the U.S. Senate. Russia wanted to sell its Alaskan territory, fearing that it might be seized if war broke out with Britain. Russia's primary activity in the territory had been fur trade and missionary work among the Native Alaskans. With the purchase of Alaska, the United States added 586,412 square miles (1,518,800 km2) of new territory. Reactions to the purchase in the United States were mixed, with opponents calling it "Seward's Folly", feeling that U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward, the primary American negotiator, got the worst of the bargain. This video is targeted to blind users. Attribution: Article text available under CC-BY-S...
Stewardship for the future means sustainable management today of land returned to Sealaska by ANCSA. Our land stewardship is guided by our Native values which require us to balance cultural, economic, environmental and social needs. Sealaska is perplexed by the insensitivity of the environmental organizations to the economic plight and historic treatment of Southeast Alaska's Native peoples. Conservation organizations are reacting to conservation issues without any understanding, much less empathy for the consequences to Native peoples who live in and depend on the forest for their livelihoods and their quality of life. Recently, a documentary entitled, "Musicwood" further perpetuates this insensitivity with outright falsehoods. The film trailer impolies about Sealaska, "they're going...
In Alaska, seafood is big business. Alaska produces more seafood than the other 49 United States combined. In fact, Alaska ranks as the twelfth largest seafood producing nation in the world. From the industrial fisheries of the Bering Sea...to the mom and pop operations on the Southeast troll grounds, commercial fishing is the economic glue that binds Alaska. Alaska's vast coastlines and nutrient rich waters sustain an enormous complex of marine resources, many of which are now at historically high levels of abundance. The marine wealth that characterizes Alaska exists today despite more than a century of intense exploitation by fishing fleets from around the world. Alaska's bounty is a tribute to the reproductive vitality of the state's marine environment, and to the effectiveness of ...

Isa and I went along with some family on a boating adventure in Sitka Alaska with Captain Mike on his Sitka Sea Roamer. We caught King Salmon, Halibut, and saw some whales and sea otters. It was an amazing trip and we had SO MUCH FUN! **This is NOT a sponsored video. All opinions, excitement, and general enthusiasm is real and my own. I've been out fishing (and hunting) with Mike a few times before. I love his boat and we always have a great time so I asked if I could film what a charter experience looks like on the Sitka Sea Roamer.** Fishing with Mike is fun and lighthearted. He's a great teacher and he explains everything thoroughly (I'm unashamedly a city boy to the core with no real experience) and he makes sure everyone has a great experience. There were 6 of us in a small motorized speed raft with our guide Ken (I think). We toured the many volcanic islands at varying speeds, while our guide told us a lot of fascinating information about the history, wildlife, and geography of the area, along with showing us colorful coves, caves, and animals we had never seen before. Then, off in the distance he saw some whale spouting. We raced at full speed toward the whale and continued to see more spouting and then some cresting. We came to a stop with the motor turned off and soon we saw some cresting, then Ken said that the tail of the Humpback Whale would be next. Sure enough, it happened and it was awesome

The first time I saw you standing in the water
You must have been all of a thousand feet tall
Nearly naked - unashamed like Herod's daughter
Your love was so big
It made New York look small
You've been the subject of so many dreams
Since I climbed your torso
My statue of Liberty
Boo Boo
Impaled on your hair
What do you do
Do Do to me
Boo Boo
I leaned right over to kiss your stoney book
A little jealous of the ships with whom you flirt
A billion lovers with their cameras
Snap to look and in my fantasy
