The Pantanal (Portuguese pronunciation: [pɐ̃taˈnaw]) is a natural region encompassing the world's largest tropical wetland area. It is located mostly within the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul, but it extends into Mato Grosso and portions of Bolivia and Paraguay. It sprawls over an area estimated at between 140,000 and 195,000 square kilometres (54,000 and 75,000 sq mi). Various subregional ecosystems exist, each with distinct hydrological, geological and ecological characteristics; up to 12 of them have been defined (RADAMBRASIL 1982).
Roughly 80% of the Pantanal floodplains are submerged during the rainy seasons, nurturing an astonishing biologically diverse collection of aquatic plants and helping to support a dense array of animal species.
The name "Pantanal" comes from the Portuguese word pântano, meaning wetland, bog, swamp, quagmire or marsh. By comparison, the Brazilian highlands are locally referred to as the planalto, plateau or, literally, high plain.
We came to the Pantanal to film jaguars in the wild - and we were not disappointed. But we were blown away by the diversity and abundance of wildlife in these little-known wetlands. Many of the animals we encountered are unique to this part of the world and new to us as wildlife photographers, including anteaters, armadillos, tapirs, capybaras, caimans, coatis, giant river otters and crab-eating raccoons. It is also host to some of the world's most beautiful birds, like the hyacinth macaw, jabiru, toucan, spoonbill, acari, little blue heron, curassow, caracara, ringed kingfisher and others.
The Pantanal of Brazil is the largest wetland in the world, and one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth. Enjoy this short high-definition production, featuring some beautiful shots of mother nature at her finest. With thanks to everyone at Fazenda Barranco Alto, who hosted me during this fantastic trip.

We're in Brazil to explore the nature and eco-tourism. Today we leave for Pantanal, which is one of the largest wetlands in the world. In Pantanal we are staying with Andre and Akhila, the owners of Araras Pantanal Eco Lodge. They explain to us how Eco-tourism works and how they are actually trying to work together with nature instead of draining it. To see the wildlife photos from the Pantanal visit my blog here: http://www.brendansadventures.com/visiting-pantanal-cuiaba-brazil I went into the Brazilian Pantanal in search of wildlife this week. In particular, I was looking for jaguars which are very elusive anywhere else on the planet. However, in this part of the Pantanal, and this time of year, jaguars are actually really commonly spotted. My guide, in fact said that we'd have about a 50/50 chance of seeing a jaguar. The day before I went, a group from the same company I went with (EcoVerde Tours: http://www.ecoverdetours.com.br) saw 3 jaguars. Unfortunately for me, I didn't see any. I did, however, see a tonne of wildlife in the Pantanal. We saw an ocelot as well which is amazing and even more rare than a Jaguar. Although,...
