The Everglades (or Pa-hay-okee) are a natural region of tropical wetlands in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Florida, comprising the southern half of a large watershed. The system begins near Orlando with the Kissimmee River, which discharges into the vast but shallow Lake Okeechobee. Water leaving the lake in the wet season forms a slow-moving river 60 miles (97 km) wide and over 100 miles (160 km) long, flowing southward across a limestone shelf to Florida Bay at the southern end of the state. The Everglades experience a wide range of weather patterns, from frequent flooding in the wet season to drought in the dry season. Writer Marjory Stoneman Douglas popularized the term "River of Grass" to describe the sawgrass marshes, part of a complex system of interdependent ecosystems that include cypress swamps, the estuarine mangrove forests of the Ten Thousand Islands, tropical hardwood hammocks, pine rockland, and the marine environment of Florida Bay.
Human habitation in the southern portion of the Florida peninsula dates to 15,000 years ago. Before European colonization, the region was dominated by the native Calusa and Tequesta tribes. With Spanish colonization, both tribes declined gradually during the following two centuries. The Seminole formed from mostly Creek people who had been warring to the North; they assimilated other peoples and created a new culture. After being forced from northern Florida into the Everglades during the Seminole Wars of the early 19th century, they were able to resist removal by the United States Army. They adapted to the region.
A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of 'wild nature' for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. The first area to use "national park" in its creation legislation was the US's Mackinac Island, in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result, Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.
Everglades National Park is a U.S. National Park in Florida that protects the southern 20 percent of the original Everglades. In the United States, it is the largest tropical wilderness, the largest wilderness of any kind east of the Mississippi River, and is visited on average by one million people each year. It is the third-largest national park in the lower 48 states after Death Valley and Yellowstone. It has been declared an International Biosphere Reserve, a World Heritage Site, and a Wetland of International Importance, one of only three locations in the world to appear on all three lists.
Although most U.S. national parks preserve unique geographic features, Everglades National Park was the first created to protect a fragile ecosystem. The Everglades are a network of wetlands and forests fed by a river flowing .25 miles (0.40 km) per day out of Lake Okeechobee, southwest into Florida Bay. The Park is the most significant breeding ground for tropical wading birds in North America, contains the largest mangrove ecosystem in the western hemisphere, is home to 36 threatened or protected species including the Florida panther, the American crocodile, and the West Indian manatee, and supports 350 species of birds, 300 species of fresh and saltwater fish, 40 species of mammals, and 50 species of reptiles. The majority of South Florida's fresh water, which is stored in the Biscayne Aquifer, is recharged in the park.

Everglades National Park covers nearly one and a half million acres -- the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. It is the anchor to South Florida's ecosystem, and encompasses an incredibly rich mixture of plant and wildlife habitats. This video is an excerpt from Finley-Holiday Films' new "America's National Parks" Blu-ray and DVD. Available on location at national parks throughout the USA and from www.finleyholiday.com. In southern Florida there is a unique world of water, swampland and dense jungle-like forest: the Everglades, a truly magical environment full of mystery, myth and fascinating nature. For many centuries this huge swamp area was inhabited by the Seminole Indians and today the Everglades are one of the greatest natural attractions in the U.S.A. Unlike the somewhat daunting appearance of the alligator the surroundings here are far more benign. The pink flamingo has for many years been associated with Florida and everywhere the croaking of frogs fills the air. There is a huge variety of birdlife as the vast areas of swampland are an ideal habitat and the water is not only rich in fish, various predators can also be found in large numbers. A total of six hundred species of fish live in the wat...

Please SUBSCRIBE NOW! http://bit.ly/BWchannel Coyote Peterson is back in the Florida Everglades and he is about to get up close and personal with one its notorious giant serpents…the only problem is, it doesn’t belong here! The Burmese Python, native to Southeast Asia, is thriving in this habitat but unfortunately is an invasive species that has slowly become a threat to other local wildlife and the overall stability of the ecosystem. It is believed a large number of these snakes have been introduced to the area by prior pet owners in an effort to rid themselves of a snake that has grown too large for their care. So in this episode not only will Coyote show you all of the cool features this enormous python has to offer but will also put into perspective just how large these snakes can b...
day 2 in Florida, again blowing 25+ at the shore so I stuck to the canals but instead of fishing the downtown canals I drove west, away from Miami, and fished in the Everglades. It is the Taimiami Trail that runs along route 41 from pretty much the gulf coast to the atlantic coast. Caught a Pleco, numerous Bowfin and some Oscars all while sharing the bank with some locals and some Gators. This footage is mostly from the morning of Feb 20, I spent the afternoon uploading these video off my gopro to make room for the rest of the journey, blew a fuse, fixed fuse, and resumed fishing just before dusk. The fishing wasn't spectacular, did catch some new species and got the bowfin all riled up for about an hour, good times exploring the everglades! If you're ever doing some exploratory fishing ...

In 1963 Aerojet-General built a rocket manufacturing plant in the middle of the Everglades. They were hoping to build rockets for the Apollo moon mission. The rockets were built and tested in a 150 ft. deep silo, the deepest hole ever dug in Florida. In addition to the site, they dug the largest canal cutting through the Everglades to the Atlantic ocean. Because the rockets were so big (solid fueled), they could only be transfered by barge. The Saturn rockets ended up with liquid fuel and Aerojet never got the contract. The site was abandoned in 1969, along with the rocket in the silo. It's been sitting there for nearly 50 years. Travel video about destination Everglades in The USA. The Everglades are a vast expanse of freshwater swamps that cover southern Florida and are located fifty kilometres from Miami. Throughout the year the majority of the six thousand square kilometre national park is covered with the slow flowing water of the Okeechobee River and for thousands of years this unique grassy landscape has been the habitat of numerous fascinating creatures. The alligator is at the top of the Everglades’ food chain. Apart from the water of Lake Okeechobee heavy rainstorms also contribute to the extensive swampland that is predominantly covered with saw grass. More than three hundred and fifty species of bird live in the Everglades among them such majestic specimens as the Everglades Kite that constantly glides o...

Florida is called the „Sunshine State”. Visitors mainly come here to enjoy the sunshine, the sea, the never ending sandy shore of the peninsula and the unique atmosphere of Miami. But of course it is worth to spent time on the landscape-protection areas such as the Everglades National Park and its fen, where they can slalom in between the alligators on hovercrafts. The following sights are also significant: Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral, the House of Hemingway in Key West, the House of Edison in Fort Myers, the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg and the oldest American fortress – Castillo de San Marcos - in St. Augustine.Orlando is equally the paradise of pleasant relaxation for kids and adults. Travel video about nature park Everglades in the USA. The Everglades Nature Park is located in the far South East of Florida and covers an area of around 3,500 square kilometres. Beyond the protection of the park, the neighbouring swamps are a major fascination of this region. The textures of the landscape are both rugged and soft and its infinite waterways and riverbanks conjure up a strong sense of adventure. There are alligators, racoons, pelicans, heron, ibis, and two hundred and seventy-five species of fish including the manatis - a docile sea cow that weighs well over a ton - as well as more than four hundred species of bird. There’s a replica of an original Miccosukee Indian village that has been transformed into an historical museum and the tiny settlement also contains a variety of...

Harlan Howard
He was born and raised around Jacksonville. A nice young man, not the kind to kill.
But a jealous fight and a flashing blade sent him on the run to the Everglades. Runnin' like a dog through the Everglades.
Now, the posse went in and they came back out. They said he'll die and there ain't no doubt.
It's an eye for an eye so the debt is paid. He won't last long in the Everglades. A man can't live in the Everglades.
Chorus:
Where a man can hide and never be found and have no fear of the bayin' hounds.
But he better keep movin' and don't stand still. If the 'skeeters don't get then the 'gaters will. Runnin' like a dog through the Everglades. (Last time - Skippin' like a frog through the slimy bog. Runnin' through the trees from the Everlys.)
Now, the years went by and his girl was wed. His fam'ly gave him up for dead.
But now and then the natives would say they'd seen him runnin' through the Everglades.
Now, he never heard the news on the radio. He was deep in the 'glades so he'll never know.
His runnin' and hidin' didn't make much sense for the jury had ruled it was self-defense.
Running like a dog through the Everglades.
