NORTH KOREA has closed its borders in fear of the spread of the Ebola virus. But at a time when the secretive state was still welcoming tourists, former aid worker Andrew Macleod made the journey to the repressive nation. Andrew’s holiday snaps and camera footage provide a unique insight into the reclusive country, where he came across deserted motorways, metro stations plastered with propaganda and attractive border guards.

I've always been very interested in North Korea because it seemed to be one of the most unique and mysterious countries in the whole world. This is my day to day life throughout the 7 days that I spent in North Korea. You can never be sure whether things were staged or not in North Korea because you are only shown what they want you to see. You can't choose where or when you will be going to specific places, they simply tell you to hop on a bus and ask you to get off at one point or another.
That is why I didn't want to offer my opinion about whether things were staged or not, whether they were good or not, or honest or not. My goal was to show you what my day to day life looked like when I was there and let you make up your own mind and judge for yourself.
Do not judge North Korea only from what you see in this video. This is what they showed us and there's a reason they show some things and not show the others. Also, knowing how much control they exercise over the population, everything could have been staged only for us.

North Korea – a country ruled by a tyrant with it’s people living in a brainwashed, totalitarian world. It’s a huge contrast from it’s first-world, developed neighbors in the South.
It’s a strange thing that you can live and teach English in Seoul, have an amazing lifestyle and make good money in a safe and exciting city… An then drive an hour North and be at the most militarized border in the world.
Go ahead watch the video I made of me going to the eery Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and actually stepping over the border:
This was one of the highlights of my year in Korea.
It’s strange how few Koreans seem to do the tour of the border…
Perhaps it’s a little too painful as there is a deep longing in the collective unconscious of the South Koreans for the unification of the two halves of the Korean peninsular.
As a foreigner it helped me to understand the intense history of conflict the country has experienced.
The sad thing is Koreans are all one people and the splitting of their home led to the separation of thousands of families.
It also made me grateful the opportunity to live and teach in South Korea, where there is freedom of speech and a culture of kindness and generosity among the people.
One thing to note is that despite the conflict in the past and the close proximity to North Korea, right now South Korea is one of the safest countries in the world to live in.
There is a lot of flexing of muscles between the two but it’s not something you need to worry about if you decide to come teach here. You can go ahead and tell your family and friends, that no, going to Korea is not in immanent danger of nuclear war and that your decision to teach in Korea isn't a reckless one. ;)

Featuring... Foreign abduction zones - In the 1970s the founder of North Korea, Kim il Sung, ordered special camps to be built around the country. These camps began to be populated by young Japanese people. How did they get there? They were kidnapped by North Korean spies from towns on the Japanese coast, thrown in a sack and then transported on dinghies to the ‘invitation only’ zones. Fruit and fertiliser - Malnourishment is a massive problem in North Korea. During the 1990s, a huge famine hit the country and an estimated 3.7 million North Koreans died. Even today, it’s thought that 40% of North Koreans suffer from malnourishment. These things they believe - When a country’s population has virtually no contact with the outside world, you can tell them anything, and they’ll believe you. For example, most people inside North Korea are adamant that their former ’dear leader’ Kim Jong Il led a pretty exciting life. Get money - North Korea is officially the most corrupt country in the world. When nearly every country in the world refuses to do business with you, you have to get creative. That’s exactly what North Korea has done to try and make some money. Hairstyles and lifestyles - Life can be deadly dull in North Korea. If you’re a man, there are only 28 hairstyles, approved by the state, that you’re allowed to have. North Korean internet - Next time you think you’ve completed the internet, spare a thought for the North Koreans. Over there, the state controls the net, and it’s more like a company intranet than a world wide web. Class and caste - In most countries in the world there is some sort of class system, but nowhere is it as rigid as in North Korea. in 1957, leader Kim Il Sung ordered an investigation of the entire population, which led to the separating of everyone into 3 classes, based on family history rather than the individual person’s actions. 3 generations of punishment. - Talking of which, North Korea is big on punishing the whole family for the actions of one individual. If you commit a crime in North Korea, your children and your grandchildren will bear the stain of your action, and they will be punished too. Labour camps - In North Korea, If you commit a crime that isn’t punishable by execution, then you’ll likely be sent to a labour camp. There are 16 camps across North Korea, holding around 200,000 prisoners between them. Famines and cannibalism - During the mid 90s famine in North Korea, an estimated 3.7 million people died. That’s around 10% of the population. It was due to flooding, making North Korean farmland unusable, while crippling national debt and a refusal to deal with the West made it impossible for them to import food.

North Korea (
listen), officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK; Chosŏn'gŭl: 조선민주주의인민공화국; hancha: 朝鮮民主主義人民共和國; MR: Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk), is a country in East Asia, in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. The name Korea is derived from the Kingdom of Goguryeo, also spelled as Koryŏ. The capital and largest city is Pyongyang. North Korea shares a land border with China to the north and northwest, along the Amnok (Yalu) and Tumen rivers, and a small section of the Tumen River also forms a border with Russia to the northeast. The Korean Demilitarized Zone marks the boundary between North Korea and South Korea.
Korea was annexed by the Empire of Japan in 1910. After the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II in 1945, Korea was divided into two zones by the United States and the Soviet Union, with the north occupied by the Soviets and the south by the Americans. Negotiations on reunification failed, and in 1948 two separate governments were formed: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north, and the Republic of Korea in the south. An invasion initiated by North Korea led to the Korean War (1950–53). Although the Korean Armistice Agreement brought about a ceasefire, no official peace treaty was ever signed. Both states were accepted into the United Nations in 1991.

Korea
Korea, called Chosŏn (Korean: 조선; Hanja: 朝鮮) in North Korea and Hanguk (Korean: 한국; Hanja: 韓國) or Daehanminkuk (Korean: 대한민국; Hanja: 大韓民國) in South Korea, is an East Asian territory that is divided into two distinct sovereign states: North Korea, formally the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), and South Korea, formally the Republic of Korea (ROK). Located on the Korean Peninsula, Korea is bordered by China to the northwest and Russia to the northeast. It is separated from Japan to the east by the Korea Strait and the Sea of Japan .
Korea emerged as a singular political entity after centuries of conflict among the Three Kingdoms of Korea, which were unified as Silla (57 BC – AD 935) and Balhae (AD 698 – 926). The united Silla was eventually succeeded by Goryeo in 935 at the end of the Later Three Kingdoms period. Goryeo, which gave name to the modern exonym "Korea", was a highly cultured state and created the Jikji in the 14th century. The invasions by the Mongol Empire in the 13th century, however, greatly weakened the nation, which forced it into vassalage. After the Yuan dynasty's collapse, severe political strife followed. Goryeo eventually fell to an uprising led by General Yi Seong-gye, who established Joseon in 1388.

North is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. North is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of south and is perpendicular to east and west.
Etymology
The word north is related to the Old High German nord, both descending from the Proto-Indo-European unit ner-, meaning "down" (or "under"). (Presumably a natural primitive description of its concept is "to the left of the rising sun".)
The Latin word borealis comes from the Greek boreas "north wind, north", which, according to Ovid, was personified as the son of the river-god Strymon, the father of Calais and Zetes. Septentrionalis is from septentriones, "the seven plow oxen", a name of Ursa Maior. The Greek arktikos is named for the same constellation, and is the derivation of the English word "Arctic".
Other languages have sometimes more interesting derivations. For example, in Lezgian, kefer can mean both 'disbelief' and 'north', since to the north of the Muslim Lezgian homeland there are areas formerly inhabited by non-Muslim Caucasian and Turkic peoples. In many languages of Mesoamerica, "north" also means "up". In Hungarian the word for north is észak, which is derived from éjszaka ("night"), since above the Tropic of Cancer, the Sun never shines from the north.

I've always been very interested in North Korea because it seemed to be one of the most unique and mysterious countries in the whole world. This is my day to day life throughout the 7 days that I spent in North Korea. You can never be sure whether things were staged or not in North Korea because you are only shown what they want you to see. You can't choose where or when you will be going to specific places, they simply tell you to hop on a bus and ask you to get off at one point or another. That is why I didn't want to offer my opinion about whether things were staged or not, whether they were good or not, or honest or not. My goal was to show you what my day to day life looked like when I was there and let you make up your own mind and judge for yourself. Do not judge North Korea only from what you see in this video. This is what they showed us and there's a reason they show some things and not show the others. Also, knowing how much control they exercise over the population, everything could have been staged only for us. My favorite books about North Korea: Dear Leader by Jang Jin Sung; Nothing To Envy by Barbara Demick; Escape From Camp 14 by Blaine Harden; 1984 by George Orwell (I couldn't believe how similar some things in North Korea looked to the ones in the book). North Korea – a country ruled by a tyrant with it’s people living in a brainwashed, totalitarian world. It’s a huge contrast from it’s first-world, developed neighbors in the South. It’s a strange thing that you can live and teach English in Seoul, have an amazing lifestyle and make good money in a safe and exciting city… An then drive an hour North and be at the most militarized border in the world. Go ahead watch the video I made of me going to the eery Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and actually stepping over the border: This was one of the highlights of my year in Korea. It’s strange how few Koreans seem to do the tour of the border… Perhaps it’s a little too painful as there is a deep longing in the collective unconscious of the South Koreans for the unification of the two halves of the Korean peninsular. As a foreigner it helped me to understand the intense history of conflict the country has experienced. The sad thing is Koreans are all one people and the splitting of their home led to the separation of thousands of families. It also made me grateful the opportunity to live and teach in South Korea, where there is freedom of speech and a culture of kindness and generosity among the people. One thing to note is that despite the conflict in the past and the close proximity to North Korea, right now South Korea is one of the safest countries in the world to live in. There is a lot of flexing of muscles between the two but it’s not something you need to worry about if you decide to come teach here. You can go ahead and tell your family and friends, that no, going to Korea is not in immanent danger of nuclear war and that your decision to teach in Korea isn't a reckless one. ;) I've got an exciting announcement coming up soon. Foreign abduction zones - In the 1970s the founder of North Korea, Kim il Sung, ordered special camps to be built around the country. These camps began to be populated by young Japanese people. How did they get there? They were kidnapped by North Korean spies from towns on the Japanese coast, thrown in a sack and then transported on dinghies to the ‘invitation only’ zones. Fruit and fertiliser - Malnourishment is a massive problem in North Korea. During the 1990s, a huge famine hit the country and an estimated 3.7 million North Koreans died. Even today, it’s thought that 40% of North Koreans suffer from malnourishment. These things they believe - When a country’s population has virtually no contact with the outside world, you can tell them anything, and they’ll believe you. For example, most people inside North Korea are adamant that their former ’dear leader’ Kim Jong Il led a pretty exciting life. Get money - North Korea is officially the most corrupt country in the world. When nearly every country in the world refuses to do business with you, you have to get creative. That’s exactly what North Korea has done to try and make some money. Hairstyles and lifestyles - Life can be deadly dull in North Korea. If you’re a man, there are only 28 hairstyles, approved by the state, that you’re allowed to have. North Korean internet - Next time you think you’ve completed the internet, spare a thought for the North Koreans. Over there, the state controls the net, and it’s more like a company intranet than a world wide web. Class and caste - In most countries in the world there is some sort of class system, but nowhere is it as rigid as in North Korea. in 1957, leader Kim Il Sung ordered an investigation of the entire population, which led to the separating of everyone into 3 classes, based on family history rather than the individual person’s actions. 3 generations of punishment. - Talking of which, North Korea is big on punishing the whole family for the actions of one individual. If you commit a crime in North Korea, your children and your grandchildren will bear the stain of your action, and they will be punished too. Labour camps - In North Korea, If you commit a crime that isn’t punishable by execution, then you’ll likely be sent to a labour camp. There are 16 camps across North Korea, holding around 200,000 prisoners between them. Famines and cannibalism - During the mid 90s famine in North Korea, an estimated 3.7 million people died. That’s around 10% of the population. It was due to flooding, making North Korean farmland unusable, while crippling national debt and a refusal to deal with the West made it impossible for them to import food. -

NORTH KOREA has closed its borders in fear of the spread of the Ebola virus. But at a time when the secretive state was still welcoming tourists, former aid worker Andrew Macleod made the journey to the repressive nation. Andrew’s holiday snaps and camera footage provide a unique insight into the reclusive country, where he came across deserted motorways, metro stations plastered with propaganda and attractive border guards.

I've always been very interested in North Korea because it seemed to be one of the most unique and mysterious countries in the whole world. This is my day to da...
I've always been very interested in North Korea because it seemed to be one of the most unique and mysterious countries in the whole world. This is my day to day life throughout the 7 days that I spent in North Korea. You can never be sure whether things were staged or not in North Korea because you are only shown what they want you to see. You can't choose where or when you will be going to specific places, they simply tell you to hop on a bus and ask you to get off at one point or another.
That is why I didn't want to offer my opinion about whether things were staged or not, whether they were good or not, or honest or not. My goal was to show you what my day to day life looked like when I was there and let you make up your own mind and judge for yourself.
Do not judge North Korea only from what you see in this video. This is what they showed us and there's a reason they show some things and not show the others. Also, knowing how much control they exercise over the population, everything could have been staged only for us.

Nothing To Envy by Barbara Demick;
Escape From Camp 14 by Blaine Harden;
1984 by George Orwell (I couldn't believe how similar some things in North Korea looked to the ones in the book).

North Korea – a country ruled by a tyrant with it’s people living in a brainwashed, totalitarian world. It’s a huge contrast from it’s first-world, developed neighbors in the South.
It’s a strange thing that you can live and teach English in Seoul, have an amazing lifestyle and make good money in a safe and exciting city… An then drive an hour North and be at the most militarized border in the world.
Go ahead watch the video I made of me going to the eery Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and actually stepping over the border:
This was one of the highlights of my year in Korea.
It’s strange how few Koreans seem to do the tour of the border…
Perhaps it’s a little too painful as there is a deep longing in the collective unconscious of the South Koreans for the unification of the two halves of the Korean peninsular.
As a foreigner it helped me to understand the intense history of conflict the country has experienced.
The sad thing is Koreans are all one people and the splitting of their home led to the separation of thousands of families.
It also made me grateful the opportunity to live and teach in South Korea, where there is freedom of speech and a culture of kindness and generosity among the people.
One thing to note is that despite the conflict in the past and the close proximity to North Korea, right now South Korea is one of the safest countries in the world to live in.
There is a lot of flexing of muscles between the two but it’s not something you need to worry about if you decide to come teach here. You can go ahead and tell your family and friends, that no, going to Korea is not in immanent danger of nuclear war and that your decision to teach in Korea isn't a reckless one. ;)

These camps began to be populated by young Japanese people. How did they get there? If you’re a man, there are only 28 hairstyles, approved by the state, that you’re allowed to have. Over there, the state controls the net, and it’s more like a company intranet than a world wide web. Class and caste - In most countries in the world there is some sort of class system, but nowhere is it as rigid as in North Korea. in 1957, leader Kim Il Sung ordered an investigation of the entire population, which led to the separating of everyone into 3 classes, based on family history rather than the individual person’s actions. 3 generations of punishment. - Talking of which, North Korea is big on punishing the whole family for the actions of one individual. If you commit a crime in North Korea, your children and your grandchildren will bear the stain of your action, and they will be punished too. Labour camps - In North Korea, If you commit a crime that isn’t punishable by execution, then you’ll likely be sent to a labour camp. There are 16 camps across North Korea, holding around 200,000 prisoners between them. Famines and cannibalism - During the mid 90s famine in North Korea, an estimated 3.7 million people died. This is my day to day life throughout the 7 days that I spent in North Korea. You can never be sure whether things were staged or not in North Korea because you are only shown what they want you to see. A Month Around China
This video is made up from almost 3000 photos taken over four weeks of travelling around China and Hong Kong. We spent five days in Beijing, prior to our trip in North Korea, seeing celebrations for Golden Week - China National Day in Tiananmen Square and the Summer Palace. We joined the Dragon Trip, after returning from North Korea, for an 18 day tour around China beginning in Yangshuo. Yangshuo (in Guilin) is famous for its Karst mountain range spread across its farmland. The War Of Eyes - How Tourism Helps The Two Koreas To Stare Down Each Other
This clip documents a day trip to the Joint Security Area at the border that divides the Korean Peninsula. A tourist bus starts from Seoul and stops at an observatory near the Freedom Bridge where tourists can peer into the North. A tour guide provides the South Korean perspective on North Korea explaining i.e. the lack of trees in the North and the small size of North Korean Soldiers. The ground started to shake and ripple under your feet as the tanks started to roll by,the street filled with thick clouds of diesel fumes.Alongside the thunderous noise you could still here the cheering. large groups of school children were trying to out sing or out screen each other, parents, grandparents waving plastic flowers some resembling mechanical toys,they lined the streets for as far as you could see.The tanks were followed by missile launchers,rockets, artillary canons and finally a never ending convoy of open top trucks filled with cheering soldiers.the whole parade had been delayed for hours due to a few clouds in the sky so by the time it had passed by it was completly dark.Finally as the convoy started to thin out the heavens opened up.the wind picked up and it poured down.For a while everyone remained in place and kept cheering what was left of the Korean Peoples Army and then like a giant herd of startled wilderbeast everyone was on the move.I took refuge in the middle of a brass band who had held their ground.The police were still frantically blowing their whistles trying to keep some order,in this chaos the brass band were still playing.I looked around it looked like a scene from Titanic.

When travelling around North Korea the two english words you will probrually hear more than any other will be No Photo.The general rules layed down by the korean guides are not to take photos of people in military uniform,construction sights or images of what they percieve to be of poverty.This makes filming In the country pretty challenging,images of what many westerners including myself see as being oldschool,rectro rustic and unspoilt completly confuse the koreans who would much rather you took images of the statues of their dear leaders,monuments and newly constructed appartment blocks.
Ive always just used a DSLR to shoot video in NK,it seems to draw less attention.
Beyond all the propaganda, and facades you encounter in North korea.The natural wonders that the country holds are undeniably beautifull and as for the people,everything they do is done with so much dedication,dertimination, and a togetherness that ive never encounterd before.

The Parade
The ground started to shake and ripple under your feet as the tanks started to roll by,the street filled with thick clouds of diesel fumes.Alongside the thunderous noise you could still here the cheering. large groups of school children were trying to out sing or out screen each other, parents, grandparents waving plastic flowers some resembling mechanical toys,they lined the streets for as far as you could see.The tanks were followed by missile launchers,rockets, artillary canons and finally a never ending convoy of open top trucks filled with cheering soldiers.the whole parade had been delayed for hours due to a few clouds in the sky so by the time it had passed by it was completly dark.Finally as the convoy started to thin out the heavens opened up.the wind picked up and it poured down.For a while everyone remained in place and kept cheering what was left of the Korean Peoples Army and then like a giant herd of startled wilderbeast everyone was on the move.I took refuge in the middle of a brass band who had held their ground.The police were still frantically blowing their whistles trying to keep some order,in this chaos the brass band were still playing.I looked around it looked like a scene from Titanic.

This video is made up from almost 3000 photos taken over four weeks of travelling around China and Hong Kong.
We spent five days in Beijing, prior to our trip in North Korea, seeing celebrations for Golden Week - China National Day in Tiananmen Square and the Summer Palace.
We joined the Dragon Trip, after returning from North Korea, for an 18 day tour around China beginning in Yangshuo. Yangshuo (in Guilin) is famous for its Karst mountain range spread across its farmland. Here we saw a rural side of China; seeing the scenic view from 20 Yuan note, visiting a Dragon Trip's tour guide's family farm, have a cooking class, cycle through the mountains and farmland, float down the Yulong River on a bamboo raft and see the traditional Cormorant bird Fishing.
After Yangshuo we travelled to Chengdu; the heart of the West of China. We visited the largest building in the world the Global Center and saw pandas at the worlds biggest, Giant Panda Breeding & Research Center.
We then explored Xi'An seeing the Terracotta Warriors and cycling around the Ming Dynasty City Walls. After Xi'An we visited Dengfeng home of the Shaolin Monks and had a Kungfu lesson at a Children’s Home run by the Shaolin Temple.
Next we returned to Beijing seeing the Olympic Bird’s Nest stadium, hiked an unrestored section of the Great Wall and visited the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven.
From Beijing we travelled to Moganshan to hike to Moganshan Peak, see Chairman Mao’s previous summer residence and swim in a lagoon.
At the end of the Dragon Trip, we spent a week in Shanghai over Halloween. From Shanghai we flew to Hong Kong and while there took a ferry over to Macau.

The travel terminates in Panmunjeom within the JSA where guards and tourists stare at each other from both sides. The regulations allow tourists to carry nothing else than their cameras, the suitable equipment to be utilized in this "War Of Eyes" where filming and photographing is explicitely allowed.
The final highlight of the trip is a visit to the souvenir shop in the Demilitarized Zone where one can buy i.e. miniature dolls of soldiers, ginseng and uniforms.

I've always been very interested in North Korea because it seemed to be one of the most unique and mysterious countries in the whole world. This is my day to day life throughout the 7 days that I spent in North Korea. You can never be sure whether things were staged or not in North Korea because you are only shown what they want you to see. But at a time when the secretive state was still welcoming tourists, former aid worker Andrew Macleod made the journey to the repressive nation. Andrew’s holiday snaps and camera footage provide a unique insight into the reclusive country, where he came across deserted motorways, metro stations plastered with propaganda and attractive border guards.

I've always been very interested in North Korea because it seemed to be one of the most unique and mysterious countries in the whole world. This is my day to da...
I've always been very interested in North Korea because it seemed to be one of the most unique and mysterious countries in the whole world. This is my day to day life throughout the 7 days that I spent in North Korea. You can never be sure whether things were staged or not in North Korea because you are only shown what they want you to see. You can't choose where or when you will be going to specific places, they simply tell you to hop on a bus and ask you to get off at one point or another.
That is why I didn't want to offer my opinion about whether things were staged or not, whether they were good or not, or honest or not. My goal was to show you what my day to day life looked like when I was there and let you make up your own mind and judge for yourself.
Do not judge North Korea only from what you see in this video. This is what they showed us and there's a reason they show some things and not show the others. Also, knowing how much control they exercise over the population, everything could have been staged only for us.

Escape From Camp 14 by Blaine Harden;

North Korea – a country ruled by a tyrant with it’s people living in a brainwashed, totalitarian world. It’s a huge contrast from it’s first-world, developed neighbors in the South.
It’s a strange thing that you can live and teach English in Seoul, have an amazing lifestyle and make good money in a safe and exciting city… An then drive an hour North and be at the most militarized border in the world.
Go ahead watch the video I made of me going to the eery Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and actually stepping over the border:
This was one of the highlights of my year in Korea.
It’s strange how few Koreans seem to do the tour of the border…
Perhaps it’s a little too painful as there is a deep longing in the collective unconscious of the South Koreans for the unification of the two halves of the Korean peninsular.
As a foreigner it helped me to understand the intense history of conflict the country has experienced.
The sad thing is Koreans are all one people and the splitting of their home led to the separation of thousands of families.
It also made me grateful the opportunity to live and teach in South Korea, where there is freedom of speech and a culture of kindness and generosity among the people.
One thing to note is that despite the conflict in the past and the close proximity to North Korea, right now South Korea is one of the safest countries in the world to live in.
There is a lot of flexing of muscles between the two but it’s not something you need to worry about if you decide to come teach here. You can go ahead and tell your family and friends, that no, going to Korea is not in immanent danger of nuclear war and that your decision to teach in Korea isn't a reckless one. ;)

Perhaps it’s a little too painful as there is a deep longing in the collective unconscious of the South Koreans for the unification of the two halves of the Korean peninsular.
As a foreigner it helped me to understand the intense history of conflict the country has experienced.
The sad thing is Koreans are all one people and the splitting of their home led to the separation of thousands of families.
It also made me grateful the opportunity to live and teach in South Korea, where there is freedom of speech and a culture of kindness and generosity among the people.
One thing to note is that despite the conflict in the past and the close proximity to North Korea, right now South Korea is one of the safest countries in the world to live in.
There is a lot of flexing of muscles between the two but it’s not something you need to worry about if you decide to come teach here. You can go ahead and tell your family and friends, that no, going to Korea is not in immanent danger of nuclear war and that your decision to teach in Korea isn't a reckless one. ;)

These camps began to be populated by young Japanese people. How did they get there? They were kidnapped by North Korean spies from towns on the Japanese coast, thrown in a sack and then transported on dinghies to the ‘invitation only’ zones. Fruit and fertiliser - Malnourishment is a massive problem in North Korea. During the 1990s, a huge famine hit the country and an estimated 3.7 million North Koreans died. Even today, it’s thought that 40% of North Koreans suffer from malnourishment. These things they believe - When a country’s population has virtually no contact with the outside world, you can tell them anything, and they’ll believe you. For example, most people inside North Korea are adamant that their former ’dear leader’ Kim Jong Il led a pretty exciting life. Get money - North Korea is officially the most corrupt country in the world. When nearly every country in the world refuses to do business with you, you have to get creative. That’s exactly what North Korea has done to try and make some money. Hairstyles and lifestyles - Life can be deadly dull in North Korea. If you’re a man, there are only 28 hairstyles, approved by the state, that you’re allowed to have. North Korean internet - Next time you think you’ve completed the internet, spare a thought for the North Koreans. Over there, the state controls the net, and it’s more like a company intranet than a world wide web. Class and caste - In most countries in the world there is some sort of class system, but nowhere is it as rigid as in North Korea. in 1957, leader Kim Il Sung ordered an investigation of the entire population, which led to the separating of everyone into 3 classes, based on family history rather than the individual person’s actions. 3 generations of punishment. - Talking of which, North Korea is big on punishing the whole family for the actions of one individual. If you commit a crime in North Korea, your children and your grandchildren will bear the stain of your action, and they will be punished too. There are 16 camps across North Korea, holding around 200,000 prisoners between them. Famines and cannibalism - During the mid 90s famine in North Korea, an estimated 3.7 million people died.
