Luminescence by David Biedenbender

"Luminescence" is based on fragments from the melody "Break Forth O Beauteous Heavenly Light," which was written by Johann Schop (ca. 1590–1664) and subsequently harmonized in several settings by Johann Sebastian Bach.
"Break Forth O Beauteous Heavenly Light" was first known as “Ermuntre dich, mein schwacher Geist” (Rouse thyself, my weak spirit), and was published in Lepzig in 1641 in Johann Rist’s Himmlische Lieder (Heavenly or Celestial Songs), where the tune appeared in triple meter along with text by Rist. Johann Sebastian Bach probably found an altered version of the tune in Johann Cruger’s Praxis Pietatis Melica (1647) and subsequently harmonized it in various settings. This particular setting is from the second cantata of his Christmas Oratorio from 1737.
The original melody had a different character in its original form, as it was more closely related to Renaissance musical style. By the time Bach harmonized the tune in the 18th century, musical preferences had shifted: the rhythm of the melody was made more consistent, the tempo became slower, and the harmony and counterpoint was more complex. This setting is still sung in modern churches at Christmas and is commonly known as "Break Forth O Beauteous Heavenly Light."

Types of Luminescence Luminescence is a non-thermal glow of substance that occurs after the substance absorbs excitation energy. For the first time luminescence was described in the XVIII century. Initially, the phenomenon of luminescence was used in the manufacture of luminous paints and luminous mixtures based on phosphorus to apply them to the scales of devices intended to be used in the dark. In the USSR luminescence hadn't attracted any special attention until 1948, when a soviet scientist, S.I. Vavilov, at a session of the Supreme Council proposed to produce economical luminous lamps and to use luminescence for the analysis of chemical substances. In our everyday life luminescence phenomenon is often used in luminous "daylight" lamps and CRTs. The phenomenon of luminescence lies at the root of the light amplification phenomenon, which is experimentally confirmed by the work of V.A. Fabrikant and forms the basis of scientific and technical area of quantum electronics, which is applied, in particular, in light amplifiers and stimulated emission oscillators (lasers). Luminescence of bodies can be divided into the following types: • photoluminescence means glowing under light exposure (visible and ultraviolet range). It, in turn, is divided into o fluorescence (lifetime from 10-9 to10-6 seconds);o phosphorescence (from 10-3 to 10 seconds);• chemiluminescence is the glowing that uses the energy of chemical reactions; • cathodoluminescence is caused by irradiation with fast electrons (cathode rays); • sonoluminescence is luminescence, caused by high frequency sound; • roentgenoluminescence takes place under the exposure of X-rays. • radioluminescence occurs upon excitation of a substance by ?-radiation; • triboluminescence is luminescence that happens when luminophors are grinded, crushed, or cleaved. Triboluminescence is caused by electrical discharges occurring between the newly-formed electrified parts: the light of discharges causes the photoluminescence of a luminophor. • electroluminescence occurs when electric current runs through certain types of luminophors. Currently, photoluminescence is the most studied type of luminescence.

Luminescence
Luminescence is emission of light by a substance not resulting from heat; it is thus a form of cold body radiation. It can be caused by chemical reactions, electrical energy, subatomic motions, or stress on a crystal. This distinguishes luminescence from incandescence, which is light emitted by a substance as a result of heating. Historically, radioactivity was thought of as a form of "radio-luminescence", although it is today considered to be separate since it involves more than electromagnetic radiation. The term 'luminescence' was introduced in 1888 by Eilhard Wiedemann.
The dials, hands, scales and signs of aviation and navigational instruments and markings are often coated with luminescent materials in a process known as 'luminising'.

Types of Luminescence Luminescence is a non-thermal glow of substance that occurs after the substance absorbs excitation energy. For the first time luminescence was described in the XVIII century. Initially, the phenomenon of luminescence was used in the manufacture of luminous paints and luminous mixtures based on phosphorus to apply them to the scales of devices intended to be used in the dark. In the USSR luminescence hadn't attracted any special attention until 1948, when a soviet scientist, S.I. Vavilov, at a session of the Supreme Council proposed to produce economical luminous lamps and to use luminescence for the analysis of chemical substances. "Luminescence" is based on fragments from the melody "Break Forth O Beauteous Heavenly Light," which was written by Johann Schop (ca. 1590–1664) and subsequently harmonized in several settings by Johann Sebastian Bach.
"Break Forth O Beauteous Heavenly Light" was first known as “Ermuntre dich, mein schwacher Geist” (Rouse thyself, my weak spirit), and was published in Lepzig in 1641 in Johann Rist’s Himmlische Lieder (Heavenly or Celestial Songs), where the tune appeared in triple meter along with text by Rist. Johann Sebastian Bach probably found an altered version of the tune in Johann Cruger’s Praxis Pietatis Melica (1647) and subsequently harmonized it in various settings. This particular setting is from the second cantata of his Christmas Oratorio from 1737.
