For many tablet owners, a case is a must – it can be the difference between an unscathed device and having to fork out money for repairs.
Some of the cases we've listed here are specific to a certain brand and model of tablet, although many of them have variations to suit a wider range of devices.
1. Twelve South BookBook: £59.99, Amazon
A worthy addition to any bookshelf, this beautiful leather case will transform the look of your tablet into a well-thumbed literary favourite. It’s functional, too – the stand is angled well and the tablet remains accessible – and it adequately guards against the daily bumps and scrapes.
2. Dessi Designs Triangle Print: £25, Not On The High Street
Adorned by the hand-drawn patterns of Southampton-based design outfit Dessi Designs, this quirky, lightweight plastic case may not rival some other cases on this in terms of hard-wearing protection, but is among the best-looking.
3. Knomo Knomad: £71.20, Knomo
Tuck your device into this sleeve’s back compartment, then open it up and utilise the smart-looking pockets inside – there’s space to keep credit cards, pens, passports, earphones and more. Made from luxurious leather and in a range of colours, it’s suitable for tablets up to 10 inches (there are others designed for iPad mini and Microsoft surface).
4. Cath Kidston Button spot hard case: £35, Cath Kidston
This leather-look case, from the popular homeware brand Cath Kidston, has an eye-catching polka dot design and is made to protect your iPad Air or Air 2. When closed, the front cover puts the tablet into sleep mode, preserving battery.
5. My Doodles Penguin case: £15, John Lewis
There are a number of playful character-based protective pouches to choose from here – this one is called Chilly the Penguin, and among its friends are Olivia the Owl and Phoebe the Bee. Aimed at kids, the soft padding works well.
6. Targus Versavu 360 Degree Rotating Case: £44.95, John Lewis
The back of the case swivels so that the tablet can either be propped up in a landscape or portrait position, and grooves on the case’s interior mean you can view it from different angles. Not the prettiest, but definitely the most functional, and very sturdy.
7. Fintie SmartShell: £19.99, Amazon
Simple, slim and sturdy, this case will protect your tablet while not too heavily distorting its original shape. It clips on and off easily, and all ports remain accessible. It comes in a range of designs, from minimal block colours to striking patterns.
8. Waterpoof Kindle Case: £25, Aquapac
Whether you’re a bathtime Kindle reader, or trekking with tech in the rain, this waterproof case will do the job. It’s made of strong, flexible TPU plastic, which will keep water out to a depth of five metres. The tablet’s touchscreen capability isn’t affected by the transparent material. Check the Aquapac website's size guide to see which case will best fit your tablet.
9. Maccessori Harris Tweed iPad sleeve: £24.99, Not On The High Street
Using tweed produced in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, this case will snugly house your iPad. The soft inner lining helps the screen remain scratch-free, while the Velcro-fastening leather flap keeps it secure. Not the most protective, but it looks and feels fantastic.
10. Gumdrop Hideaway: £32.97, Amazon
This ridged, easy-to-hold, rugged case means is ideal for children (or particularly clumsy adults). It’s made of tough polycarbonate material so stands firm against knocks. The stand clicks into two separate angles, for viewing and typing. Available for a huge range of tablets.
Verdict
Although it is somewhat pricey, the design, practicality and quality of the Knomo offering makes it a standout for us. But all things considered, we would recommend the durable, functional Targus Versavu - it's everything a tablet should be.
