She is the highest mountain in the world and known to those who live at her base as Chomolungma, “Mother Goddess of the World.” Fifty years ago, in May 1953, New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first human beings to conquer Everest. Ten years later, National Geographic’s Barry Bishop followed and survived, but suffered severe frostbite that later resulted in the loss of his toes.
Now, many decades after these historic first ascents, the sons of these men, all accomplished climbers in their own right – Jamling Tenzing Norgay, Peter Hillary and Brent Bishop – confront the mountain. They join expedition leader Pete Athans, a man who has climbed Everest more than any other Westerner, to attempt a double-route summit.
One group will attempt to climb the extremely difficult West Ridge, first pioneered by the Americans in 1963. A second group will follow the Southeast Ridge, the route pioneered by Hillary and Tenzing. Like the Americans forty years before, the two groups aim to meet on top. Norgay, who climbed Everest in 1996 and vowed never to climb her again, will climb to Base Camp but no further.
The climbing challenges that the team face pushes Surviving Everest into the realm of pure adventure. But there is more to the story than the commemoration of a remarkable series of firsts. Not only does this film tell the untold stories of the first ascents and the individuals who made them, it reveals that in the fifty years since the first successful ascent, dramatic change has swept the mountain, the Khumbu region and the Sherpa people who live there.
The Sherpas hold records for the fastest Everest ascent from the south side (16 hours, 56 minutes) and the most number of summits (a stunning 11 times) and have also paid the dearest price of all. It was May 19, 2012 and a young and determined Canadian was proudly standing on top of the world after an agonizingly slow climb up Mount Everest. Shriya Shah-Klorfine had reached the summit. But in the hours that followed, things would go dreadfully wrong and she would perish, like hundreds before her, high up in Everest's "Death Zone."
Since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's first ascent of Everest almost 60 years ago, it has been an irresistible fascination for aspiring mountaineers. Hundreds make the attempt every year, and many don't make it. This year was no exception as hundreds made their way to the summit even as worrying signs pointed to trouble. Among them was Shriya Shah-Klorfine, the cheerful and energetic Torontonian. She had never climbed a mountain before, and despite warnings from her friends, husband, and seasoned Everest sherpas, she was climbing the world's highest peak, determined to succeed.
In this 2012 documentary, Bob McKeown travels to Nepal and pieces together what happened with exclusive never-before-seen video of Shah-Klorfine's final hours on Everest. the fifth estate uncovers startling information about her deadly climb into the icy oxygen-thin expanse of Everest known as the Death Zone.

National Geographic: French pilot Didier Delsalle touches down on top of the world in a controversial Everest first. Ever since Hillary and Norgay claimed first dibs to the summit of Everest in 1953, others have attempted their own "firsts" on the 29,035-foot (8,850-meter) peak. But on May 14, 2005, test pilot Didier Delsalle, 48, of the French company Eurocopter made Everest and aviation history by landing his unmodified turbo engine AS350 B3 helicopter on the world's tallest mountaintop. His solo flight broke the unofficial record for highest helicopter landing, previously held by Nepalese Lt. Col. Madan Khatri Chhetri, who in 1996 rescued climbers Beck Weathers and Makulu Gau near Camp I at approximately 20,000 feet (6,096 meters). (The record for the highest helicopter flight is 40,820 feet (12,442 meters), set by Jean Boulet in 1972.) Although Nepalese authorities initially gave Delsalle clearance, they later rebuked him for flying without permission. Some climbers also expressed dismay that he topped out without the hard slog, but six-time summiter David Hahn said, "I look at it kind of selfishly. It improves the possibility of rescues in the future." Interview with Delsalle:
Was it hard to control the craft in the thin air and 75 mile (121 kilometer)
an hour winds?
Very. But the landing itself was the hardest part. I didn't know if I was touching down on snow above rock or snow above nothing. If it was snow above nothing and the snow broke, it would have been difficult for me to increase the power and get away.
Were you nervous?
I had some sleepless nights thinking it through. During the approach, I was so focused I had tunnel vision. But I arrived very gently and asked the mountain to accept me. It was like making a new friend.
You actually made two landings. Once wasn't enough?
I did it twice to make sure it's repeatable. To qualify as a landing, you have to touch down for at least two minutes. The first day, I landed for three minutes and 50 seconds. On the second day I was there for four minutes.
Why are Nepalese authorities claiming that you and Eurocopter violated their air space?
There was a big misunderstanding. Nepal gave us a flight permit with no specific limitations. They even wrote "Wish you the best" on our permit. But when we came back, it was a totally different feeling. We really don't know why. It was very disappointing.
Maybe because you broke a Nepalese colonel's record?
Maybe.
Does this flight improve the prospects for future rescue operations?
The thought of rescuing climbers was one of the things that motivated me to do this project. But the forces I encountered were so powerful that to guarantee a safe flight you'd have to design a more powerful copter.
Still, you managed to mount a rescue while you were there.
Yes. I rescued two Japanese climbers at 16,000 feet (4,877 meters). It would have been impossible for the small Nepalese helicopters. But for me, it was no problem.
Any chance of a Café Everest on the summit someday?
Tourism is unthinkable. You'd need safety standards comparable to passenger flights on an airliner. Personally, I'd like to see the Tibet and Nepal governments make rules to ensure that tourist flights never happen.

Mount Everest
Mount Everest, also known in Nepal as Sagarmāthā and in Tibet as Chomolungma, is Earth's highest mountain. It is located in the Mahalangur mountain range in Nepal and Tibet. Its peak is 8,848 metres (29,029 ft) above sea level. It is not the furthest summit from the centre of the Earth. That honour goes to Mount Chimborazo, in the Andes. The international border between China (Tibet Autonomous Region) and Nepal runs across Everest's precise summit point. Its massif includes neighbouring peaks Lhotse, 8,516 m (27,940 ft); Nuptse, 7,855 m (25,771 ft) and Changtse, 7,580 m (24,870 ft).
In 1856, the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India established the first published height of Everest, then known as Peak XV, at 8,840 m (29,002 ft). The current official height of 8,848 m (29,029 ft) as recognised by China and Nepal was established by a 1955 Indian survey and subsequently confirmed by a Chinese survey in 1975. In 1865, Everest was given its official English name by the Royal Geographical Society upon a recommendation by Andrew Waugh, the British Surveyor General of India. Waugh named the mountain after his predecessor in the post, Sir George Everest, arguing that there were many local names, against the opinion of Everest.

She is the highest mountain in the world and known to those who live at her base as Chomolungma, “Mother Goddess of the World.” Fifty years ago, in May 1953, New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first human beings to conquer Everest. Ten years later, National Geographic’s Barry Bishop followed and survived, but suffered severe frostbite that later resulted in the loss of his toes.
Now, many decades after these historic first ascents, the sons of these men, all accomplished climbers in their own right – Jamling Tenzing Norgay, Peter Hillary and Brent Bishop – confront the mountain. They join expedition leader Pete Athans, a man who has climbed Everest more than any other Westerner, to attempt a double-route summit.
One group will attempt to climb the extremely difficult West Ridge, first pioneered by the Americans in 1963. A second group will follow the Southeast Ridge, the route pioneered by Hillary and Tenzing. Like the Americans forty years before, the two groups aim to meet on top. Norgay, who climbed Everest in 1996 and vowed never to climb her again, will climb to Base Camp but no further.
The climbing challenges that the team face pushes Surviving Everest into the realm of pure adventure. But there is more to the story than the commemoration of a remarkable series of firsts. Not only does this film tell the untold stories of the first ascents and the individuals who made them, it reveals that in the fifty years since the first successful ascent, dramatic change has swept the mountain, the Khumbu region and the Sherpa people who live there.
The Sherpas hold records for the fastest Everest ascent from the south side (16 hours, 56 minutes) and the most number of summits (a stunning 11 times) and have also paid the dearest price of all. Of the 175 lives lost on Everest expeditions, 56 have been Sherpas. She is the highest mountain in the world and known to those who live at her base as Chomolungma, “Mother Goddess of the World.” Fifty years ago, in May 1953, New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first human beings to conquer Everest. Ten years later, National Geographic’s Barry Bishop followed and survived, but suffered severe frostbite that later resulted in the loss of his toes.
Now, many decades after these historic first ascents, the sons of these men, all accomplished climbers in their own right – Jamling Tenzing Norgay, Peter Hillary and Brent Bishop – confront the mountain. They join expedition leader Pete Athans, a man who has climbed Everest more than any other Westerner, to attempt a double-route summit.
One group will attempt to climb the extremely difficult West Ridge, first pioneered by the Americans in 1963. A second group will follow the Southeast Ridge, the route pioneered by Hillary and Tenzing. Like the Americans forty years before, the two groups aim to meet on top. Norgay, who climbed Everest in 1996 and vowed never to climb her again, will climb to Base Camp but no further.
The climbing challenges that the team face pushes Surviving Everest into the realm of pure adventure. But there is more to the story than the commemoration of a remarkable series of firsts. Not only does this film tell the untold stories of the first ascents and the individuals who made them, it reveals that in the fifty years since the first successful ascent, dramatic change has swept the mountain, the Khumbu region and the Sherpa people who live there.
The Sherpas hold records for the fastest Everest ascent from the south side (16 hours, 56 minutes) and the most number of summits (a stunning 11 times) and have also paid the dearest price of all. But in the hours that followed, things would go dreadfully wrong and she would perish, like hundreds before her, high up in Everest's "Death Zone."
Since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's first ascent of Everest almost 60 years ago, it has been an irresistible fascination for aspiring mountaineers. National Geographic: French pilot Didier Delsalle touches down on top of the world in a controversial Everest first. Ever since Hillary and Norgay claimed first dibs to the summit of Everest in 1953, others have attempted their own "firsts" on the 29,035-foot (8,850-meter) peak. But on May 14, 2005, test pilot Didier Delsalle, 48, of the French company Eurocopter made Everest and aviation history by landing his unmodified turbo engine AS350 B3 helicopter on the world's tallest mountaintop. His solo flight broke the unofficial record for highest helicopter landing, previously held by Nepalese Lt. Col. Madan Khatri Chhetri, who in 1996 rescued climbers Beck Weathers and Makulu Gau near Camp I at approximately 20,000 feet (6,096 meters). (The record for the highest helicopter flight is 40,820 feet (12,442 meters), set by Jean Boulet in 1972.) Although Nepalese authorities initially gave Delsalle clearance, they later rebuked him for flying without permission. Some climbers also expressed dismay that he topped out without the hard slog, but six-time summiter David Hahn said, "I look at it kind of selfishly. It improves the possibility of rescues in the future." Interview with Delsalle:
Was it hard to control the craft in the thin air and 75 mile (121 kilometer)
an hour winds?
Very. But the landing itself was the hardest part. I didn't know if I was touching down on snow above rock or snow above nothing. If it was snow above nothing and the snow broke, it would have been difficult for me to increase the power and get away.
Were you nervous?
I had some sleepless nights thinking it through. During the approach, I was so focused I had tunnel vision. But I arrived very gently and asked the mountain to accept me. It was like making a new friend.
You actually made two landings. Once wasn't enough?
I did it twice to make sure it's repeatable. To qualify as a landing, you have to touch down for at least two minutes. The first day, I landed for three minutes and 50 seconds. On the second day I was there for four minutes.
Why are Nepalese authorities claiming that you and Eurocopter violated their air space?
There was a big misunderstanding. Nepal gave us a flight permit with no specific limitations. They even wrote "Wish you the best" on our permit. But when we came back, it was a totally different feeling. We really don't know why. It was very disappointing.
Maybe because you broke a Nepalese colonel's record?
Maybe.
Does this flight improve the prospects for future rescue operations?
The thought of rescuing climbers was one of the things that motivated me to do this project. But the forces I encountered were so powerful that to guarantee a safe flight you'd have to design a more powerful copter.
Still, you managed to mount a rescue while you were there.
Yes. I rescued two Japanese climbers at 16,000 feet (4,877 meters). It would have been impossible for the small Nepalese helicopters. But for me, it was no problem.
Any chance of a Café Everest on the summit someday?
Tourism is unthinkable. You'd need safety standards comparable to passenger flights on an airliner. Personally, I'd like to see the Tibet and Nepal governments make rules to ensure that tourist flights never happen.

The highlight is the morning sunrise over the third highest mountain in the world, Mount Kanchenjunga, as well the views of Mount Everest in the far distance.

Jody and Perry are voyagers, backpackers, thrill seekers. They crave adventure and have travelled far and wide across this wondrous planet of ours. Being an avid traveller myself, I know how testing this can be on yourself and the people you travel with. Your true colours appear in these situations, and like a battlefield, it's where friendships are won and lost.
Sitting down in my meeting with Jody and Perry and listening to their stories was affirmation for me that these two had experienced a lot together with travel being their biggest test. The journey they had been on had only strengthened their friendship and nourished their love for one another. They understand each other like no one else and have developed into the perfect team.
On March 18th 2016 another destination was crossed off the map. Maleny on the Sunshine Coast was where they formalised their love. A place that is now a beacon to how far they've come, with a light that will guide them into the distance as they continue their journey as husband and wife.
Basecamp, Mount Everest is a goal they've got their eyes set on towards the end of the year. Getting to know Jody and Perry and having the privilege of capturing their wedding day, gives me belief that whatever challenges they face on this expedition, they'll be there for one other, with strength, commitment, trust and a whole lot of love.
