Hamburg, Germany, 8 July 2013 -- The GAVI Alliance and Lions Clubs International today announced a unique partnership designed to protect tens of millions of children in the world's poorest countries against measles, a highly infectious disease that kills an estimated 430 people every day, mostly in developing countries.
Under the partnership, Lions Clubs -- the world's largest service club organisation -- will deploy its network of 1.35 million volunteers to raise US$ 30 million and to improve access to vaccines through the GAVI Alliance, a public-private partnership whose mission is to save children's lives and protect people's health by increasing access to immunisation in the world's poorest countries.
The funds raised by the Lions will be matched by the UK's Department for International Development (DFID) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, bringing the total to US$ 60 million. The announcement was made at the Lions Clubs' 96th annual convention in Hamburg, Germany.
"Lions Clubs International and its members are excited to continue our commitment to the fight against measles and rubella," said Lions Clubs International Foundation Chair Wing-Kun Tam. "Through our joint efforts with GAVI and other partners, we will increase access to quality immunisation services at every level -- globally, nationally and locally -- to benefit children in developing countries."
Social mobilisation boost
Lions Clubs and GAVI will work with ministries of health in developing countries to ensure children are vaccinated against measles and rubella. Lions will also play a key role in social mobilisation efforts by working work with local leaders, coordinating community-level publicity and serving as volunteers at vaccination centres. Measles kills about 160,000 people annually, mostly children under age five. GAVI provides the measles vaccine in a single shot with the vaccine against rubella (German measles).
"This new partnership will bring us another step closer to effectively tackling measles and rubella, two serious infectious diseases," said Dr Seth Berkley, CEO of the GAVI Alliance. "Teaming up with the vast network of Lions Clubs worldwide will allow GAVI to immunise more children with the measles-rubella vaccine, ultimately reducing the number of measles deaths and cases of Congenital Rubella Syndrome."

Wing-Kun Tam, Lions Clubs International Foundation Chair
Lions Clubs has committed to raise US $30 million for GAVI immunisation programmes by 2017, when Lions Clubs celebrates its 100th anniversary. Under the GAVI Matching Fund, the UK and Gates Foundation match contributions to GAVI from corporations, foundations, their members, customers, employees and business partners with a goal of raising US$ 260 million for immunisation through 2015.
"We are grateful for the continued and generous commitment of Lions Clubs International and its members to improving the health of the world's poorest children," said Bill Gates Sr., co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. "This partnership will help us urgently reach all children, no matter where they live, with the vaccines they need."
The partnership makes Lions Clubs the largest member of the GAVI Matching Fund, which now has secured more than US$ 145 million in private sector gifts and donor matches. Lions Clubs is the Matching Fund's 10th member.

GAVI Alliance
Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance is a public-private global health partnership committed to increasing access to immunisation in poor countries.
Gavi brings together developing country and donor governments, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the World Bank, the vaccine industry in both industrialised and developing countries, research and technical agencies, civil society, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and other private philanthropists.
History
Gavi was launched in 2000, at a time when the distribution of vaccines to children in the poorest parts of the world had begun to falter. By the end of the 1990s, immunisation rates were stagnating or even declining. Nearly 30 million children born every year in developing countries were not fully immunised. With a US $750 million commitment from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the vision of delivering vaccines to these children suddenly came within reach.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has donated $1.5 billion to the alliance as of January 2013.

Lions Clubs International
Lions Clubs International (LCI) is an American secular, non-political service organization founded by Melvin Jones in 1917. As of April 2015, it had over 46,000 local clubs and more than 1.4 million members in over 200 countries around the world. Headquartered in Oak Brook, Illinois, United States, the organization aims to meet the needs of communities on a local and global scale.
Introduction
Lions Clubs International, a service membership organization of over 1.4 million members worldwide (as of April 2015), was founded in the United States on June 7, 1917, by Melvin Jones, a Chicago businessman. Jones asked, with regard to his colleagues, "What if these men who are successful because of their drive, intelligence and ambition, were to put their talents to work improving their communities?" Jones' personal code, "You can't get very far until you start doing something for somebody else," reminds many Lions of the importance of community service.
The Lions motto is "We Serve." Local Lions Club programs include sight conservation, hearing and speech conservation, diabetes awareness, youth outreach, international relations, environmental issues, and many other programs. The discussion of politics and religion is forbidden. The LIONS acronym also stands for Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nations' Safety.

Alliance
An alliance is a relationship among people, groups, or states that have joined together for mutual benefit or to achieve some common purpose, whether or not explicit agreement has been worked out among them. Members of an alliance are called allies. Alliances form in many settings, including political alliances, military alliances, and business alliances. When the term is used in the context of war or armed struggle, such associations may also be called allied powers, especially when discussing World War I or World War II.
A formal military alliance is not required for being perceived as an ally—co-belligerence, fighting alongside someone, is enough. According to this usage, allies become so not when concluding an alliance treaty but when struck by war.
When spelled with a capital "A", the word "Allies" usually denotes the countries who fought together against the Central Powers in World War I (the Allies of World War I), or those who fought against the Axis Powers in World War II (the Allies of World War II). The term has also been used by the United States Army to describe the countries that gave assistance to the South Vietnam during the Vietnam War.

Seth Berkley
Seth Franklin Berkley, M.D. (born 1956 in New York City, New York) is a medical epidemiologist by training. He is the CEO of the GAVI Alliance and a global advocate on the power of vaccines. He is also the founder and former President and CEO of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI). After graduation from McBurney School, New York, in 1974, he received a Bachelor of Science and medical degrees from Brown University, and trained in internal medicine at Harvard University. Berkley has been featured on the cover of Newsweek and recognized by Wired Magazine as among "The Wired 25"—a salute to dreamers, inventors, mavericks and leaders—as well as by TIME magazine as one of the "100 Most Influential People in the World" in 2009. In 2010, Fortune magazine named Berkley as one of its "Global Forum Visionaries." Speaking at the TED 2010 conference, Dr. Berkley explains how innovative vaccine design and production technologies are bringing us closer to controlling global health threats like flu and HIV.

Hamburg, Germany, 8 July 2013 -- The GAVI Alliance and Lions Clubs International today announced a unique partnership designed to protect tens of millions of children in the world's poorest countries against measles, a highly infectious disease that kills an estimated 430 people every day, mostly in developing countries.
Under the partnership, Lions Clubs -- the world's largest service club organisation -- will deploy its network of 1.35 million volunteers to raise US$ 30 million and to improve access to vaccines through the GAVI Alliance, a public-private partnership whose mission is to save children's lives and protect people's health by increasing access to immunisation in the world's poorest countries.
The funds raised by the Lions will be matched by the UK's Department for International Development (DFID) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, bringing the total to US$ 60 million. The announcement was made at the Lions Clubs' 96th annual convention in Hamburg, Germany.
"Lions Clubs International and its members are excited to continue our commitment to the fight against measles and rubella," said Lions Clubs International Foundation Chair Wing-Kun Tam. "Through our joint efforts with GAVI and other partners, we will increase access to quality immunisation services at every level -- globally, nationally and locally -- to benefit children in developing countries."
Social mobilisation boost
Lions Clubs and GAVI will work with ministries of health in developing countries to ensure children are vaccinated against measles and rubella. Lions will also play a key role in social mobilisation efforts by working work with local leaders, coordinating community-level publicity and serving as volunteers at vaccination centres. Measles kills about 160,000 people annually, mostly children under age five. GAVI provides the measles vaccine in a single shot with the vaccine against rubella (German measles).
"This new partnership will bring us another step closer to effectively tackling measles and rubella, two serious infectious diseases," said Dr Seth Berkley, CEO of the GAVI Alliance. "Teaming up with the vast network of Lions Clubs worldwide will allow GAVI to immunise more children with the measles-rubella vaccine, ultimately reducing the number of measles deaths and cases of Congenital Rubella Syndrome."

Wing-Kun Tam, Lions Clubs International Foundation Chair
Lions Clubs has committed to raise US $30 million for GAVI immunisation programmes by 2017, when Lions Clubs celebrates its 100th anniversary. Under the GAVI Matching Fund, the UK and Gates Foundation match contributions to GAVI from corporations, foundations, their members, customers, employees and business partners with a goal of raising US$ 260 million for immunisation through 2015.
"We are grateful for the continued and generous commitment of Lions Clubs International and its members to improving the health of the world's poorest children," said Bill Gates Sr., co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. "This partnership will help us urgently reach all children, no matter where they live, with the vaccines they need."
The partnership makes Lions Clubs the largest member of the GAVI Matching Fund, which now has secured more than US$ 145 million in private sector gifts and donor matches. Lions Clubs is the Matching Fund's 10th member.

Hamburg, Germany, 8 July 2013 -- The GAVI Alliance and Lions Clubs International today announced a unique partnership designed to protect tens of millions of children in the world's poorest countries against measles, a highly infectious disease that kills an estimated 430 people every day, mostly in developing countries.
Under the partnership, Lions Clubs -- the world's largest service club organisation -- will deploy its network of 1.35 million volunteers to raise US$ 30 million and to improve access to vaccines through the GAVI Alliance, a public-private partnership whose mission is to save children's lives and protect people's health by increasing access to immunisation in the world's poorest countries.
The funds raised by the Lions will be matched by the UK's Department for International Development (DFID) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, bringing the total to US$ 60 million. The announcement was made at the Lions Clubs' 96th annual convention in Hamburg, Germany.
"Lions Clubs International and its members are excited to continue our commitment to the fight against measles and rubella," said Lions Clubs International Foundation Chair Wing-Kun Tam. "Through our joint efforts with GAVI and other partners, we will increase access to quality immunisation services at every level -- globally, nationally and locally -- to benefit children in developing countries."
Social mobilisation boost
Lions Clubs and GAVI will work with ministries of health in developing countries to ensure children are vaccinated against measles and rubella. Lions will also play a key role in social mobilisation efforts by working work with local leaders, coordinating community-level publicity and serving as volunteers at vaccination centres. Measles kills about 160,000 people annually, mostly children under age five. GAVI provides the measles vaccine in a single shot with the vaccine against rubella (German measles).
"This new partnership will bring us another step closer to effectively tackling measles and rubella, two serious infectious diseases," said Dr Seth Berkley, CEO of the GAVI Alliance. "Teaming up with the vast network of Lions Clubs worldwide will allow GAVI to immunise more children with the measles-rubella vaccine, ultimately reducing the number of measles deaths and cases of Congenital Rubella Syndrome."

Lions Clubs has committed to raise US $30 million for GAVI immunisation programmes by 2017, when Lions Clubs celebrates its 100th anniversary. Under the GAVI Matching Fund, the UK and Gates Foundation match contributions to GAVI from corporations, foundations, their members, customers, employees and business partners with a goal of raising US$ 260 million for immunisation through 2015.
"We are grateful for the continued and generous commitment of Lions Clubs International and its members to improving the health of the world's poorest children," said Bill Gates Sr., co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. "This partnership will help us urgently reach all children, no matter where they live, with the vaccines they need."

Who Runs the World and Why?
The past few decades have seen a massive increase in the number of international organizations focusing on global health. Campaigns to eradicate or stem the spread of AIDS, SARS, malaria, and Ebola attest to the increasing importance of globally-oriented health organizations. These organizations may be national, regional, international, or even non-state organizations-like Medicins Sans Frontieres. One of the more important recent trends in global health governance, though, has been the rise of public-private partnerships (PPPs) where private non-governmental organizations, for-profit enterprises, and various other social entrepreneurs work hand-in-hand with governments to combat specific maladies. A primary driver for this development is the widespread belief that by joining together, PPPs will attack health problems and fund shared efforts more effectively than other systems.
As Chelsea Clinton and Devi Sridhar show in Governing Global Health, these partnerships are not only important for combating infectious diseases; they also provide models for developing solutions to a host of other serious global health challenges and questions beyond health. But what do we actually know about the accountability and effectiveness of PPPs in relation to the traditional multilaterals? According to Clinton and Sridhar, we have known very little because scholars have not accumulated enough data or developed effective ways to assess them-until now. In their analysis, they uncovered both strength and weaknesses of the model. Using principal-agent theory in which governments are the principals directing international agents of various type, they take a closer look at two major PPPs-the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria and the GAVI Alliance-and two major more traditional international organizations-the World Health Organization and the World Bank.
An even-handed and thorough empirical analysis of one of the most pressing topics in world affairs, Governing Global Health will reshape our understanding of how organizations can more effectively prevent the spread of communicable diseases like AIDS and reduce pervasive chronic health problems like malnutrition.
Chelsea Clinton is Vice Chair of the Clinton Foundation and a Lecturer at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia.
Devi Sridhar is Professor at the University of Edinburgh's Medical School and holds the Chair in Global Public Health. Previously, she was Senior Research Fellow at the Blavatnik School of Government and a Fellow of Wolfson College.

These organizations may be national, regional, international, or even non-state organizations-like Medicins Sans Frontieres. One of the more important recent trends in global health governance, though, has been the rise of public-private partnerships (PPPs) where private non-governmental organizations, for-profit enterprises, and various other social entrepreneurs work hand-in-hand with governments to combat specific maladies. A primary driver for this development is the widespread belief that by joining together, PPPs will attack health problems and fund shared efforts more effectively than other systems.
As Chelsea Clinton and Devi Sridhar show in Governing Global Health, these partnerships are not only important for combating infectious diseases; they also provide models for developing solutions to a host of other serious global health challenges and questions beyond health. But what do we actually know about the accountability and effectiveness of PPPs in relation to the traditional multilaterals? According to Clinton and Sridhar, we have known very little because scholars have not accumulated enough data or developed effective ways to assess them-until now. In their analysis, they uncovered both strength and weaknesses of the model. Using principal-agent theory in which governments are the principals directing international agents of various type, they take a closer look at two major PPPs-the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria and the GAVI Alliance-and two major more traditional international organizations-the World Health Organization and the World Bank.
An even-handed and thorough empirical analysis of one of the most pressing topics in world affairs, Governing Global Health will reshape our understanding of how organizations can more effectively prevent the spread of communicable diseases like AIDS and reduce pervasive chronic health problems like malnutrition.
Chelsea Clinton is Vice Chair of the Clinton Foundation and a Lecturer at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia.
Devi Sridhar is Professor at the University of Edinburgh's Medical School and holds the Chair in Global Public Health. Previously, she was Senior Research Fellow at the Blavatnik School of Government and a Fellow of Wolfson College.

Dr Seth Berkley delivered the lecture entitled Australia and GAVI: Saving the lives of women and children through immunisation on Wednesday, 21 March 2012 at the ANU.
Dr Berkley joined the GAVI Alliance (formerly the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation) as CEO in August 2011, as it launched its five year strategy to immunise a quarter of a billion children in the developing world with life-saving vaccines by 2015.
Prior to joining the GAVI Alliance (GAVI), Dr Berkley was the founder, president and CEO for 15 years of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), the first vaccine product development public-private sector partnership. Under his leadership, IAVI implemented a global advocacy programme that assured that vaccines received prominent attention in the media and in forums such as the G8, EU and the UN. He also oversaw the creation of a virtual vaccine product development effort involving industry, academia, and developing country scientists.
Prior to founding IAVI, Dr Berkley served as associate director in the Health Sciences Division at The Rockefeller Foundation. He has also worked for the Center for Infectious Diseases of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and for the Carter Center where he served as an epidemiologist at the Ministry of Health in Uganda. He has consulted or worked in more than 25 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
The GAVI Alliance is a unique public-private partnership of international organisations, donor governments, developing countries, vaccine manufacturers and civil society organisations, committed to protecting people's health by increasing access to immunisation. Australia is supporting GAVI to provide life-saving immunisations in the world's poorest countries. Every year nearly two million children die from vaccine-preventable diseases, mainly in developing countries. Immunisations not only save lives cost-effectively but promote health, allowing children to fully benefit from opportunities such as education.
GAVI, with Australia's help, has supported the immunisation of over 325 million children against a variety of preventable diseases. Since 2006, Australia has provided $94 million to GAVI and has committed to provide an additional $140 million by 2013. With Australia's support, GAVI has committed to rolling out the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine, to prevent cervical cancer amongst women in developing countries. Dr Berkley discussed the role of immunisation in saving the lives and improving the health of women and children worldwide.
