Tokyo (東京, Tōkyō, "Eastern Capital") (Japanese: [toːkjoː], English /ˈtoʊki.oʊ/), officially Tokyo Metropolis (東京都, Tōkyō-to), is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan, and is both the capital and largest city of Japan. The Greater Tokyo Area is the most populous metropolitan area in the world. It is the seat of the Emperor of Japan and the Japanese government. Tokyo is in the Kantō region on the southeastern side of the main island Honshu and includes the Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands. Formerly known as Edo, it has been the de facto seat of government since 1603 when Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu made the city his headquarters. It officially became the capital after Emperor Meiji moved his seat to the city from the old capital of Kyoto in 1868; at that time Edo was renamed Tokyo. Tokyo Metropolis was formed in 1943 from the merger of the former Tokyo Prefecture (東京府, Tōkyō-fu) and the city of Tokyo (東京市, Tōkyō-shi).
Tourism in Tokyo is a major industry. In 2006, 4.81 million foreigners and 420 million Japanese visits to Tokyo were made; the economic value of these visits totaled 9.4 trillion yen according to the government of Tokyo. Many tourists visit the various downtowns, stores, and entertainment districts throughout the neighborhoods of the special wards of Tokyo; particularly school children on class trips, a visit to Tokyo Tower is de rigueur.
Cultural offerings include both omnipresent Japanese pop culture and associated districts such as Shibuya and Harajuku, subcultural attractions such as Studio Ghibli anime center, as well as museums like the Tokyo National Museum, which houses 37% of the country's artwork national treasures (87/233). No buildings in Tokyo are World heritage sites and only the Jizo Hall of Shofuku-ji, a suburban temple, is a National treasure. Other popular attractions include the Imperial Palace, Meiji Shrine, and Sensō-ji, a popular temple. Finally, many tourists, particularly foreign tourists, visit Tsukiji Fish Market, as the time-zone difference leads to foreign visitors waking up very early local time.
The transport network in Greater Tokyo includes public and private rail and highway networks; airports for international, domestic, and general aviation; buses; motorcycle delivery services, walking, bicycling, and commercial shipping. While the nexus is in the central part of Tokyo, every part of the Greater Tokyo Area has rail or road transport services. The sea and air transport is available from limited number of ports for the general public.

Keywords: rural-settingDid you know that Tokyo has islands? Yes, the prefecture (province/state) of Tokyo has a volcanic chain of islands called the Izu Seven Islands group. We stayed at Shikinejima (Shikine-jima), which is a small island 3 km long by 2.5 km wide that is located 160 km south of the city of Tokyo. To get there, we took an overnight ferry, where we slept on a carpeted floor. Footage has emerged of a new island being formed in a volcanic chain some 1000km south of Tokyo. The 200 metre wide spit of land will probably not survive for long, as most volcanic islands are either destroyed during their creation or sink below the waves shortly after. If it survives, it will be the first new island in the area since 1974. In December 2008, the low-lying Carterets Islands were badly damaged by king tides and violent storm surges. Nicholas Hakata, a local youth leader and community representative, explains that he and his family have been surviving on mainly fish and coconuts, and battling the swamp mosquitoes that have brought malaria. With the local government's food aid ship coming once or twice a year, the relocation plans are equally as slow. Hungry and unwell, the islanders have set up a relocation team and have begun a series of urgent tasks to move families closer to security. Just arrived in Tokyo, having this mad craving for some "okonomiyaki"; so I called up my Taiwanese/American mate from highschool who just landed a job in Japan to come along. Now okonomiyaki is a "western Japan food" (Tokyo is east), but the dish is widely popular. However what we were looking for was a bit different. We were looking for some "Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki" which is a multi-layered pancake which is hard to make and not easy to find in Tokyo. So I went to Shibuya to meet up with my friend, and... woah what the hell is going on!? Why is everyone holding a flag!? Japanese 4th of July!? ...well no, apparently there was a huge anti-China rally going on that day. The main issue is the territorial dispute on who owns the Senkaku Islands. (I have no comments on this - All I can ...

Ian Wright goes on an unusual journey to the Southern Islands of Japan – from Kyushu down to the Yaeyama Islands, Japan’s westernmost point, only 110 km from Taiwan. Using a combination of flights and ferries, Ian island hops through the Pacific Islands and proves that even Japan can be done on a budget. He begins his trip in Tokyo, with its congested sprawl of high rises, narrow alleys ablaze with neon lights and surging crowds of office workers. Ian takes refuge in one of Japan’s many hostess bars, where European girls are paid large amounts of money just to sit and make polite conversation with Japanese businessmen. No trip to Tokyo is complete without experiencing the Japanese youth scene at Yoyigikoen Park. Bands ranging from hip hop to heavy metal compete to create a cacophony of no...
In November 2011 the Spatial Dialogues team conducted fieldwork at a number of sites in and around Tokyo including the Saitama River, Tokyo Bay and the underground water storage tanks in Saitama. All the sites are part of the social, economic and environmental uses and roles of water in Tokyo. The team collaborated with Christophe Charles and students from Musashino Arts University, Tokyo. Sumida River, Tokyo Tokyo has four major river systems: Tama gawa, Turumi gawa, Arakawa and Tone. Generally they collect water from the mountains in the West and drain into Tokyo bay. Flooding of these river systems was particularly common in the 1950s due to rapid urban postwar expansion. From the 1980s a program was designed to prevent the flooding of Tokyo through the design of underground river an...
The World Before Me is a modern-day round the world trip, set to the words of a 19th century poet. “Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road, healthy, free, the world before me.” 160 years have passed since Walt Whitman penned this text, but feelings about travel remain the same. We’re still inspired by the open road and still excited by discovering the unknown. In the fall of 2015, while preparing for a trip that would take me literally around the world, I couldn't shake the desire to share the experience of travel, which for me is a very personal one. This film is the culmination of that desire. I carried my camera for 5 months through 15 countries. The endless metropolis of Tokyo, tiny islands of The Philippines, busy streets of India, the Swiss Alps and the Scottish Highland...

Welcome to Tokyo, the capital of Japan and the epitome of the word “megacity.” In this vast metropolis, ancient traditions blend with futuristic buildings, and your Tokyo sightseeing will take you to representations of each. Pay your respects at temples set in forested hillsides, then flex your credit card in one of the shopping districts, before sitting down to a five-star meal…all in one day. Your Tokyo tour begins with the subway and train system, which will take you all over this sprawling city. Tokyo is home to some 35 million people, many of which you’ll meet as its public transit carries you throughout its many neighborhoods. Make a stop in Asakusa, a temple district nestled in leafy trees with skyscrapers towering in the background. There you’ll visit Nakamisi Dori, a street load...

Take my hand
Rob me for a while of my sight
Don't let me stand
Here underneath the red light
Oh touch my face
Feel the fascination as love grows
Your embrace
Eases the pain that only Tokyo knows
Where were you when I was cold
And all the world was out to get me
(Chorus)
Tokyo
Why can't I ever say no
Tokyo
Sense the chill
Of silent nights on my skin
Feel the thrill
As these four walls just cave in
Taste the rain
Splashes down on my roof
Seek in vain
For you will never know the real truth
This human heart beats much too fast
For comfort or for love in Tokyo
(Repeat Chorus)
