Niger (i/ˈnaɪdʒər/ or /niːˈʒɛər/;French: [niʒɛʁ]), officially the Republic of Niger, is a landlocked country in Western Africa, named after the Niger River. Niger is bordered by Libya to the northeast, Chad to the east, Nigeria and Benin to the south, Burkina Faso and Mali to the west, and Algeria to the northwest. Niger covers a land area of almost 1,270,000 km2, making it the largest country in West Africa, with over 80 percent of its land area covered by the Sahara Desert. The country's predominantly Islamic population of 17,138,707 is mostly clustered in the far south and west of the country. The capital city is Niamey, located in the far-southwest corner of Niger.
Niger is a developing country, and is consistently one of the lowest-ranked in the United Nations' Human Development Index (HDI); it was ranked last at 187th for 2013. Much of the non-desert portions of the country are threatened by periodic drought and desertification. The economy is concentrated around subsistence and some export agriculture clustered in the more fertile south, and the export of raw materials, especially uranium ore. Niger faces serious challenges to development due to its landlocked position, desert terrain, high fertility rates and resulting overpopulation without birth control, poor education and poverty of its people, lack of infrastructure, poor health care, and environmental degradation.

Niger has one of the fastest growing populations in Africa. With an average of 7.6 children born to each woman, the UN projects Niger's population will more than triple from its current 20 million to 72 million by 2050. The growth of the population also means social infrastructure is quickly consumed leaving the government in search of options to deal with the population boom. "Niger is facing a massive demographic challenge. (21 Dec 2016) LEAD IN: Libya is sending over a hundred migrants back to Nigeria. STORY-LINE: At the departures hall of Tripoli's Maetiga airport, a large number of migrants are queuing to get their flights home. The Libyan Department of Anti-Illegal Immigration, with the help of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), is sending home 140 Nigerian migrants from the Libyan capital. The deportation decision was taken now because Libyan detention centres are getting very crowded and the cost of the feeding and taking care of migrants in such places is running up quite a bill. There are more plans to deport more migrants in the near future especially now that African embassies in Tripoli are starting to cooperate with the immigration department. "I'd like to give a word of...
Fraudsters in Ghana show us how they use internet scams to steal thousands of dollars from unsuspecting victims all over the globe. -- While Nigeria's 401 scammers may have written the book on West African internet fraud, their shtick looks like Compuserve compared to what's going on in Ghana. Unsatisfied with the meager winnings from emailing thousands of random Westerners in hopes of convincing one poor sap they're the treasurer of the Ivory Coast, Ghana's scammers decided to stack the odds in their favor the old-fashioned way—witchcraft. Taking a page from cyberpunk, traditional West African Juju priests adapted their services to the needs of the information age and started leading down-on-their-luck internet scammers through strange and costly rituals designed to increase their powers...

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said that Niger's economy is expected to growth by 5.2 percent in 2016. Nigeria's agricultural sector has suffered years of mismanagement, inconsistent and poorly conceived government policies and lack of basic infrastructure, yet it accounts for over 26.8 percent of the nation's GDP and 2/3 of employment. It is no longer a major exporter of cocoa, groundnuts (peanuts), rubber and oil palm production -which Nigeria led the world in- is now mostly from obsolete varieties and overage trees. Nigeria's oil palm production is stagnant at around 180,000 tons annually and 25 years ago it was 300,000 tons. An even more dramatic decline in groundnut and palm oil production also has taken place. While Nigeria is one of the world's largest producers of palm oil, it still remains a net importer of palm oil. In this episode of Earthfile, analysts argue how Nigeria should i...

Say hello to the next best thing on Instagram. We've been seeing these videos floating around the 'net the last couple days, especially the one above of Flip from Queenz smacking some poor kid's cereal because M.O.P.'s "Ante Up (Remix)" came on. Lil homie looks like he's used to these kind of reactions as he just sits there and takes it. This is how most of us act in the whip when nobody's watching. When certain songs come on, it's hard not to act reckless. We dug through Flips' Instagram page and found some more hilarious rap song reactions. He straight abuses passengers and almost crashes numerous times. Flip only rivals Lil Mayo when it comes to the art of savagery. Anything in the name of likes, we ain't mad at him. GUIDAN ROUMDJI, Niger, 5 November 2008 Lying on a bed in the maternity ward of the UNICEF-supported Guidan Roumdji Hospital in eastern Niger, Tchima Abou knew she could have died. The 27-year-old woman had given birth to her sixth child, a girl, at home when she started bleeding and slipped into unconsciousness. Fortunately, she was taken to the district hospital on time. The doctors and nurses there managed to save her life. I cannot believe I am still alive, said Ms. Abou. In Niger, a woman's lifetime risk of dying due to complications caused by pregnancy or childbirth is one in seven. Every year, 14,000 Nigerien mothers die from pregnancy-related causes most of which are preventable and thousands of other women experience injuries, infections, diseases or disabilities that can...

This year, UNICEFs flagship report, The State of the Worlds Children to be launched on 15 January addresses the need to close one of the greatest health divides between industrialized and developing countries: maternal mortality. Here is one in a series of related stories. NIAMEY, Niger, 9 January 2009 Aminatou Moukaila, eight months pregnant with her second child, came to the Madina Integrated Health Centre in Niamey for a regular check-up. She's one of thousands of women now benefiting from the recent introduction of free pre-natal health care in Niger a country where the maternal mortality rate is the highest in the world and the child mortality rate is among the highest, and where the average woman gives birth to seven children. With less than 50 percent of pregnant women in...
"http://www.mindbites.com/lesson/10436 for full video. Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world, and less than a third of its population has access to any health care. Malnutrition remains the main cause of maternal and infant mortality and well over half of all pregnant women suffer from iron deficiency anemia. This program follows two traditional birth attendants as they try to persuade women to take iron folate supplements and visit hospitals, which is often prohibitively expensive. The program also visits Tanzania, where it is malaria that is blamed for the increase in anemia which, in some areas, affects 93 per cent of children under five."

More than 18.7 million people, including four million children, in seven West African countries are at risk of severe malnutrition as a result of the current food crisis in the region. Erratic rainfall, poor harvests from 2011, rising global food prices and political instability in some countries have all combined to create the third major food crisis to hit West Africa in the past ten years. http://cnw.ca/erwL5 Distributed by OneLoad.com

Military forces in Niger and Nigeria have launched separate military operations to enable them deal with the current security threats they face. In the West African region it's been Boko Haram and just recently, Militancy in Nigeria's Niger Delta region. As CCTV'S Kelechi Emekalam reports, the authorities believe these operations would help in protecting their territorial integrity.
Since 2009, the militant Islamist group known as Boko Haram has wreaked havoc in northern Nigeria. Instilling terror through bombings, abductions, and beheadings, Boko Haram is fighting to create an Islamic state in the most populous country in Africa. VICE News traveled to Nigeria to embed with the country's army as it ramped up its fight against Boko Haram, whose rise has caused a state of emergency. (9 Nov 2016) Nigeria's Airforce carried out a counter-terrorism drill at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos on Tuesday. Special forces, police, fire department and emergency rescue units participated in the exercise during which an attack on one of the terminals was simulated. The exercises were intended to prepare the Airforce for any potential extremist threat and help rescue services practice emergency procedures. Nigeria's home-grown Islamic extremist group Boko Haram has emerged as a much more radical and violent group after a military attack on its headquarters in northeast Maiduguri city in 2009 killed about 700 people. The insurgents kidnapped 300 girls on April 2014 in a mass abduction that shocked the world. You can license this story through AP Archive...

While some places are on this list due to armed conflicts and violence, other places are on the list thanks to physical or biological calamities. Regardless of the reasons, the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. These are the 25 most dangerous places to visit as a tourist. Also, before we continue, just remember, being on this list doesn't necessarily mean the entire country is bad to visit (although it can). Just make sure to check on regional travel warnings. November 2015 I had the opportunity to travel to Niger, Africa with an incredible team of 18. As I returned home I had the privilege of creating a feature story on my trip for my TV class to share with my high school. As you watch this story from my heart I pray that you would be opened to the beautiful people of Niger and that you would partner with me in prayer for a flowing river of eternal life throughout this country and that souls would be saved for the Good News of our wonderful Savior, Jesus. Thank you for taking the time to watch this. Much love, Hannah

After a 13-hour shift, finally we arrive in Niamey. I knew NOTHING about Niger. So first I google things to do in Niamey, oh-uh, basically nothing. Just a mosque, a zoo which everyone tells to avoid, and a market. Yes, that’s it! We head to the market first, my gosh! What a chaos! How dirty! How alien! Everybody stares at us as if they’ve never seen a tourist before. Indeed I couldn’t see any other tourists around. Children are especially lovely as they immediately approach to us and smile, sometimes ask for money too but we couldn’t afford to give anybody any money :D Adults look a bit apprehensive first but once you chat to them they’re lovely too. After the market, we head to the mosque. It’s quite funny to see a goat grazing in front of a mosque ☺ Later, we head back to the hotel. A...
More and more children in Niger are being forced into early marriage. Very often it is wealthy men from neighbouring Nigeria who offer big dowries to marry poor Tuareg girls. It's a practice that has proved nearly impossible for the government to stop because of extreme poverty in Niger. Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra reports. Slowly the center of the universe shifts
No longer is he the birth of my shame
Now I see the end to this
Now I’m free to end all this
He don’t call me
and I surrender
He won’t see me
but I am headstrong
and I could be a little better
and I could be a little bit stronger
and I could be a little bit of everything
He was the stone on the ground I stepped upon
He meant to have me as I was for way too long
Now I see how I grew up
Now I’m here and he’s torn out
He won’t call me, and I surrender
He won’t see me
but I am headstrong
and I could be a little better
and I could be a little bit stronger
