Tom Paxton - Lyndon Johnson Told The Nation Lyrics: I got a letter from L. B. J. It said this is your lucky day. It's time to put your khaki trousers on. Though it may seem very queer We've got no jobs to give you here So we are sending you to Viet Nam [Cho:] Lyndon Johnson told the nation, "Have no fear of escalation. I am trying everyone to please. Though it isn't really war, We're sending fifty thousand more, To help save Viet nam from Viet Namese." I jumped off the old troop ship, And sank in mud up to my hips. I cussed until the captain called me down. Never mind how hard it's raining, Think of all the ground we're gaining, Just don't take one step outside of town. [Cho:] Every night the local gentry, Sneak out past the sleeping sentry. They go to joi...

When 77-year-old folk music legend Tom Paxton stopped by Acoustic Guitar’s offices in late April 2015, it was in the midst of what he insists will be his last tour, after more than five decades of nearly ceaseless travel and recording. He was in town to support his latest release, Redemption Road, more than 60 albums down the line since his 1964 debut at the height of the “folk scare.” Paxton has traveled a long way since the hey-day of the Greenwich Village scene, but he has never stopped writing great songs and touching hearts (and minds) with his music. On this afternoon, joined by guitarist Robin Bullock, Paxton opened with a beautiful version of one of his best-known older tunes, “The Last Thing on My Mind,” then played a pair of songs from Redemption Road, the wistful and nostalgic “...

Tom Paxton talks about the influences of The Weavers, Woody Guthrie, and the Kingston Trio, the rise of Bob Dylan, and Folk Rock
Tom Paxton remembers Bob Dylan in an interview with Ken Paulson, November 29, 2000: Paxton: One night in Greenwich Village, there's a — there used to be a club called Gerde's Folk City. So, one night, Dave Van Ronk and I — apparently, we had already done our three songs apiece. And we were sitting there drinking beer, and this scruffy kid in a black corduroy cap — what they called a Huck Finn cap — and a, and a harmonica rack and a — I think a Gibson guitar got up and sang three Woody Guthrie songs. And both Dave and I, who were not easy, said, "Yeah, not bad. Ooh, this guy's all right." So, in next to no time, Bob Dylan was the most talked about, argued about artist in the Village. I mean, they were accusing him of being a Woody Guthrie clone, which was nonsense. He didn't sound like W...

Tell the rose not to bloom, the stream to flow
Tell the rain not to fall, the tree to grow
Tell the high summer sky to lose it's blue
But don't tell me that I don't belong with you
CHORUS: You could send me away and I would go
I would go but I would not go too far
You could send me home but you would know
Home to me is anywhere you are
When I met you there was nothing to decide
It was simply something happening inside
I felt strange for a minute then I knew
That I finally felt complete when I found you
There are those who never really know their mind
They're confused and they're not the staying kind
