South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost sovereign state in Africa. It is bounded on the south by 2,798 kilometers of coastline of southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, on the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and on the east by Mozambique and Swaziland, and surrounding the kingdom of Lesotho. South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation. It is the southernmost country on the mainland of the Old World or the Eastern Hemisphere.
South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution's recognition of 11 official languages, which is among the highest number of any country in the world. Two of these languages are of European origin: Afrikaans developed from Dutch and serves as the first language of most white and coloured South Africans; English reflects the legacy of British colonialism, and is commonly used in public and commercial life, though it is fourth-ranked as a spoken first language.
South is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. It is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. South is the polar opposite of north and is perpendicular to east and west.
The word south comes from Old English sūþ, from earlier Proto-Germanic *sunþaz ("south"), possibly related to the same Proto-Indo-European root that the word sun derived from.
By convention, the bottom side of a map is south, although reversed maps exist that defy this convention. To go south using a compass for navigation, set a bearing or azimuth of 180°. Alternatively, in the Northern Hemisphere outside the tropics, the Sun will be roughly in the south at midday.
True south is the direction towards the southern end of the axis about which the earth rotates, called the South Pole. The South Pole is located in Antarctica. Magnetic south is the direction towards the south magnetic pole, some distance away from the south geographic pole.
Roald Amundsen, from Norway, was the first to reach the South Pole, on 14 December 1911, after Ernest Shackleton from the UK was forced to turn back some distance short.
The Late Show may refer to:
Africa is the world's second-largest and second-most-populous continent. At about 30.2 million km2 (11.7 million sq mi) including adjacent islands, it covers six percent of Earth's total surface area and 20.4 percent of its total land area. With 1.1 billion people as of 2013, it accounts for about 15% of the world's human population. The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, both the Suez Canal and the Red Sea along the Sinai Peninsula to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The continent includes Madagascar and various archipelagos. It contains 54 fully recognized sovereign states (countries), nine territories and two de facto independent states with limited or no recognition.
Africa's population is the youngest amongst all the continents; the median age in 2012 was 19.7, when the worldwide median age was 30.4.Algeria is Africa's largest country by area, and Nigeria by population. Africa, particularly central Eastern Africa, is widely accepted as the place of origin of humans and the Hominidae clade (great apes), as evidenced by the discovery of the earliest hominids and their ancestors, as well as later ones that have been dated to around seven million years ago, including Sahelanthropus tchadensis, Australopithecus africanus, A. afarensis, Homo erectus, H. habilis and H. ergaster – with the earliest Homo sapiens (modern human) found in Ethiopia being dated to circa 200,000 years ago. Africa straddles the equator and encompasses numerous climate areas; it is the only continent to stretch from the northern temperate to southern temperate zones.
White South African is a term which refers to people from South Africa who are of European descent and who do not regard themselves, or are not regarded as, being part of another racial group (for example, as Coloured). In linguistic, cultural and historical terms, they are generally divided into the Afrikaans-speaking descendants of the Dutch East India Company's original settlers, known as Afrikaners, and the Anglophone descendants of predominantly British colonists. South Africa's white population is divided into 61% Afrikaans speakers, 36% English speakers, and 3% who speak another language, such as Portuguese. White South Africans are by far the largest European-descended population group in Africa.
White South Africans differ significantly from other white African groups, because they have developed nationhood, as in the case of the Afrikaners, who established a distinct language, culture and faith in Africa.
Afrikaner history may be traced back to the first permanent white settlement in sub-Saharan Africa, founded at the Cape of Good Hope by the Dutch under Jan van Riebeeck in 1652. Despite the preponderance of officials and colonists from the Netherlands, early Afrikaners also represented a number of other diverse nationalities. Among these were French Huguenots fleeing religious persecution at home and German soldiers or sailors returning from service in Asia. The colony remained under Dutch rule for two more centuries, after which it was annexed by Great Britain. Foundations for a large British diaspora in South Africa were laid with the 1820 Settlers and similar migrations.

The resistance to apartheid is also illustrated, as well as the history of Africa’s native inhabitants who journeyed from present day Botswana to the south of the country. http://www.TheExpeditioner.com Kruger National Park in South Africa is one of the world's best places for wildlife viewing. In this video I go in search of lion, while also catching glimpses of giraffes, elephants, rhinos, buffalo, hyenas, and baboons.
In Fall of 2009, I hunted black wildebeest in Africa in order to again "meet my meat." My wonderful guide was Chris Bolton, of Zungah Safaris, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. After the hunt, we transported the meat to a well-known Cape Town Chef, Pete Goff, of The Kitchen Cowboys. This was a very emotional experience for me and my friend, Sonja Kroop, who was shooting most of the footage. We had not anticipated the hunt nor filming, when we arrived to visit a friend in Cape Town, so the footage quality is old mini-dv, not high quality HD. Some viewers may find this to be GRAPHIC CONTENT, as it shows the killing of an animal for food.
After my safari in South Africa I hitched a ride to Tofo, Mozambique, a sleepy fishing village on the Indian Ocean known for its great beaches and amazing diving. In this video I head underwater to check out the local population of manta rays, whale sharks, and coral life; meet up with some new friends who make their living selling art in town; and recuperate from a bout of malaria I unfortunately caught while there.
This is the fourth video in the series to promote responsible tourism in South Africa. From our first destination, Cape Town. We interview Jennifer Aston, from WHL (http://www.southafricahotel-link.com/) and ask her how she views the position of responsible tourism in South Africa, and any practical tips she can provide to help people to reduce their negative impact. We then meet with a local friend and tour guide (Siviwe Mbinda) for walking tour around Langa - the first black township in Cape Town. He explains the history from apartheid to current day, and how tourism has helped benefit the local community. We even share a beer and watch a soccer game in a shebeen with the locals. In South Africa the word ‘township’ refers to a residential area for black Africans and Coloureds that segr...

We chose to travel to South Africa in the middle of winter (which was freezing for us South Floridians) but best for viewing wildlife due to the lack of foliage. This was a science mission since the Palm Beach Zoo seeks to expand it's African wildlife collection. We were giddy with exhilaration just to be in Africa and get ANY encounters! Driving through the Afri...

This is the third video in the series to promote responsible tourism in South Africa. From our first destination, Cape Town. We meet with a local friend and tour guide (Shaqir Erasmus) for a local breakfast and hike up Lion's Head (Part of the Table Mountain National Park). From a geographical and natural perspective, he explains the wildlife, scenery and history. This video, titled Pondoro, includes some sample footage from Balule Private Nature Reserve in South Africa. Balule Reserve is a large private reserve that borders Kruger National Park. It is unfenced, so that Animals are free to wander back and forth between Balule and Kruger as they wish. Pondoro is the name for Lion in a local dialect, and also the name of the game lodge that I stayed at while I was in this area (a truly fantastic lodge!). One of the nice things about a private reserve is that you aren't restricted to the existing roads. If your guide and tracker spot some interesting activity off in the bush, you can off-road to get a better look. This film was mastered in 4K on RED and has been scaled down to a size that is presentable on the internet. Most of the footage was s...

When the world looked to South Africa for the World Cup in the summer of 2010, the filmmakers of this moving documentary explored the shocking levels of child rape and sexual abuse. In a country where a child is raped every three minutes, and where AIDS continues to spread with epidemic ferocity, we follow four girls aged 11-13 as they struggle to come to terms with the crimes committed against them and fight the social stigma that comes with the abuse. - One in four men in South Africa admit they have raped - A girl born in South Africa has a one in three chance of completing secondary education, and a one in four chance of being raped - Around 200,000 children a year are raped in South Africa - 62% of South African secondary schoolboys believe forcing someone to have sex is not an ac...

South Africa is going into business with China, and since it is my home country, I figured it's time to compare the 2 countries with each other. South Africa is a culturally diverse, up and coming economy, with a lot to offer, but is also dangerous, and many Chinese who are doing business there are starting to see how dangerous it can be. After growing up in South Africa, and living in China for 10 years, I can draw a lot of similarities between the two countries, but also some stark differences. Worlds apart and culturally different, what is life like in these two strikingly unique countries? ⚫ If you want to see China like no one outside of China has ever seen it before: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/conqueringsouthernchina ⚫ CHINA MASS STABBINGS: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_atta...
South Africa's political and economic crisis has taken another twist. President Jacob Zuma has sacked Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan just months after appointing him to the job. Nine other ministers have also been fired in an unprecedented cabinet reshuffle. Zuma's decision is facing strong criticism from both ruling party members and the opposition. They are worried over South Africa's economy just at a time when many believed it was starting to stabilise. But Zuma argues "radical socio-economic transformation" is urgently required to help lift South Africans out of poverty. What is behind Gordhan's sacking? Does it reveal a deep division in the country? Presenter: Sami Zeidan Guests: Bongani Mbindwane - ANC-supporter, businessman and newspaper columnist Lawson Naidoo - executi...

The political system of Apartheid, a form of racial segregation in South Africa, took away the basic rights of the majority black inhabitants. That political system officially came to an end in 1994. The term, "Rainbow Nation" was coined by Archbishop Desmond Tutu to describe post-apartheid South Africa, after South Africa's first democratic election in 1994. With over two decades gone since that historic moment, to what extent does racism and racial segregation still exist in South Africa?

Travel video about destination South-Africa. Johannesburg is the commercial centre of South Africa. Since gold was first discovered there, everything has revolved around money and from the 50th floor of Africa’s tallest building, The Carlton Towers, there is an all-engulfing view of the city’s narrow streets and jungle of concrete and glass. The African Museum is a contemporary building and one of South Africa’s most exquisite landmarks, it contains a large variety of geological exhibits and detailed accounts of the city’s past surface mining that gave rise to the country’s massive gold rush. The resistance to apartheid is also illustrated, as well as the history of Africa’s native inhabitants who journeyed from present day Botswana to the south of the country. In contrast to Johannesburg, ...
Once I was anothers lover
Now I am my own
Trying to call myself a brother
Living here alone
Maybe if you came to see me
Wishing I wasn't so blind
Sitting here thinking to be free
Maybe we'd all change our mind
She is kind and beautiful
I am young and strong
We have never met each other
But it can't be long
Oft' I have slept by her window
Often I whisper her name
And wonder that words in the wind blow
