Button

In modern clothing and fashion design, a button is a small fastener, now most commonly made of plastic, but also frequently of metal, wood or seashell, which secures two pieces of fabric together. In archaeology, a button can be a significant artifact. In the applied arts and in craft, a button can be an example of folk art, studio craft, or even a miniature work of art.

Buttons are most often attached to articles of clothing but can also be used on containers such as wallets and bags. However, buttons may be sewn onto garments and similar items exclusively for purposes of ornamentation. Buttons serving as fasteners work by slipping through a fabric or thread loop, or by sliding through a buttonhole. Other types of fastenings include zippers, Velcro and magnets.

History

Buttons and button-like objects used as ornaments or seals rather than fasteners have been discovered in the Indus Valley Civilization during its Kot Yaman phase (c. 2800–2600 BCE) as well as Bronze Age sites in China (c. 2000–1500 BCE), and Ancient Rome.

Threads

Threads is a 1984 BAFTA award-winning British television drama, produced jointly by the BBC, Nine Network and Western-World Television Inc. Written by Barry Hines and directed by Mick Jackson, it is a docudrama account of nuclear war and its effects on the city of Sheffield in Northern England.

The primary plot centres on two families, the working-class Kemps and the middle-class Becketts, as a confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union erupts and escalates. As the United Kingdom prepares for war, the members of each family deal with their own personal crises. Meanwhile, a secondary storyline with the Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council serves to illustrate the British government's then-current continuity of government arrangements. As the nuclear exchange between NATO and the Warsaw Pact begin, the film depicts the terrible details of the characters' struggles to survive both the attacks and their aftermath. The balance of the story outlines the fate of each family as the characters face the medical, economic, social and environmental consequences of nuclear war.

Do it yourself

Do it yourself, also known as DIY, is the method of building, modifying, or repairing something without the direct aid of experts or professionals. Academic research describes DIY as behaviors where "individuals engage raw and semi-raw materials and component parts to produce, transform, or reconstruct material possessions, including those drawn from the natural environment (e.g. landscaping)". DIY behavior can be triggered by various motivations previously categorized as marketplace motivations (economic benefits, lack of product availability, lack of product quality, need for customization), and identity enhancement (craftsmanship, empowerment, community seeking, uniqueness)

The term "do-it-yourself" has been associated with consumers since at least 1912 primarily in the domain of home improvement and maintenance activities. The phrase "do it yourself" had come into common usage (in standard English) by the 1950s, in reference to the emergence of a trend of people undertaking home improvement and various other small craft and construction projects as both a creative-recreational and cost-saving activity.

Once you have a loom ready, the only thing you need for the bracelet is embroidery floss, scissors and a button for the closure. This friendship bracelet is done in no time, and you can reuse the bracelet loom many times. For the spiral friendship bracelet you need embroidery thread, scissors and a button. The entire bracelet is built by simple forward knots which you need to repeat until the bracelet is long enough to fit your wrist. So just knot, knot and knot! This friendship bracelet takes 20 minutes at most to complete and it looks so cool. I used four different colors of embroidery string to get a lovely color blocking bracelet. I love how simple this bracelet is to make, perfect if you are a beginner in bracelet making. Next I show how to make a pretty fishtail bracelet using a string. Again I used 4 colors of embroidery thread to get a bright and colorful bracelet. This bracelet can also be made using a nylon cord or any kind of string of your choice. If you are familiar with a fishtail braid, then this bracelet will be super easy for you to make. It takes so little time to complete one, but I am in love this bracelet design. For the simple diagonal stripes friendship bracelet you need embroidery floss, scissors and a button. This bracelet is done only by making easy forward knots all along the bracelet. It is a bit more time consuming than other bracelets in this DIY bracelets tutorial, but since it looks so beautiful in the end, I believe it is worth investing a bit time into it. For this easy bracelet you can use more or less pieces of string than me. If you use more pieces of thread, the friendship bracelet will be wider in the end. The last bracelet is a lovely threaded chain bracelet. For this bracelet you have to wrap the string around one side of chain. I used a corally red string for my entire bracelet, but you can also change the string pieces as you move along the bracelet. This way you get a cool color blocking chain threaded friendship bracelet. Ikan D5 Field Monitor Review
Ikan's new D5 field monitor has a 5.6 inch IPS panel with 1280 x 800 HD resolution. It's amazing how fast technology is moving forward. HDMI and HD SDI with loop through capability seems commonplace now compared to just a couple of years ago. The HDMI input on this monitor is also complimented by a 3G-SDI input/output and an audio out jack for headphones. There are four 1/4 20 metal mounting threads on this piece of kit, one on each side for adding accessories or for mounting on an articulating arm. It has all the standard bells and whistles like false color, color peaking, and DSLR scaling with four options: normal, 3:2, 16:9, or full screen. The D5 also lets you set upper clip levels so they'll flash purple on any overexposed images. Another nice feature is 1:1 movable pixel to pixel mapping. All of these can be customized into easy to use preset buttons on top of the monitor. The menu button uses scroll wheel design. You do get some nice power options with this monitor. Ikan’s BP-5 battery plates are compatible with Sony L, Sony BP-U, Canon 900, Canon-E6 and Panasonic D54 batteries. Ikan also makes its own 65 watt hour ultra high capacity IBS-1170 battery that comes with a push button life indicator. The D5 Field Monitor Basic Kit comes with the 5.6 inch HD-SDI LCD monitor with HD IPS panel, AC Adapter and a DV battery plate. The Deluxe Kit adds a DV battery, DV battery charger, DV battery plate, an Ultra-Heavy Duty Camera Shoe Mount, a snap on Sun Visor and a soft case. I found little use for the sun visor as it was is too small to actually provide any shade relief to the monitor. Ikan has not yet designed a proper sun shade/hood for this model but they tell me it's in the works. For now, Hoodman makes one that fits 5 to 6 inch flat panels: http://www.hoodmanusa.com/prodinfo.asp?number=H-600 More and more companies are jumping into the field monitor game since the days of Marshall and Small HD. There are many to choose from, but few are quality made. Ikan's biggest competition in the monitor wars in both price and design is Small HD with their solid, milled aluminum shell. In a promotional video they actually whip one of their monitors against a wall and when they retrieve it... low and behold it still works! I wouldn't try that trick with the D5, but then again, why would you? For the money, the D5 is fine piece of kit that puts out a darn good looking HD picture.
