Welcome to Ottawa, Ontario, where you’ll find charming old-world buildings surrounded by picturesque natural beauty.
The first stop on an Ottawa tour should be the Rideau Canal. This waterway cuts the city in half, and it provides places for boating and paddleboarding during the summer. Visiting in winter? Not a problem—you can go ice skating along the Rideau when it ices over. On the south side of the river, you can see the Changing of the Guard Ceremony at Parliament Hill. A few blocks to the north is the National Gallery of Canada, a stunning glass-and-granite building full of art from Canadian, European, and other North American artists.
You’ll be hungry after all this walking around, so head to ByWard Market. If you see beavertails, don’t worry; they’re a pastry, not part of an actual beaver—and they’re delicious. Ottawa (
i/ˈɒtəwə/ or /ˈɒtəwɑː/; French pronunciation: [ɔtawa]) is the capital city of Canada. It stands on the south bank of the Ottawa River in the eastern portion of Southern Ontario. Ottawa borders Gatineau, Quebec; the two form the core of the Ottawa–Gatineau census metropolitan area (CMA) and the National Capital Region (NCR). The 2011 census reported a population of 883,391 within the city, making it the fourth-largest city in Canada, and 1,236,324 within the CMA, making it the fourth-largest CMA in Canada. The City of Ottawa has since estimated it had a population of 951,727 in 2014.
Founded in 1826 as Bytown, and incorporated as "Ottawa" in 1855, the city has evolved into a political and technological centre of Canada. Its original boundaries were expanded through numerous minor annexations and were ultimately replaced by a new city incorporation and major amalgamation in 2001 which significantly increased its land area. The city name "Ottawa" was chosen in reference to the Ottawa River nearby, which is a word derived from the Algonquin word Odawa, meaning "to trade".

Ottawa River
The Ottawa River (French: Rivière des Outaouais, Algonquin: Kitchissippi), is a river in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. For most of its length, it defines the border between these two provinces.
Geography
The river rises from its source in Lake Capimitchigama, in the Laurentian Mountains of central Quebec, and flows west to Lake Timiskaming. From there its route has been used to define the interprovincial border with Ontario.
From Lake Timiskaming, the river flows southeast to Ottawa and Gatineau, where it tumbles over the Chaudière Falls and further takes in the Rideau and Gatineau rivers.
The Ottawa River drains into the Lake of Two Mountains and the St. Lawrence River at Montreal. The river is 1,271 kilometres (790 mi) long; it drains an area of 146,300 square kilometres (56,500 sq mi), 65 percent in Quebec and the rest in Ontario, with a mean discharge of 1,950 cubic metres per second (69,000 cu ft/s).
The average annual mean waterflow measured at Carillon dam, near the Lake of Two Mountains, is 1,939 cubic metres per second (68,500 cu ft/s), with average annual extremes of 749 to 5,351 cubic metres per second (26,500 to 189,000 cu ft/s). Record historic levels since 1964 are a low of 529 cubic metres per second (18,700 cu ft/s) in 2005 and a high of 8,190 cubic metres per second (289,000 cu ft/s) in 1976.

A film festival is an organized, extended presentation of films in one or more cinemas or screening venues, usually in a single city or region. Increasingly, film festivals show some films outdoors. Films may be of recent date and, depending upon the festival's focus, can include international and domestic releases. The Venice Film Festival is the oldest major festival. The Melbourne International Film Festival is the largest film festival in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the oldest in the world. The first stop on an Ottawa tour should be the Rideau Canal. This waterway cuts the city in half, and it provides places for boating and paddleboarding during the summer. Visiting in winter? Not a problem—you can go ice skating along the Rideau when it ices over. On the south side of the river, you can see the Changing of the Guard Ceremony at Parliament Hill. A few blocks to the north is the National Gallery of Canada, a stunning glass-and-granite building full of art from Canadian, European, and other North American artists.
You’ll be hungry after all this walking around, so head to ByWard Market. If you see beavertails, don’t worry; they’re a pastry, not part of an actual beaver—and they’re delicious. ByWard Market also has some of the best fresh produce you’ll ever taste, so stock up on fruits and vegetables while you’re there.
After sampling the fare at ByWard Market, cross the river to visit the Canadian Museum of History in Quebec. This is where you can tour recreations of Old Canada: explore 1800s storefronts, wander into log cabins, and learn about the First Nations people who inhabited Canada for thousands of years prior to European settlement.

Myself and Isaac Levinson headed to Ontario and Quebec for 10 days this summer. It was a very quick trip but opended my eyes to the incredible white water eastern Canada has to offer. This trip would of been nothing without the local support we recieved while over there, it was an inspiring place with a lot of talented kayakers.

It ended up being one of coolest weekends I've had in a long time. These days, I'm slaving away at school work while trying to keep up with my online work commitments most weekends. Getting outside of my apartment and traveling again reinvigorated me in a way that I haven't felt in quite some time.
During my less than 48 hour visit, Rob and I covered a lot of the main attractions in Ottawa along with spending plenty of time of time dedicated for eating, drinking, catching up and talking about our travels dreams and future projects we have on the go.
Visiting Ottawa - First Impressions of the capital city of Canada script:
Well, it is time to escape Kingston this weekend. I'm going to Ottawa via train and I'm going to meet one of my good buddies Rob. He does what we do. His website is Stop Having A Boring Life Dot Com and he also has a YouTube channel by the same name. I'm flying solo today. Audrey is at a conference in Washington DC, so I'll be all alone on my train journey.
This is the first time I've taken a train in Canada during winter months. With it only being a two hour ride I enjoyed looking out the window at the snow covered scenery while also catching up on some much needed rest.
It is my first time ever in Ottawa. Now it is time to go find Rob.
Alright, so I've met up with my buddy Rob. He's taking me to his favorite sushi place. All you can eat. We are just going to absolutely crush a meal here. We are.
What did we order so far? Oh man. We got yummy yummy rolls, rainbow rolls, dragon rolls, sushi nagari. We've got seaweed salad, which I love, miso soup spare ribs. Um...we've got everything! Hahaha! We're just going to pig out.
Here my man Rob has got the beaver tail. So what exactly are these? Beavertails, are like an iconic Canadian snack - especially in Ottawa. Basically, it is just dough but it looks like a beaver tail. If you know what a beaver is. It totally does. And it is covered in brown sugar and this one here is called the killer loose sunrise because it also has lemon. It is my personal favorite and you can't come to Ottawa without having one. Let's devour these. Do it man.
Alright, we're doing this man. First bite. That is so good man. It's so sweet and delicious. I'm going to eat them both. Be my guest.
After feasting on food, Rob did a great job playing tour guide showing me around Ottawa. Some of places we covered included the Parliament Hill, the National War Memorial, Rideau Canal, the National Gallery of Canada, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Terry Fox statue. Man, I can't believe we did that much all in one day. Afterwards we headed to his place for dinner and beers.
Basically, I do what these guys do and there is a lot of other people doing it. And I really enjoy hanging out with guys like Sam or other people that do what I like to do. Because we share the same passion about what we do. What we do is we travel and somehow through sharing a lot of content, because we love doing it, it has managed to turn into more than that. Where other opportunities come up and that helps perpetuate doing it even more. I run Stop Having A Boring Life. It is my blog but it is also my YouTube channel here. So, the link is probably going to be in the description. Yeah, absolutely and Rob really lives up to that man. This guy does not live a boring life, trust me. So I travel basically most of the year. I live in the Caribbean and I stay there for three or four months a year usually and then the rest of the year I'm just out and about traveling around. Cool experiences. Documenting. I used to write it on my blog all the time but now I am more into video so basically I'm making daily vlogs and different random things as well. But I basically do what Sam does and I travel around working on my laptop and getting into adventures.

moved that Bill C-310, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (trafficking in persons), be read the second time and referred to a committee.
She said: Madam Speaker, today I am pleased to rise and speak to my private member's bill, Bill C-310, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (trafficking in persons). This bill follows my previous bill, Bill C-268, which created Canada's child trafficking offence with stiff penalties for individuals trafficking a minor in Canada. Having received royal assent on June 29, 2010, Bill C-268 is now law and is being used across Canada, most recently in a case right here in Ottawa.
Bill C-268 was supported by members from multiple parties in the last Parliament. I want to take a moment to thank the members from the Conservative Party, NDP, Liberal Party and Green Party for offering their support for Bill C-310. This bipartisan support reveals that members on both sides of the House are committed to combating human trafficking.
The term “human trafficking” can often be mistaken as human smuggling, which is the illegal movement of people across international borders. However, we must be clear and concise about what human trafficking is during our debate tonight.
Human trafficking is the illegal trade of human beings for sexual exploitation or forced labour or other forms of slavery. Human trafficking is nothing short of modern day slavery. The focus of my bill is on combating the enslavement of individuals both in Canada and abroad.
I would like to begin by speaking to the recent Ottawa case that I referred to a few minutes ago to demonstrate the reality of human trafficking here in Canada. Last week, Montreal police caught up to Jamie Byron, who was charged by the Ottawa police force for a number of serious human trafficking-related offences, including the trafficking of a minor. Mr. Byron, considered to be violent, is also wanted in Toronto for robbery, uttering threats and possession of a dangerous weapon.
I would ask members to take a moment and consider that only a few blocks away from where we are sitting today in the House, Jamie Byron was forcing underage girls into prostitution. The methods he used were particularly heinous. In a downtown Ottawa hotel a young 17-year-old girl trafficked from Windsor, Ontario was starved until she agreed to be a prostitute. This is nothing short of slavery.
As parliamentarians, we must be resolved to eradicating all forms of this slavery, both in Canada and abroad. The first clause in Bill C-310 would amend the Criminal Code to add the current trafficking in persons offences 279.01 and 279.011 to the list of offences which, if committed outside Canada by a Canadian or permanent resident, could be prosecuted in Canada. The very nature of human trafficking requires an international focus.
Canada is known as a source, transit and destination country for human trafficking. The human trafficking offence in section 279.01 states:
Every person who recruits, transports, transfers, receives, holds, conceals or harbours a person...or exercises control, direction or influence over the movements of a person...for the purpose of exploiting them or facilitating their exploitation is guilty of an indictable offence--
I would like to provide a basic example of how Bill C-310's amendment to extend extraterritorial jurisdiction to human trafficking offences would apply in an international human trafficking case.
Human trafficking can often have global implications with traffickers recruiting in one country and sending victims to another country. For example, if a Canadian trafficker were to situate him or herself in Romania and recruit, transport, transfer, receive, hold or control victims to be exploited in Canada or even within Romania, the amendment in Bill C-310 would ensure that person could be held criminally responsible in Canada.
However, if the trafficker were to return to Canada today without being caught or apprehended in Romania, the individual would not be guilty of an offence under Canadian law. In a reverse situation, this amendment would also ensure that Canada's trafficking in persons offences would apply to a Canadian who was trafficking Canadian victims within and throughout other countries.
Let us look at a real life example. John Wrenshall is a Canadian serving 25 years in an American prison for running a child brothel in Thailand. He was recruiting, holding and controlling boys as young as four years old and arranging for international child sex tourists to visit his brothel. Mr. Wrenshall even admitted to the court that his brothel was linked to a Thai pedophile sex trafficking ring.
The U.S. arrested Mr. Wrenshall in the U.K., after he left Thailand, for a number of a charges, including aiding and abetting Americans to sexually abuse children abroad.

On a cold wind-driven rainy fall day in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula just blocks from the roaring waves of Lake Superior, a conference was held for the many federal, state and local agencies and organizations that are on the front line of the fight to eradicate all forms of invasive species.
The menace is as tricky as it is widespread and costly to stop – invasive species ride on the wind, float on the water and find all forms of human transportation to creep their way across the Midwest – and the entire country.
From stubborn non-native weeds that travel with and on unsuspecting tourists to aquatic life like Zebra mussels that hitch a ride on ore boats and ocean freighters.
USFS Eastern Region Botanist Jan Schultz was the keynote speaker on Tues., Oct. 16, 2012 at the Rapid Response Invasive Plant Intervention Team of the U.P.! (RIPP IT UP!) Third Annual Northern Great Lakes Conference named “A United Front against Invasive Species” in the Marquette Masonic Lodge and Center.
The Marquette, Michigan presentation by Schultz titled “An Overview of Just How Far We’ve Come in the Battle against Invasive Species” was watched by many USFS employees and several groups assisting in the fight to stop invasive non-native weeds that are choking out all forms of wildlife.
Schultz is the USFS Non-native Invasive Species and Special Forest Products Program Leader stationed in Milwaukee, WI.
The hosts of the conference are one of the main northern Michigan groups fighting Invasives – and the group has a catching acronym for their long name: RIPP IT UP stands for Rapid Response Invasive Plant Intervention Team of the U.P.

Myself and Isaac Levinson headed to Ontario and Quebec for 10 days this summer. It was a very quick trip but opended my eyes to the incredible white water eastern Canada has to offer. ByWard Market also has some of the best fresh produce you’ll ever taste, so stock up on fruits and vegetables while you’re there.
After sampling the fare at ByWard Market, cross the river to visit the Canadian Museum of History in Quebec. This is where you can tour recreations of Old Canada: explore 1800s storefronts, wander into log cabins, and learn about the First Nations people who inhabited Canada for thousands of years prior to European settlement.
Round out your trip with a venture to Gatineau Park, where you can relax by the lake or take tea in the MacKenzie King estate.

Myself and Isaac Levinson headed to Ontario and Quebec for 10 days this summer. It was a very quick trip but opended my eyes to the incredible white water eastern Canada has to offer. This trip would of been nothing without the local support we recieved while over there, it was an inspiring place with a lot of talented kayakers.
Many thanks to the Canadian Tourism Commission for supporting the trip along with the Matador Network and Subaru Canada facilitating travel. Shout out to Marcos Gallegos, LP, Duece, John Hastings, RIVERPLAY, and Tribe for all the hospitality!
